Replacing box seals: subtleties and tricks

The gearbox of almost any modern car has oil seals for the input shaft, right and left CV joints. Their number may vary depending on whether the car is equipped with rear- or front-wheel drive. This part is needed to prevent oil leakage directly from the gearbox housing. The oil seal is a consumable item, so the gearbox oil seal often needs to be replaced. Another function that puts additional stress on this element is protection against dust and dirt getting inside.

It is impossible to give a definite answer to the question of exactly how much the presented work costs; the price is determined by many factors, including depending on what type of oil seal needs to be replaced (input shaft, right or left CV joint). High-quality repair of a manual transmission usually does not take more than a day (if you change the input shaft oil seal) or may even take 4-5 hours.

  • Where is the gearbox seal located?
  • Transmission seal replacement process
  • Important nuances when replacing the gearbox seal

Where is the gearbox seal located?

The gearbox oil seal is located in the clutch housing on the inside of the box, and therefore its replacement is possible only after disconnecting the housing. To carry out the work of replacing the oil seal, you will need an inspection pit or overpass. Before starting work, reliable stops are placed under the wheels of a car standing on a pit or overpass to prevent its accidental movement.

Materials for replacing the gearbox seal

- keys for “10”, “13”.

- a curved slotted screwdriver or something similar to a crochet hook.

- awl.

- plastic pipe from under water.

For such repairs you will need an inspection hole or overpass. Important! When you go into a hole, be sure to immobilize the vehicle using the parking brake and chocks.

Transmission seal replacement process

If the oil seal has become unusable, it cannot be restored or repaired; it must be immediately replaced with a new part. The most common reasons that the oil seal stops performing its functions correctly are:

— wear and tear from long service life;

— mechanical damage from impact;

- deformation.

In these situations, the only correct solution is to replace the gearbox seal. The quality of the work performed will largely determine how long the gearbox itself will work from defects. These works are often carried out in conjunction with replacing the CV joint. The initial stage of work is diagnosing the condition of the gearbox; usually (in this case it all depends on the make of the car) its repair becomes necessary after 70 thousand kilometers. The cost of work and the speed of troubleshooting will largely depend on timely contact with specialists.

Before repairing the gearbox, the drive shafts are removed and the internal elements of the CV joint are dismantled. This is a necessary procedure in order to gain direct access to the seal. Before installing a new element, it must be treated with grease. The oil seal is mounted in its place under the influence of a special tool - a mandrel.

We recommend: How do car window closers work?

1. Place the car on a lift.

2. Disconnect the wire from the terminal.

3. Remove the flywheel.

4. Remove the rear shield of the clutch housing, which is directed towards the bushings.

5. Unscrew the bolts (8 pieces).

6. Remove the holder from the part.

7. Now you need to knock it out of the gearbox; to do this, use a screw and a hammer.

8. Now we take the new element and press it into the holder. Outer diameter -99(±0.5) mm.

9. The working edge should be on the inside, if so, turn it over.

10. A gasket that is torn must be removed. It will stay in place thanks to the grease on the holder.

11. Lubricate the edge with engine oil.

12. Also lubricate the crankshaft flange with engine oil.

13. Place the working edge onto the flange.

14. Tighten the bolts.

15. Reinsert the crankcase and bushings.

16. Replace the flywheel and clutch.

Done, the gearbox seal has been successfully replaced. Let your car drive for a long time and not leak. A good owner's car is always in excellent condition. So it all depends on you! Monitor and check, take it for diagnostics on time if necessary. And try not to waste a lot of money on service centers, but also don’t try to do everything yourself if you don’t understand this area.

Important nuances when replacing the gearbox seal

1. To replace the seals of the internal joints of the front wheel drive, drain the oil from the gearbox.

2. The front wheel drive inner joint seals can be replaced without removing the gearbox from the vehicle.

3. Do not disconnect both front wheel drives at the same time, as the side gears will move inside the differential box and reinstallation of the drives will become impossible.

Gearbox seal VAZ 2107 - description and purpose

An oil seal is a special seal in a vehicle that is necessary to seal gaps and cracks. For example, in a gearbox, the oil seal plays a vital role - it is fixed at the junction between the moving and stationary mechanisms, preventing oil from leaking out of the gearbox.

The oil seals in the VAZ 2107 gearbox are not made of rubber, as most drivers believe. In fact, this product is constantly in the transmission oil, and to keep production to a minimum, manufacturers make oil seals from CSP and NBR composite materials. At the same time, the gasket feels equally “good” at any temperature - from -45 to +130 degrees Celsius.

Box seal dimensions

The gearbox itself on the “seven” is designed for many years of service. However, the service life of the device directly depends on how often (and in a timely manner) the driver changes the seals. Indeed, during the operation of the machine, it is the oil seals and sealing joints that are the first to fail (tear, wear out, squeeze out). Therefore, timely replacement of the oil seal will help prevent expensive repairs of other gearbox mechanisms.

For proper replacement, you need to know the dimensions of the VAZ 2107 gearbox seals:

  1. The input shaft seals have a weight of 0.020 kg and dimensions of 28.0x47.0x8.0 mm.
  2. The secondary shaft seals weigh a little more - 0.028 kg and have the following dimensions - 55x55x10 mm.

Products are made to the strict standards of the modern rubber industry

Which ones are better

The main question for any VAZ 2107 driver when repairing the gearbox is: which oil seal is best to put on the shafts to avoid rapid wear? In fact, there is no universal option.

The standard equipment of the shafts involves the use of Vologda oil seals, but if necessary, you can install any others, even imported ones.

Industry leaders can be considered:

  • OJSC "BalakovoRezinoTekhnika" (main materials of manufacture - composites and alloys);
  • (the main manufacturing material is thermoplastic elastomers);
  • (made from rubber compounds with various additives).

The most affordable oil seal for a box shaft costs 90 rubles; the more modern the manufacturing technology, the more expensive the product will be valued.

The quality of goods is regulated by the State Quality Standard (GOST) or technical production conditions (TO), which is indicated in the relevant accompanying documentation.

According to Article 4 of the Law “On Protection of Consumer Rights”, the seller is obliged to provide the buyer with a product suitable for use and corresponding to the description, taking into account its expiration date and service life.

If all standards are observed, gearbox seals are of good quality.

The period for exchange and return of gearbox seals of proper quality is 14 days.

Conditions

Based on paragraph 1 of Article 25 of the Law “On Protection of Consumer Rights”, the seller is obliged to accept goods of proper quality subject to the following conditions:

Basic

  • The product has not been used
  • Presentation and packaging preserved
  • There is no violation of labels and seals
  • Availability of cash or sales receipts

If the receipt is missing, then a refund is possible, supported by witness testimony.

If the purchase of gearbox seals was carried out in an online store, then an electronic payment document can be used as evidence.

In the absence of documents confirming the purchase, the seller rarely accepts the goods back. In this case, you must contact the consumer rights supervision service or Rospotrebnadzor.

Procedure

The buyer must perform the following actions:

  1. Draw up an application in 2 copies and give it to the seller. One copy remains with the buyer, and a mark indicating acceptance of the application is placed on it. The second copy remains with the seller.
  2. Give the seller the gearbox seals in their entire packaging. In this case, labels and seals must be intact. After delivery, the buyer’s copy is marked with acceptance of the goods.
  3. Present a document confirming the purchase of the goods at this particular outlet.
  4. Provide an identification document.

The application must indicate the requirement. That is, what is needed, a refund or exchange of goods. The seller is obliged to satisfy this requirement within no more than 3 days from the date of filing the application.

Refusal to accept the application

If the seller refuses to accept the application, it must be sent to the store by registered mail with notification of receipt. In this case, the recipient must be the head of the outlet. The name of the manager can be found in the “Consumer Corner”, which is in every store. The recipient's address must be actual, not legal.

If the return period has expired

The Law on Consumer Rights clearly defines return periods. It was decided that 14 days is enough for the buyer to decide whether he needs the product.

It is not possible to extend this period. An exception is the return of goods to online stores, where the return period is 3 months, unless other conditions are specified additionally.

Signs of oil seal destruction

The seals are located directly on the shafts inside the box, so their wear can be visually determined only when disassembling the gearbox. However, any driver can quickly detect oil seal damage by eye, because there are obvious symptoms:

  1. Transmission oil leaks under the car.
  2. Constantly low oil level in the box.
  3. Problems with shifting gears while driving.
  4. Crunching and grinding in the gearbox when changing gears.

There are plenty of options. If there is an oil leak at the junction of the clutch bell and the engine, then it could be either the engine crankshaft rear oil seal or the gearbox input shaft oil seal. If there is a leak at the junction of the clutch bell and the gearbox body, the gasket is kaput. If it is wet at the rear end of the box - the gasket or oil seal of the secondary shaft

Electrician

It would seem how the performance of such a complex unit as a gearbox can depend on a small part. However, loss of tightness for the box is fraught with big problems, because even minor losses of transmission oil will immediately affect the lubrication of moving elements.

Oil leaks under the gearbox are the first and most obvious sign of oil seal failure.

It is recommended to change the oil seals in the VAZ 2107 box every 60 - 80 thousand kilometers. The replacement is associated with an oil change, so it will be convenient for the driver to perform these works at the same time. Before this period, it is necessary to change the oil seal only when there are clear signs of its destruction.

Causes of clutch oiling

The reason for oily clutch is a leak of the crankshaft rear oil seal or the gearbox input shaft oil seal. Transmission and engine oils have different smells. Therefore, an experienced car enthusiast can recognize by the smell of oil which of the seals has failed and requires replacement. In this case, you will have to remove the gearbox from the car.

Replacing the input shaft oil seal

  • To remove the box, remove the CV joints as described above.
  • Instead of one of the CV joints, we insert an old one or a special plug to prevent the differential from falling apart.
  • We unscrew the fastening bolts (there are three of them) and remove the clutch housing shield.
  • Loosen the bolts and nuts securing the clutch housing to the block.
  • We place suitable wooden blocks located in the area of the strut supports on the wing flanges and install a cross beam on them to hang the engine.

Warning: The beam rests solely on the wing flanges! Otherwise, you risk denting the body.

  • We attach the engine to the beam using a long bolt with a hook.
  • A strong rope or wire is also suitable for this.

We hook the engine by the eye to the beam. The beam rests only on the wing flanges

  • Unscrew the two nuts securing the rear engine mount to the body.
  • Unscrew the nut and take out the left support bolt.
  • Unscrew the three nuts securing the left engine mount to the gearbox and remove the mount.

Unscrew the three nuts securing the left support to the gearbox

  • We finally unscrew the bolts (three pieces) and the nut (on the back of the gearbox).
  • When removing the gearbox from a VAZ 2109, we first move it horizontally away from the engine to remove the input shaft from the clutch discs.
  • Be careful not to damage the clutch spring petals.
  • Remove the clutch release bearing.
  • We unscrew the three bolts securing the guide bushing (there are spring washers under the bolts).
  • Remove the guide sleeve.

We unscrew the bolts that secure the guide sleeve. After removing the bushing we take out the oil seal

  • Using a suitable wire hook, remove the oil seal from the gearbox.
  • We press in a new one using a mandrel of suitable diameter.
  • The working edge is directed inside the gearbox.

Tip: Before installing the gearbox on a VAZ 2109, it is recommended to lubricate the outside surface of the guide bushing and splines of the input shaft, as well as the release bearing, with grease. Align the clutch driven disc using a special drift (an old input shaft with good splines will do)

  • We install a gearbox on the car.
  • Before attaching the front wheel drives, we replace the retaining rings at the ends of the inner CV joints.
  • Otherwise, there is a possibility that the drives will jump out of the gearbox when the vehicle is moving.
  • We finally tighten the nut that secures the brace to the lever on the loaded suspension while the car is already on the ground.
  • Change the oil in the gearbox (see VAZ 2109 changing gearbox oil - do it right).

This is how oil seals are replaced, there is nothing super complicated about it, in addition you can watch the video.

Input shaft oil seal

The input shaft oil seal is located directly on part of the input shaft and is in contact with the clutch housing. Therefore, to replace this product, you will need to remove the casing.

To work you will need to prepare:

  • nut heads;
  • hammer;
  • puller;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • knife (they are most convenient for removing the old gasket);
  • new oil seal;
  • transmission oil;
  • new input shaft seal.

The oil seal acts as a connecting gasket between the shaft and the clutch mechanisms

The procedure for replacing the seal can be carried out either on the removed box or directly on the car. However, it is easier and faster to change the product on a dismantled gearbox:

  1. Disconnect the gear shift fork from the box.
  2. Remove the release bearing by clamping it with a puller.
  3. Unscrew the six nuts securing the clutch housing.
  4. Remove the casing from the box.
  5. Use the tip of a knife or screwdriver to pry up the old oil seal on the input shaft and remove it.
  6. It is good to clean the landing area so that there are no traces of the seal, spraying or oil leaks.
  7. Install a new oil seal, having previously lubricated it with transmission oil.
  8. Next, assemble the box in reverse order.

Two ways to replace the gearbox seal on a VAZ-2110

It is easier to change the oil seal with the gearbox removed.

Replacing an element that has become unusable can be done in two ways.

  1. The first of them is very labor-intensive , since it will be necessary to remove the gearbox. But replacing the oil seal will be much easier.
  2. The second method seems less time-consuming and labor-intensive , but in practice it is very difficult to carry out this procedure. Only experienced motorists who have repeatedly had to repair their cars can replace the oil seal directly on the car without removing the gearbox.

Troubleshooting

Experienced car owners know the visual reasons why they can determine the failure of the rocker seal. Naturally, for such reasons it is impossible to accurately determine the cause of the leak, but this gives a signal to carry out diagnostics, in which the cause of the oil leak can be accurately identified.

The most important sign is oil stains under the car, especially in the gearbox area.

An oily rubber boot indicates a malfunction of the rocker seal.

But these spots do not always indicate oil seal failure. It happens that this is due to the oil filter, which sometimes does not tighten properly. In any case, the driver is obliged to monitor for any oil leaks in the checkpoint area . To do this, you need to monitor the oil level. This is the only way to save the box from damage, which will certainly happen if it operates with a minimum amount of oil.

Another way that indicates the oil seal is worn out is a characteristic crunch that is heard when changing gears . But only an experienced VAZ-2110 owner can diagnose this crunch. In any case, if you hear unusual sounds when shifting into gear, it is better to diagnose the gearbox.

Set of tools required for replacement

A minimum set of tools for replacing the oil seal without removing the gearbox.

In order for the replacement of a part to take place without problems, you need to prepare the place and the necessary set of tools in advance. You will need:

  1. A set of keys and sockets, and for 13 you need two keys and there must be a key for 10. There must also be a socket head for 22.
  2. A chisel or screwdriver will be needed to knock out the oil seal.
  3. The hammer is small so you can get under it.
  4. Silicone sealant.
  5. Awl and hook.

Additional accessories

A regular self-tapping screw will allow you to do without a special puller.

For those who decide to replace the gearbox seal without removing it from the car, you will need additional equipment:

  1. Several long screws.
  2. A piece of pipe for pressing in a new oil seal.

It should be noted that the replacement process without removing the gearbox is much more complicated. In addition, there is a possibility of damaging the part being replaced during pressing.

Secondary shaft oil seal

This gasket is located on the secondary shaft and disconnects it from the box flange. In this regard, replacing the secondary shaft oil seal proceeds according to a different scheme and is very different from working on the primary shaft.

To replace you will need:

  • spanners;
  • screwdriver with a flat thin blade;
  • puller;
  • pliers;
  • transmission oil.

The oil seal seals the gap between the output shaft and the flange

The work progresses according to the following algorithm on the removed gearbox:

  1. Firmly fix the box flange so that it does not move.
  2. Turn the nut securing it with a wrench.
  3. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry up the metal ring and pull it out from the secondary shaft.
  4. Place the puller against the end of the shaft.
  5. Press out the flange together with the fixing washer.
  6. Use pliers to grab the old oil seal.
  7. Clean the seating area and install a new oil seal.
  8. Next, assemble the structure in reverse order.

Return of gearbox seals of inadequate quality (defective)

A product of poor quality or defective is considered to be one that has deviations from the normal one.

Marriage if

  • There are deviations in appearance from normal, or the equipment is not complete;
  • There are shortcomings due to which the gearbox seals are not able to meet the expected needs of the buyer;
  • There are shortcomings that prevent the product from fulfilling its direct functional purpose;
  • Characteristics differ from those stated in the accompanying documentation;
  • The parameters do not correspond to GOST or TU, according to which the goods were produced.

Reasons for return

There are different types of marriage.

ViewDescription
OrdinaryThe quality of the product does not meet the standards established for it
EssentialDefects are difficult to remove and may require a high investment of time and money
ExplicitThis type of defect is detected during a routine inspection. It is also detected at the technical control stage
HiddenThis type of defect is discovered during the operation of the product or during long-term storage

Any of the above types of defects allows you to return the gearbox seals to a store or other retail outlet.

However, it is not possible to return the goods in the following cases:

  1. If the defect arose due to the actions of the buyer;
  2. If the buyer was informed in advance about the existing defects;
  3. If the warranty period has expired.

The warranty period is the period during which the manufacturer or seller provides the buyer with the right to return a defective product. It is installed on each item separately, depending on the characteristics of a particular product and legal requirements.

The warranty period includes:

  • warranty from the manufacturer - which is established by the manufacturer in accordance with the law (for example, in GOST);
  • warranty from the point of sale - which must be no less than the period specified by the manufacturer.

The buyer can return the product within two years after purchase, even if the warranty period has expired. However, this requires serious reasons. And the return procedure in this case will be complicated.

Buyer's rights

If the gearbox seals are of poor quality, that is, violations and defects are detected, then according to Article 18 of the Law “On Protection of Consumer Rights” the buyer has the right to a number of claims.

The buyer has the right to:

  • To return and receive money;
  • To exchange the product for a new one with the same declared characteristics;
  • To carry out repairs free of charge;
  • To exchange for a product with other characteristics with payment of the difference in price
  • By agreement of the parties, a reduction in the price of the product equal to the amount of the defect found.

It is important to consider that the choice of one of the above items should be made by the buyer, but not by the seller.

Procedure

If after purchase a faulty transmission seal is discovered, the first thing the buyer should do is contact the seller. At the initial stage, you should try to come to an agreement with him verbally, but if nothing works out, then you need to move on to serious action.
