Lada XRAY Cross: a hybrid of the B0 platform and Vesta
If you think that XRAY Cross is just a raised XRAY, then you are very mistaken. In fact, this is a very interesting fruit of original Tolyatti engineering, which combines parts of the B0 and Vesta platforms.
The development of the French platform by AvtoVAZ has been going on for ten years. After purchasing a license from Renault in the fall of 2008, Largus first appeared under the Lada brand, which is essentially no different from the original Logan station wagon. Then in Togliatti they made XRAY, which was already significantly different from the original Sandero Stepway hatchback in design, interior, and power units, but still inherited the ordinary driving character and all the birthmarks of the B0 chassis, including unclear reactive communication and high level vibrations on the steering wheel.
And now the XRAY Cross is coming out, the main technical innovation of which is a modified front suspension, where instead of Logan’s lower arms there are new L-shaped ones, essentially copied from Vesta’s suspension. The break-in shoulder is now negative, which should improve handling. In addition, the electro-hydraulic power steering has been replaced with an electric one, also following the example of Vesta. The steering column now has reach adjustment.
Vesta Cross also got rear disc brakes. This is the second case, after the Brazilian hatchback Renault Sandero RS, of using “discs” on production B0 cars - exactly what buyers of Logans, Captures and Dusters dream about. And higher-profile base tires - dimensions 215/50 R17 category M+S - gave a slight increase in ground clearance: from 195 to 215 mm.
And that's not it. Heated front seats have become three-stage, and its buttons have moved from the seat cushion to the center console. The rear sofa is also heated, but in addition, the angle of its backrest has also been changed (to a more vertical one), which made it possible to move the cushion 25 mm back, increasing legroom.
And finally, XRAY Cross became the first Lada with a selector washer that changes the operating modes of the stabilization system. There are four of these modes: normal, sports, winter, and sand. Plus the fifth position is to turn off “stabilization”.
Many of these innovations (for example, heating keys and a rear seat) will later appear on regular XRAY hatchbacks, but there is no information yet on how much they will change the price. As well as how much the XRAY Cross itself will cost. It will go on sale at the end of this year, and judging by the amount of modifications, the “cross” surcharge is unlikely to be less than in the case of West sedans and station wagons.
