The new generation Kalina is offered in station wagon and hatchback versions. Granta has only one body type - sedan. Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

For example, the sedan is equipped with a spacious luggage compartment of 480 liters. When opened, it does not let air inside the cabin, which creates comfortable conditions in winter. In the Kalina hatchback and station wagon there is no partition behind the rear seat; in addition, the trunk volume is 260 l and 361 l. But car enthusiasts prefer these particular body types, as they have more comfortable dimensions and a rear hinged door.

It is worth noting that the Grant’s body is made with an emphasis on aerodynamic qualities, the car has a spacious trunk, but when compared with the Kalina, it is significantly inferior to the latter. This is primarily due to the cost of the car, which has increased significantly over the past six months. Kalina is additionally equipped with such devices as hydraulic headlight adjustment, door switches and a torsion spring mechanism for opening the trunk. Moreover, both the first generation Kalina and the Lada Kalina 2 are equipped with these elements. There are no differences in warranty services; both models are serviced free of charge for 36 months or until reaching 50 thousand km.

Of course, the reduction in the cost of production of the Grant made it possible to significantly reduce the price of the car in comparison with the Kalina. Both cars have the same power and comfort, but the Granta has its minor drawbacks. Considering all the positive and negative aspects, buy a car that suits your personal requirements.

Body quality

After the release of the Grant, most owners began to measure the thickness of the body metal. It was discovered that the metal of the Granta body has become much thinner compared to the previous generation Kalina. AvtoVAZ engineers commented on this fact, noting the improvement of the alloy that is used to cast the body of the new model. According to them, new technologies have made it possible to equalize the body strength of the new model and the first Kalina model. But test drive results indicate the opposite.

The thin metal of the body is quite easy to bend; there is no modernization in the alloy. It is clear that the plant tried to save resources on the production of this model. The body of the new Kalina model is cast from the same metal that was used for the previous generation; there is no decrease in density.

Under the hood of Grants

Grant's lock mechanism is also not of high quality. At first, the doors close quite simply, but the locks wear out quickly, as they are made of cheap plastic. The 2nd generation Kalina has no problems in this regard, since it has a silicone locking mechanism installed.

Maximum speed and ground clearance

171 kilometers per hour is the maximum speed that Kalina 2 is capable of developing. This is subject to a luxury configuration with a 106-horsepower unit. The standard model accelerates to only 168 kilometers per hour, which does not satisfy all drivers. As for ground clearance, both Lada Kalina and Granta Liftback have the same figures - 160 mm.

The exception is Kalina Cross, which is designed for off-road driving and has a ground clearance of 183 mm. For farmers and residents of the outback, where the roads leave much to be desired, the question “Which is better Kalina Cross or Granta Liftback?” is clearly decided in favor of the first.

Comparative characteristics

From the above we can draw the following conclusion:

  • Granta is cheaper than Kalina;
  • Grant has a modern platform, better handling;
  • to the detriment of safety and quality, Grant simplified the headlight unit and other body parts, but this lowered the price of the car;
  • Grant has a higher quality paintwork. Less susceptible to corrosion, retains natural color longer.
  • Compared to Kalina, Grant has better sound insulation, which allows you to talk in the car even at high speed.

It would be worth considering some parameters in more detail and comparing them.

  1. Appearance of cars. Upon a superficial examination of the new product, it may seem that the Granta is not like other Russian cars. Upon closer inspection, it is noticeable that the side doors are the same as those of the Lada Kalina. And the sedan bodies of both models are generally not much different. The Granta can only be recognized by its large size and a different shape of the bumper and headlights.
  2. Luggage compartment. When it comes to trunk space, the Lada Kalina remains on the bench. Due to the fact that Granta's body is longer than that of Kalina, its trunk is much larger. It’s just that the appearance of the trunk is “lame”, and it doesn’t close the first time. But the size of the trunk is louder than its shortcomings, and this is good news.
  3. Salon overview. Kalina users often received complaints about the unbearable creaking of the panels, a large number of gaps and backlashes. In the new Lada Granta, these shortcomings have been corrected, and the interior makes almost no unnecessary unpleasant sounds. But regarding the plastic in the car, there is a question: is it cheap? Despite this, the interior of the Lada Granta also has its advantages:
  • beautiful and pleasant instrument panel;
  • cup holders installed;
  • the glove compartment has been enlarged;
  • There were no problems with the heater operation.
  1. Steering rack. A significant advantage of the Grant over the Kalina is the shortened steering rack. This solution made it easier to drive the new car. But there was no room in the vehicle for an ashtray, but all was not lost.
  2. Power unit.
    The engines in both cars are almost the same, but the Granta has some advantages. With the same number of valves per cylinder, the Kalina engine is capable of developing a power of 82 horsepower, and in the Grant - 90. Such indicators can be explained by the fact that the latter has a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. The Granta's power unit works faster, unlike the Kalina, and there is no unnecessary noise.
  3. Safety system. It is worth noting that the Grant has two airbags, which cannot be said about the Kalina, and this is a good indicator, considering the new product as a budget car.
