Fifthly, it is highly advisable to check the leakage current when the battery is known to be charged. If it is “dead”, then the device will show underestimated readings, and again you will not see the real picture of what is happening.

How to check and determine current leakage

To check and measure the total leakage current, use a multimeter, which is connected to the positive wire of the battery, the terminal is removed from it, and the probes of the multimeter in current measurement mode close the circuit through the ammeter.

However, remember that the moment the terminal is removed, the radio’s memory will be reset, and when power is restored via the multimeter, all on-board electronics units will “wake up” and the alarm will sound. Energy consumption will increase significantly, and it will be impossible to talk about measurement accuracy.

Therefore, it’s easier to complicate the method a little: taking a small battery, first connect it to the positive and negative cables of the car battery, and only then remove the terminal - in this case the power supply will not be interrupted, and the car will continue to remain in “sleep” mode. By connecting a multimeter between the main battery and the terminal, you can disconnect the additional battery - at this moment the tester will begin to show the real leakage current in the car. Before returning the terminal to its place, we will first connect the additional battery in the same way, and then disconnect the tester probes.

What is considered normal and abnormal leakage current? Ideally, measure it in advance on a working car - this is the norm. If this is not possible, then focus on the average data: a current of more than 50-60 mA already raises suspicions; one approaching 100 mA already indicates the probable presence of problems. Current consumption above 0.1-0.15 A is clearly outside the norm.

It is easier to check the leak if it is a generator: having removed the power terminal from it, turn on the multimeter again, but this time between the battery and the generator. With this connection, the ammeter will only show the reverse current of the diode bridge.

With the rest of the on-board electronics, you will have to use the sequential shutdown method: alternately turning off the radio, alarm, and so on, see how much the total leakage current changes - turning off a properly functioning unit has little effect on the leakage, but a faulty or incorrectly connected one will immediately reveal itself by a drop in the leakage current by significant percentage.

Disabling can be done by removing the corresponding fuse. By removing the fuses, we open the circuits in the on-board network one by one.

If the car is parked for a very long time and is not used, then after the driver turns the key in the ignition, nothing will happen. In the process, the relay may click, perhaps even the starter will come to life. But even if it rotates the crankshaft, it is not enough. All of these are symptoms of the battery being discharged while the car was parked.

Relay test

Another item that needs checking if you have electrical problems is the relay of this component. Relays are used in high power appliances and are electrically activated switches. When you turn on your car, several components turn on, such as the fuel pump, computer, and electric fans.

The switch in your ignition can activate multiple relays, turning all the peripheral equipment without running full power through the ignition switch. Relays can also deteriorate over time and cause electrical problems.

The best way to test the relay is to have a working replacement or listen carefully to how the relay operates while turning on the device. You should feel light pressure and hear a soft click when the relay turns on.

Repairing the leak

When a leak is identified, it is necessary to begin eliminating the cause. Before performing any operations, the battery terminals must be removed. Solutions:

  • Accumulation of dirt at the connection areas - dust and dirt should be removed using an alcohol solution.
  • The insulation is damaged - close the internal conductors and provide protection from further exposure to negative factors (put on a hose to prevent overheating and chafing);
  • Water or fogging in devices - dry. If water gets inside the alarm unit, you need to carefully open the module. After moistening with alcohol, wait for the water and dirt to drain. After removing fogging, come up with a protective cover that prevents moisture from penetrating inside.
  • Malfunctioning electronic device - repair or replacement.

Having eliminated the cause of the leak, you should again check the current consumption rate with a multimeter.
