Why Lada Priora crashes when cold and what to do

The latest Lada model

Despite the streams of criticism, the Priora is perhaps the most successful VAZ car in recent years. It is quite dynamic and comfortable, but from time to time it presents its owners with small problems. The most common problem is that the engine idles when cold and then overheats. That is, when you start the car in the morning, it starts to work intermittently, and uniform dull sounds are heard from the exhaust pipe.

Another factor is the strong smell of unburnt gasoline from the muffler. Engine vibrations increase, which the airbag may not be able to cope with, so they are transmitted to the body and cause discomfort. The reason for all this is that one of the cylinders is either firing unevenly or not firing at all.

Signs of engine tripping

If the Priora’s engine starts to stall, it’s hard not to notice; the car will show the following signs of a malfunction:

  • Loss of vehicle traction;
  • Gases will come out of the exhaust pipe unevenly, and small pops will be heard;
  • On the dashboard, the “CheckEngine” lamp will initially flash, and then remain on. The engine control unit will record an error about misfire in a certain cylinder.
  • The engine will take longer to start or you will need to press the gas pedal to start the engine;

If your car shows such signs of malfunction, then most likely one of the cylinders in the car is not working.

Causes

The LADA PRIORA engine has problems with the 16 valve injector for various reasons. To find out the specifics, the motorist needs to know the design features of the power unit, as well as have some vehicle repair skills.

Lada Priora 16 valves.

So, LADA PRIORA has 16 valves and a triple engine, what could be the reasons for the effect:

  • Poor quality fuel.
  • Malfunction in fuel supply elements.
  • Malfunction of air intake units.
  • Malfunction in the ignition system.
  • The problem lies in the electronic part of the car.

Why does the engine troit?

Engine trouble occurs for several reasons, and sometimes these reasons together can cause the failure of any of the cylinders.

Causes:

  • Injectors;
  • Spark plug;
  • Ignition coils;
  • Hydraulic compensators;
  • valves;
  • Compression;

All of the above details are ways to influence engine tripping. Let's look at each of the reasons in more detail.

Spark plug

Most often, the engine may stall due to worn spark plugs. Since spark plugs are installed in the combustion chamber and are exposed to high temperatures, they often fail, which leads to misfire in the cylinder in which the spark plug failed.

If your car has misfires, the first thing you need to do is check the spark plugs, and it is best to replace them with new ones.

Ignition coil

To provide the engine with a spark, Priora uses individual ignition coils for each cylinder, that is, the ignition coil is installed directly on the spark plug.

Since the ignition coil is made of plastic, exposed to high temperatures over time, its insulation cracks, which leads to breakdown of the insulation and leakage of the spark to the engine body. Also, at high temperatures, the coil winding can melt and short-circuit, which leads to coil failure and, consequently, misfire.

Injectors

Fuel injectors, as well as spark plugs, are installed near the combustion chamber and supply fuel through valves into the chamber. When the injector becomes dirty, the fuel supply to the combustion chamber is not supplied in the required volume or is not supplied at all, this leads to misfire.

Hydraulic compensators

In the Priora, namely the 16-valve engine, instead of shims on the valves, there are hydraulic compensators that adjust the gap between the camshaft and the valve automatically using oil pressure. With high mileage, cars have problems with the operation of this part; the hydraulic valves begin to knock and soon cannot open the valve at all, which leads to misfires in this cylinder.

valves

Sometimes it happens that the valves are to blame for engine throttling, namely, when a valve burns out, a small dimple appears in it, which allows compressed gases to pass through, which does not allow the mixture to ignite normally. For this reason, misfires may occur in the Priora engine.

Compression

With high mileage, the car engine wears out and thereby loses its compression. As in the case of valves, the gases are not compressed enough, thereby not forming a good fuel mixture.

Checking the spark plugs

According to experts, the main reason that leads to the engine starting to stall is spark plugs that have become unusable. Therefore, these elements need to be checked first, because quite often a simple replacement of spark plugs helps to completely eliminate the analyzed defect. To check the serviceability of the spark plugs, you need to do the following:

  • remove the terminal from the car battery;
  • disconnect and remove the high-voltage wires from the spark plugs;
  • Using a car wrench of the appropriate size, remove the spark plugs from the cylinders, strictly adhering to the order;
  • Each removed spark plug must be carefully inspected. If a malfunction or any other defect is discovered during inspection, the element must be replaced with a new one without fail.

If a new spark plug is installed in place of the old spark plug, be sure to adjust the element gap and check the spark plug for resistance. After all the components are installed in their original place, taking into account the sequence, it is recommended to start the Priora engine to understand whether replacing the spark plugs solved the problem. If the defect cannot be removed, you should check the integrity of the high-voltage wires.

Troubles when pressing the gas pedal sharply

When the Priora engine stalls when the throttle is opened sharply, this indicates a breakdown of the insulation of the individual ignition coils. The IKZ has rubber seals that isolate the cap of the coil and spark plugs, thereby preserving the spark from breakdown; when this cap wears out or is damaged, the spark can go to the engine body, thus, when the gas pedal is pressed sharply, it will pierce the body, which is why the internal combustion engine will triple.

Sensors

Engine friction can be caused by 2 sensors. One of them is the idle speed sensor. If he makes a mistake, the engine will stall when cold. After warming up everything returns to normal. The problem may also be caused by the crankshaft position sensor. Usually the problem with it is visible during diagnosis.

Conclusion

. There are many engine-related malfunctions. At the same time, even seemingly harmless ones can cause a bunch of other problems. Therefore, it is important to know all the reasons why the Priora 16-valve engine triples. This will help you quickly eliminate the problem, which significantly reduces engine life. It also brings closer the need for major repairs.

Many owners of Lada PRIORA were faced with the fact that their sixteen-valve engine began to trip. The reasons for this effect are typical for all injection-type engines. The malfunction should be looked for in three places: the air or fuel supply, as well as the spark formation unit. But it also happens that electronics affect the operation of the engine.

System malfunctions

If it was not possible to detect a malfunction in the electronic part, then it is necessary to move on to analyzing the mechanics. Thus, the occurrence of the tripling effect is influenced by one of three systems - air, fuel and spark. Typically, engine tripping is caused by a lack of spark, but other systems can also affect the course of events. Therefore, it is worth checking each system separately.

Sparking

In this case, we are talking about failure of spark plugs or high-voltage wires. Checking these elements is quite simple. First you need to remove the wires from the car. To do this, you need to pull out the tip of the wire from the spark plug, and the second from the ignition coil. Then, using a spark plug wrench, unscrew the spark plugs from the block head.

Diagnosis of spark plugs is quite simple. First, you should inspect the part for cracks or damage. Clean the contacts with a cloth if they are dirty and install the spark plug back.

The high-voltage wire is checked using a resistance tester. First, each product is checked for insulation breakdown.

Fuel supply

Three parts play a role in the quality process of fuel supply: pump, filter and nozzles. To begin with, it is worth diagnosing the latter. To do this, they are dismantled from the car and installed in a special stand, which will show how suitable the parts are for further use. After this, it is worth carrying out the cleaning procedure.

The next thing to check is the fuel pump. It is located in the fuel tank, and can only be reached from the passenger compartment by first removing the rear sofa. After this, the power and fuel lines are turned off. Then, you need to take the fuel pump out and inspect the filter mesh. If it is dirty and clogged, then it should be replaced.

In the case of the fuel filter element, everything is simple - change it. This part is not dismountable and it is not possible to accurately determine its condition.

Air supply

Another system without which ignition of the air-fuel mixture is impossible. To begin with, it is worth dismantling the air filter element (air filter) and inspecting its condition. If it is too dirty, it should be replaced.

In addition to the air filter, it is worth inspecting the condition of the throttle valve. An element that is too dirty may jam and prevent air from passing normally into the combustion chamber. So, to clean it, you should first dismantle it and then clean it with carburetor cleaning fluid.

Also, after removing the throttle, it is recommended to clean the air corrugation, which supplies air to the damper and the mass air flow sensor. The air flow sensor is equipped with an indicator mesh, which allows air to pass through and regulates the amount required for combustion.

A clogged element may result in incorrect readings. The damper, in turn, will not close to the desired position, which will lead to excess air in the combustion chamber.

Technical reasons why the internal combustion engine is tripping

  • When accelerating. This is a dangerous situation that needs to be corrected urgently, because there is a real threat to life, for example, when overtaking with oncoming traffic. In this case, the resource of the machine may not allow the maneuver to be completed to the end, because the power and overall compression ratio are reduced. In addition, a number of other troubles can occur: the operating temperature of the engine rises above normal, the cooling system fails, the engine becomes unusable, etc. There can be many reasons, but they definitely need to be clarified at a car service center; continuing to drive a car when the engine is shaking is very dangerous. The price is life.
  • The engine stalls due to a failure of the power supply or cooling system.

Replacing the cooling system thermostat

Here you should check the service life and condition of the pipe, air filter, and injector. The characteristics of the malfunction are confirmed by a number of external signs: traces of fuel drips, cracks, broken pieces, etc. Most problems of this kind can be corrected with your own hands, the price of the parts is low, and replacement on your own will not require additional costs. In addition, all the necessary spare parts can be purchased on the Parbox.ru website. including for Largus and Niva models. In some cases, engine malfunction may be due to low-quality fuel. Then you just need to change it and the engine life will increase significantly.

The engine also stalls due to a faulty ignition system. You can check this immediately by unscrewing the spark plugs. If after running the engine for a few seconds, then turn it off and check the spark plugs, one should be wet.

Diagnostics of internal combustion engines by plaque color

The color of the coating on the candles says a lot. If it is white or black, in any case, electronics repair and replacement of a number of elements may be required. Normally, the coating on candles is brick and reddish-brown. Sometimes the coils also overheat; replacing them can also solve the problem. There is an opinion that tuning the Priora engine can help in this case. Sometimes this actually eliminates technical problems in the engine, but you shouldn’t count on it entirely. It should also be noted that the cooling system, ignition and electronics of the Priora are a weak point. Sometimes even detecting a defect takes a long time. Alternate replacement of parts helps, but the price in this case is quite high.

The motor fails due to the failure of one of its elements. The reason may be hidden in the gas distribution mechanism, one of the sensors, an increase in operating temperature, oil supply problems, etc.

What to do when the Lada Priora engine troits

Do-it-yourself Lada Priora engine repair depends on the cause of the malfunction:

  1. If combustion of the windings of the injector elements is to blame, remove the cover and then pull out the manifold. Assess the condition of the windings and measure the resistance using a multimeter. The optimal resistance level is from 11 to 15 Ohms. If the value is lower, the winding must be replaced.
  2. If the resistance shows normal values, remove the fuel rail and rinse each part thoroughly with water. But you should not tackle a defect in this category if you do not have the skills to repair it - be extremely careful. For flushing to be successful, open the valves leading to the nozzle, and then apply the flushing agent under pressure in the form of an aerosol.
  3. If you doubt the quality of the fuel, completely drain the old fuel and fill the engine with 8 or 16 valves with 95-grade gasoline. A high octane number does not make sense; on the contrary, this option may lead to overheating of the engine. If replacing gasoline does not help, then change the air and fuel filter units.
  4. How to check if a spark plug is working properly? It’s very simple - let the car cool down thoroughly, otherwise, when you start unscrewing the elements, you may get a severe burn. After turning off the ignition after a few seconds, the faulty spark plug will be wet from gasoline. Also see if the spark plug can produce a spark.

If the spark plug cannot be repaired so that the engine stops running, it is completely changed, and it is not necessary to contact a service station. Armed with a 10-12 key, turn off the elements responsible for the ignition. Then thoroughly clean the spark plug from dust, otherwise debris may get into the Lada Priora engine.

A tire compressor is suitable for this procedure; in extreme cases, a brush. Then remove the spark plug with a spark plug wrench, where the head with the gasket must be fixed. New devices are installed with the same screwing.

Supply system

If the Priora engine (16 valves) is tripping, the reasons may be trivial. When there is no flash in the cylinder, perhaps there is simply no fuel there. If it has a normal compression ratio, it is worth diagnosing the power system. You should pay maximum attention to the air filter and the pipe. It is necessary to make sure that the clamps are securely tightened, whether the purifier body itself is intact, and whether there is any air leakage from the outside. Also pay attention to the tubes. They must be tightly secured to the throttle assembly. Fuel leaks, cracks, and broken plastic may indicate that some parts are faulty.

Diagnostics of spark plugs by plaque

When the engine starts cold or hot, you can check the carbon deposits on the spark plugs. If the coating is white, then this indicates a lean mixture and overheating of the engine. A black tint indicates a rich mixture. In both the first and second cases there are problems with the operation of the electronics. This is either installing new firmware, or replacing the ECU. A normal candle has a brick color. By the way, the engine may stall at idle if the part is damp. This also significantly increases the warm-up time. In addition to the spark plugs, the ignition coil may also be acting up. Priora (8 valves) is equipped with distributor ignition. Overheating of the coil is often observed. You can restore the operation of the motor by simply replacing the element.

Trouble the engine: why is it dangerous?

This is a rather critical phenomenon, especially if the unit begins to vibrate during acceleration.

This behavior of the engine is especially dangerous when the driver decides to overtake, but there are cars in the oncoming lane. In the process, while the motor is running, the engine power is significantly reduced. The compression ratio decreases - there may not be enough dynamics to successfully complete the maneuver.

Considering that the Lada Priora has been manufactured since 2007, there are often instances where the engine knocks like on an old car 20 years ago. This is an engine running on three cylinders. It may have the latest firmware, but if the engine of a Lada Priora car is running rough and the check light is on, then such a car will not have much life left.

Troit on a cold Priora

VAZ (Lada) Priora 2007 - present

Troit when cold. How does it warm up to 50 degrees? everything passes. I was diagnosed, no one said anything. I installed new injectors, same thing. I changed the spark plugs twice and the coils too. Maybe it’s the hydraulic compensators that are sticking; the problem started after changing the oil.

Maybe so. It was necessary to take a printout of the diagnostics. To determine the non-working cylinder. Check the compression, you might find something.

A visual inspection is not a diagnostic, it should have shown which cylinder is misfiring, it won’t show if the valve is burnt out, measure the compression.

You can also look for air leaks in the intake manifold, for example through the VUT or crankcase ventilation ducts, throttle assembly. Some kind of strange diagnosis where no one said anything.

You need to look for the cylinder in which the leaks are occurring, try decoking for hydraulics (specifically for hydraulics), it can be poured into fresh oil and there will be no need to change the oil later.

The hydraulic compensators were also changed. Maybe it's the adsorber valve.

Even more useful tips in a convenient format

Hi all. Help is needed.

I've read a lot of topics and haven't found my case, only similar ones. In general, when it’s cold it starts and stalls, I sit for 3-4 minutes and rev up the gas and it starts up. Then it warms up and works great.

Diagnostics showed multiple misfires, misfires on cylinder 4, and a low signal from the knock sensor.

It all started when I arrived in Tambov from Moscow (it was dry in Moscow, but it rained in Tambov). Everything is dry under the hood, I removed the coils, there was a drop of oil on the coil in cylinder 4, I wiped it off, nothing changed. There is white carbon on the spark plugs and they have become difficult to pull.

The mass air flow sensor shows 8-9 kg/h, lambda is also within normal limits, jumping 0.3-0.5v. I swapped the coils, still missing on the 4th. I'll clean the injectors soon, but I'm not sure if that's the problem.

Has anyone had this happen, what was the reason?
