Real disadvantages of Lada XRay: 3 years of testing revealed the disadvantages of the model

Production of the Lada XRay at AvtoVAZ began on December 15, 2015, and sales began on February 14, 2021 at 120 dealers in 56 cities. During 2016-2018 the car was mercilessly tested by many car owners and based on their reviews we can talk about the pros and cons of Xray.

Almost three years that have passed since the start of sales have allowed the owners of the purchased cars to test them in a variety of operating conditions, and this testing not only confirmed the declared ones, but also revealed shortcomings that the concern is working on already during the production process.

From the many different reviews from car enthusiasts, we will select the negative ones, consider their reasoning and group them into areas:

  • Body;
  • Trunk;
  • Salon;
  • Engine;
  • Optics;
  • Transmission;
  • Brake system.

Body

Lada Xray was expected since 2012, moreover, as a crossover, but, 3 years later, to the disappointment of those expecting the presentation, it still resembled a small hatchback with increased ground clearance to 195 mm and only front-wheel drive.

The spectacular profile of the sides of the Lada X Ray, the embossing of the doors and wings has a downside - the difficulty of restoring oval contours on these body parts after damage.

There are no roof rails on the XRay roof, so it is not possible to install a roof rack on top, other than a rare universal one from the 60s, and the price of foreign-made luggage boxes is several tens of thousands of rubles.

The hood in the open position is fixed low - by a short strut, which makes access to the engine compartment inconvenient - you have to bend over.

The body sills are not protected by any coating underneath, and as a result of the abrasive effect of gravel flying from under the wheels (common to a crossover), they quickly begin to corrode.

The volume of the Lada XRay fuel tank is small for a crossover - only 50 liters. In addition, the gas tank is equipped with a primitive metal inlet neck without drainage or any protective linings. The hatch cover, behind which the neck is located, is disproportionately large, does not have any locking device and opens freely from the outside without driver intervention.

The side mirrors of the Lada XRay, given the height of the car, are small, so they are not only visually disproportionate to the body, but also have little information. At the same time, the amplitude of mirror adjustments (the travel of the adjusting lever) is clearly insufficient, since tall drivers who move the seat far back have to manually install the mirror element into a comfortable position through the lowered window of the driver's door.

The protection of the engine compartment from below needs improvement, since the engine becomes very dirty even after a short off-road drive.

The doors of the Lada XRay do not have fixed positions after opening, which is inconvenient when there is wind or the car is stopped on a slope.

XRay glass, both side and windshield, has low abrasion resistance. After a few months of use, scratches appear on the windshield from the operation of the windshield wipers, and on the side ones - from lifting and lowering.

The X-Ray engine compartment seals, even though they are installed even in the front part, do not cope with their task of protecting the engine from dust from above. The reason for this is an unsuccessful cross-section profile and insufficiently elastic manufacturing material.

Trunk

The volume of the standard trunk of the Lada XRay is 361 liters - a decent figure, but still not enough for a crossover. In addition, there are other complaints about the trunk.

The body opening for the trunk lid is small and, moreover, due to the design of the rear lights, it is narrowed in width in the upper half. This imposes restrictions when loading oversized luggage.

The dimensions of the trunk lid glass do not provide sufficient visibility from the rear panorama from the cabin, so the manufacturer equipped the car with a parking sensor system and a rear view camera.

The floor in the luggage compartment is two-layer, the top layer is a removable false floor with eyelets at the corners for securing luggage. The strength of the raised floor is not designed for the transportation of heavy objects - under the influence of a load concentrated on a small area, it bends, and the close arrangement of the fastening eyes creates inconvenience when tying slings to them.

Under the raised floor there is a second bottom covered with a sheet of cardboard with a fleecy fabric trim. The distance between the trunk floors is 10-12 cm over its entire area, and the purpose of this space is uncertain. In addition, the material of the second floor is not waterproof.

pros

  1. The steering wheel is smooth and precise, driving the car is a pleasure. The gearbox was a bit difficult at first. The thing is that I learned to drive in a different car. But this did not create any big difficulties; a couple of days were enough to get used to the new manual transmission.
  2. I haven’t found any crickets yet, I haven’t heard any creaks. Calm and quiet;
  3. It is better to immediately purchase a lid with a lock for the neck of the tank, since the original one does not close;
  4. Excellent parking sensors, equipped with a high-quality rear view camera;
  5. The entire multimedia system works efficiently and without failures. Navigation is fine. Clear sound from the speakers makes it very pleasant to listen to your favorite music. Regarding the power of the audio system, it is of an average level. Although I don’t need anything else, if I want to listen to music loudly and dance, I’ll go to a nightclub;
  6. I think the chairs are comfortable, but my wife complains about insufficient lateral and back support. I didn’t notice any particular shortcomings;
  7. The interior is large, roomy and comfortable, especially for the driver and front passenger, but the rear one will be a little less comfortable (this is purely my opinion);
  8. I was pleased with the clearance of the Lada X Ray, it is 195 cm “I sit high, I look far away”;
  9. The engine runs almost silently, and after warming up it’s not audible at all. A high level of noise insulation allows you to clearly hear your interlocutor without raising your voice;
  10. I was pleased with the rain sensor, it works on time and clearly. The windshield wipers do not stick together, they move smoothly on the glass;
  11. The steering wheel design is comfortable, not too thin and not too thick, just right;
  12. The handles are comfortable and designed for a natural grip;
  13. Oak plastic looks quite organic, which is good news;
  14. The engine is powerful, and thanks to the short gearbox it has excellent acceleration;
  15. On uneven roads, a high-quality suspension helps a lot, thanks to which maximum smoothness of movement is ensured;
  16. Standard automatic door locking while driving;
  17. Plenty of space for transporting personal belongings, a spacious glove compartment, a niche under the passenger seat, plus a small trunk with a shelf;
  18. The presence of a recoil system makes it possible to comfortably climb any hill.

Optics

A serious drawback of equipping the Lada XRay with optics is the lensless block headlights, although they are already divided into low and high beam.

The fog lights do not have a beveled reflector that allows illumination of the roadside, and are installed too deep in the bumper sockets - dirt and snow from the road accumulate in these sockets along the way, and weak fog lamps (not LED) aggravate the poor lighting situation.

Attempts to independently adjust these headlights do not improve the situation.

The red fog lamp, installed in the center of the lower part of the rear bumper, due to the aerodynamic features of the Lada X-Ray, is covered in a layer of snow from the road in winter, and the engine exhaust only aggravates the situation.

Salon

The interior of the Lada X-Ray is a bit cramped for a crossover, especially in the rear. The comfortable seats are decorated with a high-quality, non-staining and pleasant-to-touch fabric, but even moving the front seats not completely back makes it uncomfortable for the passengers sitting behind them.

Moreover, there is no light above the rear passengers, and there is nowhere for them to put drinks - there is only one cup holder for 3 seats, and the pockets in the backs of the front seats are of small capacity.

Plastic interior trim - door cards, front panel look attractive, but are very hard to the touch and noisy on contact.

The upholstery material is low-quality carpet, not dense enough, and rubber mats for this model are not cheap - 3 thousand rubles.

In the first batches of Lada XRay that came off the AvtoVAZ assembly line, the backlighting of the instruments on the control panel was turned on manually; after modification by the manufacturer, the instruments are constantly illuminated, but there is still no indication of the coolant temperature.

There is no reach adjustment for the steering wheel, only height adjustment.

The location of the window lifters is unfortunate - you have to use them with your hand bent backwards.

The width of the A-pillar trim covers impairs visibility from the driver's seat; hidden areas could be smaller.

The noise insulation of the wheel arches leaves much to be desired - every pebble can be heard from under the wheel.

The display size of the standard head unit is large, but its information content is low - at a time, not counting the amount of fuel in the tank, only one parameter is displayed.

I have owned this car from April 2021 to this day. No breakdowns. So there is no need to criticize this car.

After much thought, my wife and I finally decided to change our Kia Venga car, we were looking for a car both for the city and for a long trip. We saw an advertisement for Lada X-Ray. Passed the drive test. We liked the car. Since the Kia Venga had a machine gun, I decided to take X-Ray with a robot. The car was purchased on March 19, 2021. Released February 2021. On March 31st we went on vacation to Kislovodsk. The car behaved perfectly. Handles the road well. The 1.8 engine is powerful enough to overtake or accelerate when necessary. The robot works well. True, the first few days I had to get used to the robot. But we worked together, now there are no problems. We drove more than 3800 km. I'm pleased with the gas mileage. The average consumption per trip was 7.6 liters. I checked the oil after arriving in Moscow, I think about 500 grams were used. Other fluids are normal. Although the oil is almost normal. I hope that after a full run-in, which is, as the manufacturers recommend, 4000 km, the consumption will be even less. Nothing creaks or rattles anywhere. Venga creaked like a cricket. Comfortable seats. Yes, the window lift buttons are located a little inconveniently, but you quickly get used to it. Beautiful design. In general, we're happy with the car so far. Let's see what will happen next. I'll write later if there's anything new.

I’d like to start right away with the cars I’ve owned before.

So that I have an understanding of what I compare XRAY with.

  • Daewoo Nexia 1999 3.5 years
  • Ford Fusion 2006 3 years
  • Daewoo Gentra 2013 2.5 years.

I chose X-RAY because I liked it :)

A little about the Tyumen LADA car showroom on the street. Chekistov, special thanks to the manager Igor, the man knows his business, explained everything competently and efficiently conducted the entire transaction process, which, thanks to him and the rest of the employee, did not last very long.

Body.

For me personally, the appearance of X-RAY is something new and fresh, it turned out to be quite individual, and it looks much more interesting in real life than in the photo. Iron, unlike Gentra, is thicker and cannot be pressed through with a finger. The build quality is on par with the Ford Fusion in terms of clearances. As for the paintwork, time will tell; on Gentra the paint started peeling off in the first six months, so I repainted the sills and fender arches again.

In general, I rate the quality of painting and assembly at 4+ out of 5. Appearance 5 out of 5 (Of course, a matter of taste).

Interior

Oak plastic is everywhere, but it looks quite good, I drove 350 km, so far nothing creaks or rattles, it’s easy to clean. Pleasant illumination of the instrument panel, the interior lamp shines brightly, there are diode lamps. High seating position, the seats seemed hard at first, but gradually began to take the shape of my 5th point, I specifically checked when sitting in the passenger seat, it seems more rigid. The seats in the cabin are slightly smaller in length than in the Gentra in width, and the fusion is unrivaled. The trunk is average, but quite roomy with the seats folded down. I fit comfortably behind me in the back seat; I’m 183 cm tall. But it will be a bit cramped for 3 adults. I didn’t like how the window lifts were placed, you need to bend your hand back, it doesn’t matter, it’s a matter of habit.

It was possible to make more additional drawers for small items, in the Daewoo everything was ok, later I will install an armrest.

I can’t say that the pedal assembly is tight, I’ve never caught my foot on two pedals at once, I don’t understand why they made so much noise against this background.

The radio is simple, convenient, I figured everything out right away, I really liked the bluetooth function, once it connected the rest automatically, it’s convenient to talk on the phone and listen to music from it. By the way, the speakers don't come out when you're doing it loud, but they play well.

Kander works well, the stove is not noisy. In heavy rain you can't cope with fogging without a cander.

The gearbox works smoothly, unlike the Gentra, it does not crunch or whistle. I noticed one interesting thing: when you engage first and reverse gears, the speed rises on its own, you don’t have to gas it, the car will roll by itself.

Cool thing, help when starting uphill, girls will really like it :)

The engine is quite playful despite the running-in, much faster than the Gentra and quieter than the Fusion.

In terms of noise in the cabin, the X-ray is the quietest of all my former cars.

I really like that the engine is chain driven.

Everything is neat under the hood, I've already driven through puddles and mud, it's clean under the hood!!! It was very rough in Gentra.

Nothing interferes with the view in the car, the pillars in the Ford were too thick, and the struts in the Gentra are a bit low.

The suspension is somewhere between fusion and Gentra, moderately elastic, but in the pits at a decent speed the sound is not very pleasant. On Gentra it was quieter, but too sluggish had a bad effect on handling. The ground clearance on the X-ray is generally a gift; it lacks all-wheel drive.

On the highway it behaves predictably, it doesn’t get blown away by a side wind, although I thought it would be like a fusion car, the wind was very noticeable. Yes, and for those who are thinking of buying a crossover with front-wheel drive, Xray is a good alternative with a decent price tag,

In general, there are only positive emotions from the car so far. I hope that the quality will not let you down. Because the car is really pleasing to the eye, it’s a pleasure to drive in, it’s a pleasure to drive, and you want it to last as long as possible.

The review, of course, turned out to be very sweet, but at this stage of its life this car is still the best, followed by Ford. I hope that in addition to the review I will not have to change my opinion about Xray.

I drove a right-hand drive Aduha in body 12, and recently my son’s Logan in a new body.

It’s difficult to find a set like this, I found it in Voronezh. The machine itself costs 798,900 plus 12t r per color. They gave me 25 thousand rubles of free extras and I got more extras that I wanted, and in the end I paid 850 thousand rubles.

From the additional stages I took radiator grilles (a necessary and beautiful thing), steel engine armor, gas struts on the hood, body treatment with liquid rubber, fleecy mats, an armrest, tinting (in addition to the standard one) of the rear hemisphere, and roof rails. Expensive.

I’ll tell everyone who is interested right away, guys, that there is no standard armrest in the car at all and there won’t be anything standard and I chose a collective farm, but at least a decent one. As a result, the 3500 is made of eco-leather, it is not secured by anything but it stands firmly, it does not interfere with the handbrake, it interferes with fastening, but it is the best of all that I have seen.

I compared it with the Vesta, it’s a good machine, but I don’t just need one.

The robot works fine, a lot depends on the driving style. If you drive jerkily, the robot will be pushed. If you drive steadily like I do, then there is no big difference with a hydromechanical automatic.

I drove from Voronezh to Belgorod, through spring potholes here and there, and the impressions from the car were the most pleasant. A foreign car and a foreign car. Pretty. Modern.

By the way, the x-rey inscription under the radio was removed between the buttons.

For the last 10 years I have driven exclusively Volvos. True, lately I’ve actually had to ride minibuses because the money from the S80 was invested in business.

It was time to buy a car and then I came across an XRAY advertisement. I came to the car dealership, saw this miracle, took a test drive and couldn’t believe what this miracle was capable of, how much our auto industry had changed and began to produce at least something worthwhile.

Now I am the owner of a LADA XRAY TOP Prestige 1.8 AMT. The car was purchased on September 14, 2021 at the Saturn car dealership (Chelyabinsk, Ufimsky tract, 3).

Here are the first kilometers around the city on the brand new XRAY.

There aren’t very many of these cars in the city yet; I’ve seen a couple of them over the years. This is what surprises me: I understand that if I were driving a cool new Lamborghini and everyone would be surprised, but I’m driving an ordinary LADA of our production. Many people are watching and studying. Several times they honked at traffic lights, opened the windows, asked to open them in response, and asked about the characteristics and cost. When the car is parked, people walk past it, turning their heads; once, in the parking lot near the children's center, where I was picking up my daughter, a whole round dance gathered.

Apparently everyone is attracted by the LADA inscription on the back and people don’t believe that this is an example of the domestic automobile industry. I asked a couple of people who were driving with me in the car: “Well, how do you like the car of our automobile industry?” To which I received a response of surprise: “Come on! Is this Lada? People sitting inside a car, not knowing about its model before getting into it, cannot believe it. I have already been offered to peel off this large inscription, but if it is removed, then XRAY will become an ordinary imported car and will not arouse anyone’s interest. So I left.

Now, if I bought some Mitsubishi, BMW or Lexus, it is unlikely that my car would arouse such interest. XRAY is of interest even to people who drive decent brands and models of cars.

These emotions are not worth any money, much less 775 thousand. We can say that the lost value after leaving the salon was already returned to me as a moral reward (I don’t know what term to choose since we have the concept of “moral damage”, but here it’s the other way around).

The car makes me and those around me happy. I don't regret the purchase at all.

To make it easier to understand, I will briefly describe what cars I owned. Started on the parent troika. Then there were a lot of different things, including an UAZ. Latest; Ford Sea Max (4 year old) Lada Kalina 2 Lux '13, bought new.

I took the car based on the following; new, not naked, not a sedan, no worse than Kalina 2. First impressions, and for obvious reasons they cannot be extensive and detailed. According to the reviews I read online, the car doesn’t handle 106, it’s complete nonsense. Guys, the car pulls with a bang, considering that the weight of the car has not yet been broken in. The dynamics are not crazy, but they are very good. The noise is also excellent. Even better than some Europeans.

The plastic is hard but pleasant to look at. The fit is excellent. There is no lumbar support, but it is not needed, since the shape of the seat already contributes to a comfortable fit. The seats were made well. Although there is not enough lateral support. His beautiful ass is slightly lacking in smoothness; it dances along a bad road at speed. As the mileage and emotions (hopefully positive) increase, I will add more. First opinion, 5 out of 5. Naturally in this class and price category. I advise those who have doubts. Good luck to all!!!

I've been using this model for 2 weeks. After the new RAV-4, it’s difficult to talk about differences. But I managed to go to the dacha in the winter. On the highway there were no complaints. It goes smoothly - it swallows small potholes as if they didn’t exist. Starts great in cold weather. The only difference is the acceleration. Yes, the robot is not a CVT. But I think that for my age, not a racer, it’s a normal option. At first I was afraid the plastic would rattle in the cold, but no. Not a single cricket.

Advantages of Lada XRAY

The anti-shumka is made even better than in the RAV-4. You can skid with the robot and it doesn’t go badly in rough snow.

Disadvantages of Lada XRAY

The shortcomings will come out - I’ll add them. Although the car is still in the process of formation.

Engine

Equipping the Lada X Ray with HR16DE engines (1.6 l, 110 hp), despite its reliability and efficiency, has been discontinued since June 2021. The Nissan engine is installed only in the “XRay” anniversary series modification, limited in quantity; all other cars are equipped with domestic VAZ-21129 and VAZ-21179 engines. Let's look at the disadvantages inherent in both of these internal combustion engines.

The dense layout of the space under the hood, due to the irrational arrangement of the air ducts, makes it difficult to access the engine for routine maintenance, especially keeping it clean, as discussed in the “body” section.

The service life of both engines is 200 thousand km, which is not enough for a crossover. The gas distribution mechanism (GRM) drive is a belt drive, which is significantly inferior in reliability to a chain drive.

It is recommended to replace the timing belt after 180 thousand kilometers, while on the VAZ-21179 this operation is complicated - there are no usual marks on the pulleys, so the camshafts must be removed, and they are secured with a special tool.

If the timing belt breaks, the standard pistons of both engines, due to their configuration, bend the valves, and replacing the pistons with tuning ones deprives the car of warranty service.

The VAZ-21129 and VAZ-21179 engines are quite noisy, and only additional layers of sound insulation in the engine compartment reduce the noise level in the cabin.

Convenience and safety rating

Of course, the main purpose of the test drive of the Lada X-Ray by the magazine “Behind the Wheel” was to check the convenience and safety of this model. Both points raised virtually no questions. All seat belts and both integral airbags (driver and front passenger) are present and functioning properly (only the airbag shutoff mechanism was tested when the front passenger is not present).

In terms of convenience, the result is absolutely the same. All the necessary manipulators for controlling the car’s electronics (electric side mirrors, power windows, audio system, radio, climate control, on-board computer) are located in places convenient for the driver and passengers, and you don’t need to be distracted from driving to find them. The driver's seat is easily adjustable in height and tilt; The steering column can also be adjusted, although the adjustment mechanism is unusual to use.

The model’s trunk raised questions – its volume is only 310 liters. It may not be enough for a large family, but when traveling as a couple, the folding rear bench seats can easily increase the cargo volume to 1,200 liters.

Some problems also arose with the vehicle's built-in electronic motion control systems. In some situations, they do not work quite correctly (the traction control system dampens engine speed even when going uphill, which is fraught, and the exchange rate stability system is oversensitive). Considering the impossibility of manually turning them off or manually setting convenient parameters, you will have to come to terms with this - or wait for AvtoVAZ to correct these shortcomings.

Overall, the car was considered very good, even taking into account how much it costs. It is worth noting that both power units considered are already available in the “Comfort” configuration - a buyer who wants to save money will not have to put up with a too weak VAZ-21129 engine. It should be recalled that the basic configuration of the model costs 589 thousand rubles, and to purchase the minimum versions with a 1.6-liter Japanese and 1.8-liter VAZ engine, you will have to overpay only 39 and 64 thousand rubles, respectively.

Transmission

The Lada XRay is equipped with two transmission options: mechanical and 5-band robotic transmission type AMT of the VAZ-21827 series.

There are no objective complaints about the manual transmission, but there are complaints about the “robot”:

  • according to the operating rules, a robotic automatic transmission does not need to be warmed up, but in practice, driving without warming up is accompanied by jerks;
  • when standing in a traffic jam for a long time, you need to switch to “neutral”;
  • the VAZ-21179 engine in combination with this transmission ensures acceleration of the car to 100 km/h in at least 10.2 seconds;
  • quick overtaking on the highway is only possible when the gearbox is switched to manual mode.

Engine Lada X Ray

Speaking of engines, it’s worth mentioning right away that the engineers took full care to provide a choice. So, the machine can be equipped with the following engines:

  • VAZ-21129 with a volume of 1.6;
  • HR16DE with a volume of 1.6;
  • VAZ -21179 with a volume of 1.8.

All engines love to “eat” 95 gasoline, but the Renault-Nissan HR16DE will not refuse 92 gasoline.

Statistics based on long-term observations tell us that the VAZ-21129 has the longest life expectancy. Unfortunately, its slight advantage does not mean that it is not susceptible to common “diseases” of X Ray engines, which include:

Gas pedal drops, followed by inability to reduce speed

This problem, as paradoxical as it may sound, is caused by the inability to operate correctly at low temperatures. Residents of the northern regions claim that when the temperature drops to -20 degrees, the pedal becomes inhibited and does not allow the speed to decrease. The treatment is to replace the original electronic pedal contact, as it cannot withstand severe frosts.

The engine is adjusting

VAZ -21179 distinguished itself here. Owners note unstable operation in frosty weather, but as soon as operating temperature is reached, the symptom goes away. There is no treatment as such - this point, rather, relates to the characteristics of the engine model and does not have obvious dire consequences.

Leaking seals (crankshaft, camshaft)

All engines in the series have a decent oil appetite.
