2015 marks a new era for AvtoVAZ: a completely new line of cars will appear in the model range of the Togliatti-based company, made in the latest corporate X-style. The external characteristic feature of such new products will be the reproduction of the Latin letter X in the front part of the body and the corresponding stamping on the sides.

The so-called high Lada Xray hatchback will technically be based on the French Renault Sandero Stepway and will have similar dimensions, but will also have a more spacious trunk, comparable in volume to the Lada Kalina station wagon. The exterior of the car will be made in the image of the latest version of the Lada Xray 2 concept.

But the most interesting thing for the Russian consumer will probably not be the appearance of the X-Ray, but its performance qualities. Unlike the donor Stepway, VAZ's new product will receive an all-wheel drive modification, which may even be positioned as an independent model - Lada Xray Cross. The transmission for this “Cross” will be borrowed from the all-wheel drive version of the Renault Duster crossover, but in terms of cross-country ability, the car will apparently outperform the most popular “French” in Russia due to its more compact dimensions and shorter overhangs. Compared to the standard X-ray, the Lada Xray Cross will receive an additional plastic body kit, as well as a different line of power units. Let us remind you that so far three engines have been confirmed for the regular Lada Hray: a VAZ 1.6-liter engine with a capacity of 106 hp, a 114-horsepower engine from Renault of the same volume and the latest 1.8-liter 123-horsepower VAZ unit. 21128, which was previously installed only on a special modification of the Lada Priora 1.8 from AvtoVAZ’s partner in Tolyatti.

The price of the first full-fledged VAZ crossover will be determined taking into account the difference in exchange rates between foreign and domestic currencies, but, based on early statements by AvtoVAZ President Bo Andersson, the serial Lada X-ray Cross 4×4 2021/2021 model year at the time it comes out will cost cheaper than the aforementioned all-wheel drive Duster.

The platform based on B0 is the same as in Nissan and Renault models, while the new crossover uses a powerful subframe and an upgraded suspension, which gives the car increased cross-country ability, stability and controllability.

Reviews from the owners of this car indicate that the Cross's handling and cross-country ability are indeed at a fairly high level.

The electric power steering works quite well, and handling is quite good. And the Luxe package even has a heated steering wheel.

Among the shortcomings - reviews of X-Ray Cross indicate insufficient noise insulation at speeds of 120-140 km/h and above. But if you follow the speed limit according to the traffic rules, everything is within normal limits.

On the other hand, some drivers, especially men, prefer larger dimensions of the car to give, as it seems to them, more solidity. But this is not an acquired taste: for some it may be a plus, for others it may be a minus.

Their fuel consumption is approximately the same.

Well, one of the main advantages of the Lada XRAY Cross is the increased ground clearance of 215 mm. The Duster in a similar front-wheel drive version has 205 mm, and in all-wheel drive it has 210 mm.

Why not all-wheel drive?

Probably, as the first domestic full-fledged crossover, AVTOVAZ engineers decided to produce a worthy analogue of the simplest version of the Duster, which they completely succeeded in doing. Let's hope this is just the beginning, and all-wheel drive variants will follow in the near future.

In this regard, we consider it incorrect to compare the X-Ray Cross with the all-wheel drive Renault Duster. Those who do this forget about the cost of a 4x4 drive - and even in the simplest versions it ranges from 1 million - 1.3 million rubles to 2.5-3.5 million rubles in more expensive brands.

Whatever one may say, despite domestic production and assembly, all components are produced using European technologies and in partnership with global brands Renault-Nissan. Therefore, the cost of a car is measured pegged to the dollar and euro - these are the realities of today.

We think that if all-wheel drive for the Lada XRAY Cross is ever implemented, then at the current dollar exchange rate, in 2018-2019, the price will be about 1-1.1 million rubles, no less.

You can also disable the electronic stabilization system by selecting ESC off, however, at speeds only up to 54 km/h, then it is automatically turned on for safety reasons.

According to reviews from X-Ray Cross owners, the most optimal, however, is the normal road mode ESC on. Although, perhaps, not everyone knows how to properly use such electronics.

True, installation of such a system is possible in a configuration no lower than Comfort - and this starts from 810 thousand rubles.

Inside, the Cross has become as much as 2.5 cm more spacious for rear seat passengers. The interior itself remains the same as in the previous model, but the ergonomics of the space have become more comfortable.

The rear seat has also been moved down by 4 cm, which adds height to the space.

The seats now have lateral support, which makes the seating of both the driver and passengers more comfortable, especially when traveling long distances.

A large container under the passenger seat in a more expensive configuration adds comfort, plus there are convenient additional compartments: a large glove compartment, a place for a phone, etc.

The downside is that there is no steering column joystick for switching tracks when listening to music.

Also, according to reviews from owners and test drive participants, there are some shortcomings in the interior of the cabin, although they are not critical, they can cause minor inconveniences: for example, the buttons for turning on heated seats or the locks for fastening seat belts are not located in the most convenient way.

The trunk, although it does not have a large volume in its standard form (310-360 liters according to various measurements), can be significantly increased by folding the seats, both front and rear - up to 1500 liters.

The standard modification is a sedan. This model has the following body dimensions:

  • Vesta's length has grown to 4410 mm, which is akin to a record for a small class;
  • the width also makes competitors tremble convulsively, because its value is 1764 mm;

Smoothly and slowly

Everything in the cabin is familiar and in place. Only between the seats is the variator lever raised. The modes are standard - P, R, N, D. There is also a manual mode where you can select one of seven virtual gears. There is no sports mode. Well, no need, I’ll go this way.

I start the engine, move the lever to Drive and press the gas. XRAY Cross moves off smoothly. At the very beginning of the movement, reactions to pressing the gas pedal are nonlinear - the revolutions increase more than the speed. Further is better. But all the same, we are not talking about any sharpness. The variator does everything deliberately slowly. The main problem of CVTs, when the motor reaches the zone of maximum torque and hangs there, and the car picks up speed by changing the gear ratio of the pulleys, has been dealt with here. But in certain modes, the CVT essence manifests itself - the revolutions drop, but the speed increases.

Jatco also doesn’t like situations where the driver first accelerates, then brakes sharply and presses the gas pedal to the floor again. After pressing the gas, there is a painful pause, followed by a pickup. But after a day of driving, you begin to understand the variator and the logic of its operation.

On the highway the situation is twofold. On the one hand, CVT provides fuel economy and quietness in the cabin. At a speed of 110 km/h the engine runs at 2200 rpm. And consumption is around six liters per hundred. At 90 km/h you can drive with a consumption of 5.5 liters. This is amazing. But overtaking is more difficult. But here it’s not only about the variator, but also about engine power. Still 113 liters. With. — this is the required minimum for a crossover on 17-inch wheels.

In seconds and liters

The Jatco variator here is not quite ordinary - a V-belt transmission is coupled to a two-speed automatic transmission. The increasing stage allows you to save fuel at low speeds, the decreasing stage should provide dynamic acceleration. In addition, the design of the variator prevents the belt from being at the very edge or axis of the cone, where it can slip. This should improve the durability of the unit.

You expect emotional acceleration from a bright orange car, but the acceleration is not impressive. The engine's voice cannot be called sporty, and therefore it is muffled quite correctly. The Xray Cross accelerates from zero to “hundreds” in 12.3 seconds, the same amount required for a regular Xray with a 1.8 engine (122 hp) and a “robot”. The difference is in the quality of acceleration; a car with a CVT accelerates as smoothly as possible. It seems that AvtoVAZ engineers were tired of the reproaches of those dissatisfied with the twitchy “robot”, and they elevated smoothness to an absolute.

What to expect from a sports flagship from Togliatti

The numb throttle pedal needs to be pressed slowly and smoothly to achieve a linear response. As soon as you let it go, the engine speed drops rapidly - this car is not set up to race, but to save fuel.

However, the CVT is still inferior to the “robot” in consumption; the regular Xray, even with a more powerful 122-horsepower engine, is more economical: 6.8 versus 7.1 liters on average. Judging by the stated figures, the continuously variable transmission is a little thirstier in the city and a little more economical on the highway. The on-board computer of our car showed a consumption of 9.1 liters, which is quite consistent with city figures.

What engine does the automatic transmission come with on X-Ray?

This is a power unit of a brand such as the HR-16, produced at AvtoVAZ’s own plant, with 1.6 liters of volume and well tested on both Sandero and Renault Logan, as well as on Duster and Captur. This engine has 16 valves, a chain-type timing belt, has an aluminum block and has proven itself quite reliably in mass versions of both Renault and Nissan.

However, as often happens with us, an opportunity arose, and in mid-July 2019 it was announced that the AMT on X-Ray is not a CVT at all.

Moreover, the Jatco variator paired with a 113-horsepower 1.6 engine has become a universal option for automating the model range of the Renautl-Nissan and AvtoVAZ alliance. The instrument panel is interestingly implemented; it is grouped into three wells, all of which resembles a sports car. The quality of the panel material is good. The panel has few lamps, but despite this it looks informative. The torpedo is made of dark plastic. The center console is level with the panel, but protrudes forward a little and this is convenient for use; you don’t need to reach out to press a certain button. The console is divided into two parts, but depending on the configuration, it is located on top (in the expensive configuration there is a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen), and a branded radio in the cheaper basic version. On the second part of the panel there is a climate system separated by a row of buttons. The central tunnel is equipped with two cup holders.

The car has good visibility; the arches do not interfere with the view, as on the previous model 2170. Two airbags are built into the front panel (driver plus passenger). Regarding the interior trim, it looks high quality. The door cards, by the way, use new Soft Look plastic, are visually similar to leather. The plastic is embossed and hard to the touch. Despite the cheap materials, the interior looks quite strict and not childish, and if the car is in the Luxury configuration, the interior is equipped with additional chrome inserts. In general, Vesta’s interior looks a class higher than it is: ergonomic seats with good upholstery, all instruments and elements are arranged thoughtfully. When you get into the car, it’s pleasant to be in, you can see the road, and it’s easy to read the information on the speedometer. The seats have a high depth of adjustment, which allows tall people to feel comfortable behind the wheel. In previous models, there was limited space in the back, which was a big minus. There is ample knee room behind the driver; the distance from the rear sofa to the front seats is 226 mm. In general, it feels like the dimensions inside the car have been thought out. The seats are comfortable, the headrest follows the lines of the body and is friendly with the back of the head when standing in a traffic jam. The distance from the floor to the rear sofa is 345 mm, and from the floor to the top of the front seats is in the range from 276 to 310 mm. The distance from the floor to the steering wheel (since it is adjustable) is from 450 - 528 mm.

Its device is identical to the previous one. According to the engineers, the engine should have a power of 116 hp. s., however, it was reduced for some reasons. Thanks to innovations, this engine has good traction and is more economical. Top speed has also increased to 181 km/h.

The 122 hp engine is still the most popular. With. and volume 1.8 l. It was developed by AvtoVAZ engineers. At the moment it is installed only in X-Ray. Thanks to a torque of 170 Nm, the engine accelerates the car to 100 km/h in just 10.9 s. The top speed has also increased compared to other variants and is 186 km/h. Fuel consumption has not increased here. This was achieved thanks to the innovations of engineers. The engine could accelerate the car even faster, but due to the fact that the robotic gearbox does not work perfectly, this is impossible. If this engine were installed with mechanics, then realizing the full power of the unit would be much easier.

If a powerful engine is important, then at the moment it is better to give preference to the Lada X-Ray car. Its engine range includes a powerful 122-horsepower engine, which is not available for Vesta. However, the company plans to fix this soon and begin installing the engine in the sedan. In this case, Vesta should become faster than X-Ray. Implementing this engine in a sedan is not the easiest task, so it is being postponed.

But it also behaves decently on the highway, we drove it to the Black Sea coast, 3,000 km there back - comfortable and economical, although there was not much space, 4 people drove, everyone fit in and did not complain), along the highway at 120-130 km / h and the climate control is turned on, the car behaves adequately and does not stall. Very obedient car!

The 2021 Lada Xray Cross is equipped with a 122-horsepower 1.8-liter gasoline engine, which can be paired with a five-speed manual transmission or a single-clutch automatic transmission (AMT). The new SUV has only front-wheel drive. The Xray is built on the B0 platform; the front suspension of the cross version has been modified: the Logan lower arms have been replaced with L-shaped ones, like the Vesta suspension. Also from its neighbor in the model range, the new product received rear disc brakes. In addition, the Xray Cross does not have an electro-hydraulic power steering, but an electric one; the number of revolutions from lock to lock has been reduced from 3.3 to 2.9.

The cross-version differs from the standard five-door in its ground clearance: its ground clearance is 215 mm, while that of the regular Xray is 195 mm. The new product turned out to be the widest in the Lada line - 1,810 mm versus 1,785 mm on Vesta Cross.

In general, the new body of the Lada X Ray Cross 2021 is not much different from the usual configuration of the car. In the photo you can see that the car has become a little taller, acquired protective elements made of plastic and metal, and also received more aggressive body kits at the front and rear.

The face of the car is also very small in size, but due to the fact that it is set high, it still seems massive. At the very top of the front end you can find a slightly sloped bonnet, the sides of which are slightly recessed. Directly below these recesses there is a massive head optics, which can be filled with high-quality halogen lights and even xenon. All the fun is in the center of the bumper.

The lower part of the bumper also includes features such as additional air intakes located on the sides, through which cooled air enters the braking system. Round fog lights can also be found here. At the end of the body kit there is also plastic protection for the body and engine compartment.

On the sides, XRAY Cross also underwent very minor changes. As before, the decorations here are a wavy relief, small windows with a glossy perimeter frame, stylish semi-plastic mirrors with turn signal repeaters and enlarged wheel arches. An innovation is a wide plastic insert at the very bottom of the body, which prevents sand, branches and stones from damaging it when driving on a bad road.

The rear of the car has changed the most. The roof now ends in a wider visor, on which there are brake lights united in one line. A little lower is the tailgate with a small window and stylish side lights. The body kit here is made entirely of plastic and includes fog lights, a metal diffuser, as well as an exhaust pipe, a towbar mount and a towing eye.

As expected, the car is practically no different inside from the basic version of the car.
