Procedure for replacing the Kalina air filter
So, first we open the hood of the Kalina and the first thing you need to do is disconnect the plug from the mass air flow sensor so that it does not interfere in the future. It is secured with a clamp that needs to be pressed up from below and pulled forcefully to the side.
It should come out without any problems. We take these wires to the side. They won’t get in our way anymore, but it’s better to hook them onto something, fix them somehow.
Now you can move on to the next step. Unscrew all 4 bolts that secure the air filter cover. It is best to use a thick Phillips screwdriver, but from personal experience I was convinced that the bolts are not tightened very tightly and a regular screwdriver is quite suitable, even a flat one.
After everything is unscrewed, it is enough to pull the lid with a little force to open it. We can say that everything is ready. We remove the old air filter by hand, simply pulling it, wipe everything thoroughly so that there is no dust left inside and replace it with a new one.
Don’t forget to place the element with its ribs forward, in the direction of movement, and firmly insert the sealing rubber on the filter body itself. We put the cover in place, tighten all the screws, and insert the same wire from the air sensor into its place. That's all. Do not forget that replacement must be done at least 30 thousand km in urban areas, and preferably no more than after 15 thousand km when operating in rural areas. Then dust and various debris will not get into the injector and the injection system of the Lada Kalina will work for a long time and without failure.
How to replace the air filter on a VAZ 1117-VAZ 1119?
Note! While working with the filter, you will most likely (But in principle you don’t have to do this, it will just be a little more difficult to lift the air filter cover) you will have to disconnect the wire block from the Mass Air Flow Sensor, and when working with any electronics, as many already know, you need to turn off the power battery so that there is no short circuit and other problems with electronics in the future! (For information on how to de-energize the battery so that current no longer flows from it to the on-board network, see the article entitled: “Replacing the battery on a VAZ”, in paragraph number 1 everything is indicated there)
Removal: 1) At the very beginning of the operation (As we said earlier, in principle this can not be done), disconnect the wire block from the sensor (the same air flow sensor and the block that is connected to it are indicated by an arrow), and the wire block is disconnected from it quite easy, to do this you just need to press the latch that holds this block (the latch is located on the wiring block itself) and after that you will need to disconnect the block from the sensor and put it somewhere so that it does not interfere.
2) Now that the block is disconnected and there is nothing stopping you from lifting the cover, take a screwdriver in your hands and use it to unscrew the four screws that secure this cover (Indicated by arrows), and after unscrewing, lift it or take out the air filter that will be located inside the case.
Installation: Installation of a new filter occurs in the reverse order of removal, but when installing, pay attention to the fact that all filters on injection cars are installed along the air filter housing and not across, so when installing a new filter, pay attention to the corrugations that are present on it (They are indicated by arrows) , so these corrugations will have to go longitudinally to the filter housing, you can see more details about this in the video clip which is located at the very bottom of the article.
Note! So, we recommend that before installing a new filter, wipe the entire inside of the housing and the entire inside of the housing cover with a clean cloth to remove dust and dirt, since even after installing the filter, it can fly into the car engine and dust, as we said earlier, erases both sandpaper the mirror part of the cylinder, which has a very negative effect on the engine of your car!
Additional video clip: So that you can clearly see the process of replacing the filter (Visually it’s always easier to remember, and even better with practice you will remember everything), watch the video clip located just below, in which everything is described in detail.
The role of the filter in a car
The Lada Kalina engine requires about 12-14 cubic meters of air for every 100 km of travel. In the intake manifold, it is mixed with fuel sprayed by the injector nozzles. The mixture then enters the cylinder chambers, where it is burned. The optimal proportion of air to fuel ensures that the engine achieves the characteristics declared by the manufacturer. It is no secret that a large volume of dust, suspended dirt and other compounds enters the intake receiver along with the air. The role of the filter is to ensure high-quality cleaning of the intake air, because it is a kind of barrier in the path of these negative particles.
If there was no air filter, then all the suspended dirt would inevitably fall inside the engine cylinders, gradually settling on its walls and accumulating in the oil system. This would lead to scoring on the walls of the liners and liners, which would require a major overhaul.
Gradual clogging of the filter element leads to a deterioration in its throughput and, as a consequence, to air starvation of the LADA Kalina engine. This is fraught with the formation of carbon deposits on the parts of the valve assembly and elements of the cylinder-piston group, because such combustion will be characterized by the presence of a fuel-enriched mixture above the permissible limit. This inevitably leads to increased fuel consumption and a decrease in the power level of the unit. Also, exhaust gases are endowed with increased toxicity.
In order not to contribute to the development of these factors, timely replacement of the air filter is imperative. ) recommends leaning towards such a procedure every 30 thousand km of the distance traveled, when the car is expected to be used primarily in urban conditions. If LADA Kalina spends most of its mileage in dusty conditions on country roads, then this interval should be reduced to 15 thousand km. These limits may change slightly, because the owner also needs to pay attention to the specifics of using his “horse”. To do this, you need to look into the air filter housing more often and change this element if there are signs of clogging.
How to replace the air filter
The process is quite simple and is not capable of “stressing” the owner of LADA Kalina into wasting time. We think any caring driver will have 30 minutes.
As a tool, you only need to use one Phillips screwdriver.
- Open the hood cover of the Lada Kalina and turn your gaze to the right side of the compartment where the filter element housing is located.
- Disconnect the connector of the sensor responsible for the mass air flow (MAF). The plug is held in place by a clamp, which we press from below, and then we pull the block of wires to the side.
- 3. You will need a screwdriver to remove the 4 screws that hold the housing cover tightly in place. We remove it using a little force.
- The filter is now accessible. Before removing it, pay attention to the location of the schematic arrow present on the filter frame.
- We install the new element correctly, observing the indicated moment with the arrow. Remember that its orientation must coincide with the direction of the air sucked into the tract.
- We recommend vacuuming the seat in the filter housing and wiping it with a dry cloth.
- Before installing the cover, check that the sealing rubber is positioned correctly.
- Now we connect the DMRV connector.
Part replacement procedure
Replacing the Kalina air filter is a fairly simple process that will take you no more than 20 minutes. In order to change this part on the Lada Kalina, you will not need any special skills or tools, you will only need a Phillips screwdriver. The replacement procedure is outlined below:
- Open the hood and locate the air filter housing on the right side of the engine compartment.
- Disconnect the plug from the mass fuel flow sensor. The sensor is located directly behind the air filter. The plug is attached to it using a latch; in order to remove it, you need to press the latch from bottom to top and forcefully pull the plug to the side.
- Using a screwdriver, unscrew the 4 screws that hold the filter housing cover and, using force, remove it.
- Under the cover you will find a filter element that needs to be changed. Remove it, but before removing it, remember the direction of the arrow on it. It should coincide with the direction of the corrugation.
- After removing the filter element, it is advisable to vacuum the place where it is installed or at least wipe it with a rag.
- Place the new filter element so that the direction of the marked arrow coincides with the direction of movement of the incoming air.
- Adjust the sealing rubber in the housing and put the cover in place.
- Reinstall the mass fuel flow sensor connector.
At this point, the replacement procedure can be considered complete. Now your car is insured against premature failure, and by replacing the filter, you have taken care of both yourself and the environment.
Replacing the Lada Kalina air filter is a simple and at the same time very important procedure. The filter plays a huge role in the formation of the fuel mixture, and untimely replacement can lead to a decrease in the vehicle's performance and serious engine damage.
When to change the air filter on Kalina?
Although modern filters are of better quality, a lot depends on the operating conditions of your vehicle, let’s say you often drive on dusty dirt roads, and this significantly reduces the life of the filter element and 30 thousand is out of the question.
Many car owners, of course, only drive on asphalt, but nevertheless, dust, dirt, and fluff inevitably get into the filter, no matter how much you want it.
Therefore, I would like to give a little advice to beginners: at least sometimes remove and blow out the filter with compressed air, this, so to speak, will allow your engine to breathe freely and it will thank you with its power and dynamics.
What can happen if the Kalina air filter is clogged:
- Loss of engine power.
- Increased fuel consumption.
- The mass air flow sensor (MAF) may fail.
Self-replacement of the Lada Kalina air filter
All actions will be carried out in the engine compartment, so open the hood and start changing the air filter.
What you will need:
- New air filter Lada Kalina.
- Screwdriver.
- Rags, rag.
So, the steps are very simple: remove the connector from the sensor (mass air flow sensor) and unscrew the four screws that are made to fit a shaped screwdriver (Phillips), you can unscrew them even if they are not very tightly tightened with a regular screwdriver.
We lift the upper part of the housing and take out the filter, after which we thoroughly wipe everything there. We install the new one with the strips forward in the direction of the air flow if there is a hint on the body.
Now we screw the screws back in, and most importantly, don’t forget to insert the connector onto the mass air flow sensor, which you removed before.
At this point, replacing the Lada Kalina air filter is considered complete. Never forget to change the filter on time, be it a fuel, oil, air or cabin filter.
Filters used in Lada Kalina
Viburnum uses three types of filters that are responsible for cleaning its liquid or air.
Viburnum filter:
- Fuel;
- Oily;
- Air;
These categories include the following filters.
Fuel:
- Fuel pump mesh;
- Fine fuel filter;
Oil:
- Oil purification filter;
Air:
- Engine air filter;
- Cabin filter;
Each of these filters strictly performs its own functions, and contamination of each of them negatively affects the operation of the area in which it is installed.
