Crash test of Lada Xray using the RCAR method: how much will the repair cost?

Lada Vesta passed our “insurance” crash test using the RCAR method with a bang. And what about its half-brother, the XRAY hatchback: how much will it cost to restore it after a frontal impact from a speed of 15 km/h?

After meeting the barrier, XRAY waved its brushes in surprise: as happened on potholes on a cobblestone road, the shock caused the steering column lever to jump. Damage? The bumper cover was cracked, the hood was dented, the headlight was askew—we've seen worse faces after such blows. But there are small dents on both front fenders: this was done by the lining, which grabbed them with a death grip. But what’s worse is that the left wing, which had moved back, blocked the driver’s door, and the hood, which rested against the same wing near the windshield pillar, prevented the wing from being loosened and moved slightly forward. So we had to evacuate the dummy through the passenger door, get behind the wheel in the same manner and go to our technical center - fortunately, nothing leaked or fell off under the hood of Ixray.

It was possible to break the closed, or rather, blocked circle, only with difficulty reaching the fastening of the hood to the left hinge: first they broke it, and then, by slightly moving the wing, the door.

The left wing was also damaged at the point of attachment to the mudguard.

And having finally separated the bumper lining from the wings, Uncle Vanya already whistled: immediately behind the left edge of the fairly dented cross beam, the designers installed an electronic transmission control unit and an electric power steering pump along with a reservoir. It’s good that both units escaped with only bent mounting brackets. What if the blow was more serious?

After all, XRAY is not Vesta; it is made from a different, looser dough. After similar blows to the related Nissan Almera, Renault Sandero and Duster, we dubbed the design of the front of the B0 platform plasticine - and XRAY, alas, was no exception. True, the cross beam on the Lada, unlike its counterparts, is conditionally removable: it is attached to the ends of the side members with bolts instead of welding. Why conditional? Because for the sake of structural strength, the beam, in addition to the fasteners, is placed on such a generous layer of sealant that tearing it off is no easier than cutting it off.

All machines of the B0 architecture are deprived of “accordions”, that is, zones of programmable deformation. And therefore the role of the crushed element had to be played by the front part of the prefabricated left spar, which opened like a rose: the channel parted with the amplifier. And in addition, the subframe mounting bracket welded to the spar was deformed - fortunately the subframe itself remained unharmed, and the wave of deformation did not sweep further and did not wash away the remaining normal alignment angles of the front wheels.

In addition to the top shelf, its mounting posts were also damaged.

But the radiator of the engine cooling system took a hit: the beam located closely, bent, gave way to it so that, although it retained its tightness, it lost its lower attachment to the subframe. The upper body shelf had a hard time, and along with it, both (upper and lower) left pillars of its fastening rose up like a hump. The left mudguard of the engine compartment was dented, so much so that the wing attachment to it was also deformed. And the list of damage, alas, is crowned by not only the left headlight with a completely broken housing, but also the right one with broken mounting ears.

The scope of work is clear. How much will the repair cost?

On the way from the test site, we stopped at the nearest dealer near Moscow - this is Yakhroma-Lada on Dmitrovskoe Highway. The craftsmen busily “stripped” the XRAY and soon delivered a verdict: the hood, bumper trim, crossbar, top shelf, cooling system radiator and left headlight went to the landfill. But the entire spar does not need to be changed - only the damaged front part.

The promise to return the slightly dented right fender, the left mudguard of the engine compartment and the radiator shelf mounting rack to its original form was not surprising. However, in addition, they promised us not only to straighten the much more damaged left wing, but also to solder the broken plastic fastenings of the right headlight for 2,550 rubles. Atypical for a dealer - and very nice for the budget. Because one Xray headlight costs almost twenty thousand! And the bumper lining is made of nothing other than especially valuable types of plastic: then why would it cost at least twice as much as a similar part of the same Vesta?

In the calculation, which was sent to us by e-mail after the promised couple of days, the long list of spare parts culminated in the amount of 107 thousand rubles - consider that the entire “dealer” repair of the Lada Vesta will cost the same! And the waiting time for parts, as in the case of Vesta, was not encouraging: three to four weeks. It’s good that they didn’t break the price for the work: 40 thousand rubles for a decent amount of work is very godly.

Spare parts for repairs from official dealers will cost twice as much as labor

Specialists from the Autogermes company, located on Moscow's Krasnaya Sosna Street, estimated their efforts at almost 60 thousand (a standard hour costs not 850 rubles, but a thousand) - although they did not undertake to repair either the left wing or the right headlight. In the calculation they indicated much less necessary consumables than colleagues from Yakhroma-Lada, but at first they completely forgot about the front panel - I had to prompt them. Otherwise, the course of treatment for our XRAY was prescribed a similar one, and if we had decided to repair XRAY here, we would have paid at least 175 thousand rubles.

At the Torgmash dealership, built in the north of the Moscow ring road, a whole council looked at our Lada in surprise: you, they say, are the first on Ixray. Apparently, due to an excess of feelings, they didn’t even notice the damaged radiator, and instead of slightly adjusting the power steering bracket, they offered to replace the entire serviceable unit for 22,675 rubles. A long dispute about which of the event participants should draw up a list of damages culminated in several hours of waiting for the car and the highest fee for troubleshooting - 3,700 rubles. And we only creakingly demanded the calculation itself after a lot of phone calls nine days later! Spare parts without notes like EGUR would have cost 114 thousand, but the work was estimated at almost 80 thousand rubles. After all, if colleagues from Yakhroma allow themselves ten standard minutes to remove a headlight, then in Torgmash they set aside as much as forty for this most complex operation. And it takes a whole working day to paint and replace the bumper trim.

No, we'd better hurry up. Maybe from unofficial people?

We visited several workshops and were convinced that we couldn’t do without replacing parts of the side member, hood, left headlight and crossbar. But the right headlight and radiator at the GSK body service on Korneychuk Street and the MBS technical center on Melnikov Street, we undertook to return it to its original form. For the services you would have to pay 45 thousand rubles, and the parts from the shortened list would cost 60 thousand - a total of 105 thousand. It’s still a bit expensive: a dealer repair of the Lada Vesta would cost only a little more.

Restoration in a universal workshop is one and a half times cheaper than a dealership

At the Whiteside service station on Yuzhnoportovaya Street and in an unnamed workshop near Varshavskoye Shosse, they promised us the biggest savings on spare parts - not only by soldering and puttying the bumper trim, but also by patching the top shelf along with its racks. However, isn’t this the case when the miser pays twice? Moreover, funds from insurers must cover both garage repairs and restoration at the dealer. Specialists from the federal expert company Delta, to whom we traditionally turned for an answer, counted 154,300 rubles in payments under Casco and as much as 168,800 under compulsory motor liability insurance—more than that.

Perhaps this is the best that XRAY can boast after the blow. Indeed, in our ranking of costs in terms of the cost of body repairs at dealers, it was ahead of both the Lada Vesta and the Lada Granta and only symbolically lagged behind the Renault Sandero - but it was also inferior to it in terms of restoration costs in universal workshops due to high costs for spare parts.

And this, by the way, is not the end of the Ixree epic. Remember the problems with the 1.8 engine? The story about them is yet to come.

The new Russian car Lada X-Ray is produced by AvtoVAZ with the expectation of receiving high quality marks not only from Russian, but also from foreign experts. The domestic manufacturer has set itself the goal of making a reliable and safe crossover that will be able to protect the driver and passengers from injury if the car gets into a traffic accident or under other unfavorable circumstances. Lada Xray has received a number of effective security systems that will increase its chances of passing testing.

In order to gain authority and trust from foreign experts and car enthusiasts, the manufacturers of the Lada X-Ray plan to receive three stars based on crash test results in the prestigious Euro NCAP rating. One of the tasks that the Lada X Ray car was supposed to provide was guaranteed driver safety in any, even the most unfavorable situations. To achieve this, the car was equipped with effective security systems. AvtoVAZ believes that when passing the most prestigious crash test in the Euro NCAP rating, the Lada X Ray should receive three stars. Design solutions ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers

The developers of the Lada X Ray car laid down a high level of safety at the design stage. In addition, the car has a reinforced body equipped with a number of structural elements that improve safety. These include:

  • built-in roof reinforcements;
  • safety bars in all doors;
  • additional protective beams in bumpers;
  • side body pillars.

During the development process, many parts were tested using a computer and only then embodied in metal.

Successful completion of a crash test is impossible without equipping the vehicle with passive safety systems. The use of the well-known VO platform as a layout diagram made it possible to equip the vehicle with a large number of such systems, including:

  • effective system for securing child seats;
  • three-point inertial seat belts for the driver and all passengers;
  • belt tensioners;
  • L-shaped headrests;
  • automatic door unlocking upon impact;
  • front and side airbags.

The car is also equipped with the most modern electronic safety systems, including ABS, EBD, BAS, ESP, TCS, etc.

Crash test methods

In world practice, the term “crash test” is used to refer to testing vehicles for safety. These tests simulate different types of road traffic accidents in order to find out what kind of damage those involved can suffer. In this case, instead of living people, special mannequins are used. There are a large number of different types of crash tests, but the most common are tests carried out using the following methods:

  1. Euro NCAP methodology. The modern, most prestigious type of comprehensive testing, which includes:
  • frontal collision at a speed of 64 km/h with a deformable barrier, with the impact occurring at 40% of the width of the front of the vehicle (driver's side);
  • side collision at a speed of 55 km/h with a deformable barrier;
  • head-on collision at a speed of 55 km/h with a rigid barrier.

Based on the results of three tests, the overall safety rating of the car is determined using points and a 5-point system.

Characteristics of power units.

The engines intended for the Lada X-ray are also used on other AvtoVAZ models (Kalina 2, Priora, Granta, Vesta) and demonstrate reliability and a high level of performance indicators.

Engine VAZ-21129.

The VAZ engine 21129 was created as a modification of the famous engine 21127.

Among the important design changes that deserve attention:

  • The use of flaps in the intake manifold that dynamically change its length. The result is obtaining an optimal mode at high and, partially, low.
  • Replacing the mass air flow sensor with a pair that controls temperature and pressure. The modification is designed to improve control of the fuel-air mixture and eliminate instability at idle.
  • Modernization of the exhaust system;
  • Firmware change.

Despite all the positive reviews, the engine has a significant drawback - it is rather weak for a heavy X-ray, as fuel consumption and dynamics indicators clearly indicate.

As with the previous one, the prototype of the motor was the 21126/21127 series.

However, the power unit has undergone significant modifications:

  • By increasing the radius of the crankshaft, the stroke of the pistons became longer, which, while maintaining the diameter of the cylinders, ensured an increase in working volume and power.
  • Mahle valves are installed in the engine cylinder head.
  • The throttle valve lost its mechanical drive (the gas pedal became electronic).
  • The diameter of the collector inlet channels has increased to 39mm.

X-Ray, despite numerous criticisms, is one of the best domestically produced cars. For little money, the buyer is provided with a large range of different options. At the same time, the presence of specific functions is not considered a marketing detail, but is a completely justified necessity.

Automatic activation of the Era-GLONASS system - we reject the emergency call. The first glance at the car after an impact makes experts wary - a small crease on the windshield pillar, for modern cars with strong bodies, this is not typical - a bad “bell”.

We look at the threshold on the driver's side - it has sagged a little, the driver's dummy is sitting low, its knees resting on the panel, the seat has sank down along with the floor. The door opened without the help of a special tool, but noticeably wedged in the opening. The passenger appears to be doing quite well based on a quick examination.

The front part of the car was crushed as much as possible in order to dissipate the force of the frontal impact and not transfer it to the power cell of the passenger compartment. The video shows how the spar has folded. But the deformation went further - the subframe folded, but not enough, and transferred the impact to the floor under the driver's seat, as evidenced by the folds in the bottom and the crease in the strength part of the frame. That's why the driver's seat sank.

Unlike the Lada Vesta Cross, which had tears in these places, the body of the X Ray remained intact. The video above clearly shows that the threshold of the car and its bottom were not torn apart after the crash test - there is a deflection, but the metal is intact. The engineers' fears about the enlarged front wheels, which could worsen the picture of body deformation in the driver's seat area, were not justified; everything is fine.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the restraint system of the safety system - airbags and belts with “pretension”. If we compare with French brands, then when the airbags deployed on Logan, the mannequin’s face suffered a strong blow, and the belts did not cope with their task - to protect against hitting the head on the airbag that had fired. In the Lada X Ray Cross, during the crash test, the airbags worked as expected by the engineers, and the belts worked as expected.
