Lada Granta automatic transmission: changing the oil in an automatic transmission
Let's start with the fact that the automatic transmission on the Grant conventionally belongs to the category of so-called “maintenance-free” gearboxes.
In other words, as the manufacturer himself claims, the oil in the automatic transmission of the Lada Granta is filled for the entire service life of the car. It turns out that you only need to change the oil in the Lada Granta automatic transmission if the gearbox is being repaired. Otherwise, there is no need to change the oil during operation. Let us immediately note that in practice, the absence of the need to change the oil in the automatic transmission on Grant is more of a marketing ploy. The fact is that the warranty period for the automatic transmission expires, but the service life of the automatic transmission, provided it operates on old oil, is greatly reduced.
It should also be added that transmission fluid, although slower than motor oils, still inevitably loses its beneficial properties. Taking into account the fact that the Grant has a “classic” hydromechanical automatic transmission, the ATF oil in such a box gets very hot in the torque converter when transmitting torque.
You can also note temperature changes, wear products of the box itself, contaminating the liquid, etc. It turns out that if the owner is interested in increasing the service life of the machine, the oil in the automatic transmission of Grants and any other car needs to be changed.
ATF change timing
In order not to spend money on overhauling the automatic transmission, experienced car owners advise changing the oil in the gearbox after 65 thousand km of driving the vehicle.
Since negatively influencing processes occurring inside the machine, both due to the fault of the car owner and natural ones, contribute to the rapid production of lubricant.
Such negative processes include:
- an increase in the temperature in the box when slipping or driving off-road, as well as in countries with hot climates;
- cold and abrupt starts in winter;
- dirty filter device.
The oil in the Lada Xray automatic transmission ceases to perform the functions for which it was intended. Namely:
- protection of metal parts from wear;
- lubrication of machine components;
- automatic transmission cooling.
Attention! The Jatco JF414E automatic transmission is very picky about the quality of the lubricant. Therefore, cheap analogues will quickly disable it.
The manufacturer indicates that the lubricant must be changed after 80 thousand kilometers. Experienced car owners and mechanics advise motorists who have a car with this gearbox to replace it much earlier than this period. Therefore, the recommended complete replacement, taken from practice, is 50 - 60 thousand kilometers.

Partial replacement must be performed after the vehicle has driven thirty thousand kilometers. Beforehand, every 10 thousand kilometers, experts advise checking the lubricant in the automatic transmission and adding it if necessary.
What does the manufacturer recommend?
AvtoVAZ recommends using Genuine GM EJ-1 ATF oil, or filling in a high-quality analogue of Nissan ATF Matic-S. The reliability and high beneficial properties of both oils are confirmed by many years of research, as well as test results. Both oils have official approval from AvtoVAZ. We can say that the same oil that is used for the previous generation Nissan Micra is suitable for the Lada Granta automatic transmission.
Naturally, there are other options. For example, among cheaper analogues, Aisin ATF AFW+ would be a very good product.
How to completely renew the lubricant
To completely change the oil, the car owner must:
- Repeat the steps described in the previous block “Draining old fluid”.
- You will only need to fill in half a liter of fresh lubricant.
- Then disconnect the return hose and extend it. Place one end in a large basin or stick it into a five-liter bottle with the other and attach it back to the return fitting.
- Ask your partner to start the engine. Now you need to watch the oil pouring into a basin or bottle.
- When it changes color to a lighter color, ask your partner to turn off the engine.
- Now you need to repeat all the steps that were described in the instructions for a partial oil change. That is, the car owner will need to remove the pan and clean it, replace the old filter device with a new one. Install everything back. The main thing is not to forget to apply sealant in the place where the pan gasket is connected to the bottom of the automatic transmission.
- Fresh lubricant must be added in small portions - 1 liter each.
- Start the engine, press the brake pedal, move the gear shifter through all positions. Keep the engine running and check the level.
- In total, a full shift should take five liters of lubricant.

Now the Lada Granta car owner will be able to drive another sixty thousand kilometers without maintenance.
What kind of oil is in the Lada Granta automatic transmission?
According to the manufacturer, the fluid in the Lada Granta automatic transmission does not require replacement and is designed for the entire service life of the automatic transmission.
But we are adults and we understand that no liquid can retain its properties for a long time. And if you add to this constant loads in the form of towing a trailer, sudden acceleration, etc., then the oil service life is sharply reduced. Therefore, changing the oil in the automatic transmission will certainly not be superfluous. The optimal oil change interval for the Lada Granta automatic transmission is 100,000 km.
Features of Lada Granta with automatic transmission
The time-tested Jatco unit, used on Japanese vehicles since 1989, was taken as the basis for the new box. The new transmission has become much more efficient, easier to use, more compact and lighter. All JF414E for Lada are produced in the land of the rising sun in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The main characteristics of this automatic transmission are contained in the name:
J is the first letter of the manufacturer (Jatco). F – front-wheel drive. 4 - number of steps. 14 – development numbering. E – switching type (electronic).
The Japanese automatic transmission has overheating protection, which is activated at temperatures above 114°C. In addition, the box is equipped with an electronic control unit connected to a similar engine unit that responds to incoming signals.
Despite the reliability of the box and additional protective functions, the Grants automatic transmission requires regular maintenance, namely monitoring the condition and volume of lubricant, and replacing it if necessary.
Preparing for partial or complete replacement
Open the hood and disconnect the battery (key “10”, terminal “minus”). Next, remove the filter housing:
- We disconnect the mass air flow sensor connector (oval), as well as the adsorber valve connector (small plastic). We also disconnect the power cable tie from the case;
Two connectors and one tie
- The corrugation and the filter must be separated: loosen the clamp, remove the corrugation;
The corrugation is pulled from the socket on the body
- The filter housing must be removed from the supports - start with the front support located closer to the center;
- The supply pipe is disconnected from the housing. Then the box is removed, and it will need to be mounted before starting the engine.
Don't forget about the pipe
Now that there are no unnecessary parts, changing the oil in the Lada Granta automatic transmission can be done quickly.
To operate you will need the following set of spare parts:
- Automatic transmission oil. In this matter, everyone chooses based on their own considerations; many use Nissan. You need to take extra oil, you will need at least 5-8 liters;
- Automatic transmission pan gasket (code 31397 3MX0A);
- Copper washer (code 1102601M02);
- Automatic transmission filter (code 31728 3MX0A). It is advisable to change it, although many people just get by by washing it, and some don’t touch it at all, it all depends on the mileage.
From the tool you need to have:
- Container for draining old oil;
- Watering can and several pieces of hose;
- Lots of rags that don't leave lint;
- Key to “19”, “10” and hexagon to “5”;
- Inspection pit or lift.

Nuances of choosing oil
Every Lada Granta owner will sooner or later have to face the need to change the automatic transmission oil. This is especially true for Russian motorists who operate their cars, to put it mildly, not in favorable climatic conditions. Taking into account severe weather conditions, as well as the specific quality of the road surface in our country, the car is constantly exposed to enormous loads, and at the same time the gearbox is also subject to overloads. In this regard, an urgent oil change or an unscheduled fluid change may be required. The frequency of replacement is ambiguous and depends on many weather factors. Thus, the automatic transmission oil change schedule for Lada Granta averages 20-30 thousand km. Let us immediately note that this is the opinion of experienced motorists who have been using the Granta for quite a long time. The fact is that the manufacturer himself does not recommend changing the oil, or advises changing it after 100 thousand kilometers, which is equivalent to the entire operation of the car for one owner. After all, often after reaching this mileage, the first owner sells the car. But we must admit that the need to change the oil in the automatic transmission will be required much earlier than this date.
Transmission Lubricants
Now let’s figure out which oil is more suitable for the Lada Granta box than others. The performance of the car depends on it to the same extent as on the engine. To maintain operational functions, certain rules must be followed.
- Check the lubricant level in a timely manner. The frequency for cars with manual transmission is every 15 thousand mileage, for cars with automatic transmission – every 5 thousand. Sometimes there is a need for intermediate checks: if oil leaks are found on the crankcase.
- If the oil level drops, top up to normal.
- After traveling 70-75 thousand km or after 5 years of low-intensity use of a car with an automatic transmission, the lubricant must be replaced. If the Lada Granta is equipped with mechanics, the first change is carried out after 2 thousand kilometers, the subsequent ones - every 10-15 thousand kilometers traveled or annually.
General advice for everyone
- An automatic transmission is more sensitive to dust than any manual transmission. This must be remembered even when changing the oil in the automatic transmission of Lada Grants. All funnels and tubes must be perfectly clean.
- There is no need to increase the temperature of the box too much. The optimum is 45 degrees, but in general, if we are talking about an “automatic”, you can replace it with a “cold” one. But for greater efficiency, the box is “heated”, and then the “new” oil must also be heated.
- When measuring the volume of liquid being drained, take into account the temperature - heated liquid expands.
How to change transmission fluid yourself?
To replace ATF in a Lada Granta automatic transmission, you will need a standard set of tools, about 5 liters of oil, a funnel, a hose with the diameter of the hole for the dipstick and a container for draining the waste. The work is carried out on a lift or inspection pit.
Before changing the oil in the automatic transmission, remove the air filter or, without disconnecting the sensors, disconnect the air duct and move it to the side.
Remove the engine splash guard and place a waste container under the drain plug. Unscrew the plug and about a liter of dirty liquid will drain out.
Pour approximately the same amount of oil into the dipstick hole using a funnel with an extension hose.
Disconnect the oil return hose from the automatic transmission, extend it with any suitable pipe and lower it into a container with waste.
Start the engine with the gearbox selector in neutral position. Monitor the color of the liquid flowing into the container. As soon as it starts to lighten, turn off the engine and add exactly as much as you drained.
Unscrew the drain plug again - about 200 g of oil will drain out.
Remove the automatic transmission pan using a 10mm head. Pour out the old fluid from it, clean the magnets, rinse thoroughly and wipe the pan dry.
Unscrew the transmission filter. Thoroughly clean the mesh and hydraulic unit, then install the element in place.
Return the pan to its original position and fill in the same amount of fresh oil as was drained in total. As a rule, this is about 3-3.5 liters.
Start the engine, warm it up and, pressing the brake, move the automatic transmission selector to each position.
Check the fluid level as indicated above. If necessary, add the missing amount. Take a test drive and check the oil level with the engine running.
Conclusion
Having considered the suitable options, you can decide on the best oil for the Lada Granta automatic transmission. It is better to use a quality product, which does not have to be expensive and original. This can be seen judging by the presence on the market of quite good analogues from the companies Mobil, Castrol, ZIC, ExxonMobil, Lukoil, etc.

Why change the oil yourself?
Perhaps someone will ask: “Why change the oil yourself, if now most sellers offer their customers a free oil change?”
There are two reasons for this:
- Free replacement. Forget about the word "FREE" - it's advertising. In the world of commerce, nothing is done for free. When I first changed the oil “free” on my Grant, I had to buy the oil itself for 1,610 rubles. and an oil filter for 290 rubles, a total of 1900 rubles. Only when purchasing oil and filter at the same time, you could use the “free” replacement service. When the time came for the next oil change, I decided to find out the price of MAGNUM ULTRATEC 5W-40 in the spare parts store of the official LADA dealer. Imagine my surprise when I saw the price tag of 1,320 rubles on the canister. An oil filter in the same store cost 280 rubles, a total of 1600 rubles. Naturally, the store did not offer any “free” replacement. We conclude: “free oil change” is already included in the cost of oil. Want to save 300 rubles? – change the oil yourself. By the way, I recently came across a site on the Internet where MAGNUM ULTRATEC 5W-40 is being sold for 1,032 rubles. (4l). Then add the savings :)).
- Full control of the replacement process. When you change the oil yourself, you control the entire process. It is possible to evaluate the condition of the drained oil, its viscosity, and transparency. Even a simple visual inspection will help you draw preliminary conclusions about the quality of used oil. “Workouts” may be different (depending on the quality of the oil and operating conditions). Some are black, like shoe polish, and even with a “pearl” tint, indicating the presence of small metal shavings in the used oil. Such development is a very bad signal, indicating rapid engine wear. Another point that you can control when replacing it yourself is the force with which the oil filter is screwed in. After the “free” replacement, I barely unscrewed the oil filter on my Grant, and when I unscrewed it, there was a large dent on it, which formed at the moment of “tightening” the filter. In short, they tightened the filter like bolts on a wheel. What if the thread was torn off or some other problem? In general, when you change it yourself, it’s much calmer.
Procedure for changing engine oil
Below I described the procedure for changing engine oil in the Lada Granta engine, which I followed myself. Whether you follow it or not is up to you.
Warming up the engine
I would like to note that the oil change is carried out when the engine is warm. Hot oil is more liquid and flows easily from the engine walls and oil passages. If the oil is cold, then a significant part of it will remain in the engine. Therefore, be sure to warm up the engine before replacing.
Unscrew the oil filler cap
The first thing I did was unscrew the oil filler cap to allow free air flow when draining the oil.
Why unscrew the cap? If this is not done, then when draining the used oil, a vacuum of air will be created in the engine, preventing complete draining. Why does this happen? The fact is that in modern engines there is no direct communication between the crankcase and the atmosphere.
The modern crankcase ventilation system is a separate topic, I will not go into it, I will only say that it is designed to reduce the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere. You've probably heard about the environmental class of a car: Euro-3, Euro-4, Euro-5. I think everyone knows about them. So, a modern crankcase ventilation system is part of the environmental standard.
By the way, the Lada Granta (in my case, 2021) meets the Euro-5 environmental standard. What am I talking about? Moreover, it is better to unscrew the oil filler cap. Of course, the oil will drain with the cap screwed on, but with the cap unscrewed it will drain a little faster... In general, I unscrewed the cap, and you do as you see fit... Moreover, you still have to unscrew the cap to fill the oil, whether you do it earlier or later...
Just in case, I covered the neck hole with a clean rag so that no dirt got in there..... Let's move on.
Drain the used oil
To drain the oil from the engine, just unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the crankcase with a 17 key and place a container where the used oil will be drained. If your car has a metal engine protection (as in the image), then pay attention to the oval plug.
Removing it will give you access to the drain plug. There is no need to remove the protection itself.
So, we place the container under the oil and use a 17 key to unscrew the plug. Having slightly loosened the plug with a key, you can then unscrew it by hand. Just be careful. Stand back a little when you remove the plug to prevent hot oil from splashing on you.
Changing the oil filter
After unscrewing the plug, let the oil drain into the container. While the oil is draining, you can unscrew the oil filter and replace it with a new one.
To unscrew the oil filter, I used a chain-shaped tool with a ratchet head.
Car dealerships sell several different types of tools for unscrewing filters, but I chose the “chain” option because it seemed more reliable and versatile to me.
Before installing a new oil filter, do not forget to generously lubricate the rubber O-ring with oil - this will make tightening the filter much easier.
If this is not done, the rubber ring, in contact with the metal surface, will begin to “slow down” the process of tightening the filter. You will try to tighten it, but it will come back, as if on a spring.
Useful tips from experienced car owners
When cleaning and wiping internal parts, it is best to use lint-free fabrics and materials. This is especially true for the dipstick, the inner surface of the pan, and oil filter elements. Unnoticeable tiny fluff can subsequently accumulate in the throttle openings of the solenoid valves and cause malfunctions in the electronic control system of the automatic transmission.
The oil filter cover of the Jatco JF 414E automatic transmission is fixed with bolts of different lengths. When unscrewing them, it is recommended to mark the location of each fastener with a felt-tip pen or marker so that there is no confusion during subsequent installation of the unit.
Complete replacement
The lubricant in the automatic transmission on Grant can be changed in full. At the bottom of the crankcase there is a plug 2. Below it there is a tube 3, which can be unscrewed using a key set to “6”.
- Unscrew the plug. You will drain approximately 250 ml of liquid. Place the prepared container, unscrew the tube and drain the remaining oil.
- Screw on the tube 3.
- Pour 5 liters of oil through the hole in the dipstick. Excess liquid will come out through the hole at the bottom.
- Reinstall the air filter and dipstick. Start the engine.
- Over time, the excess will drain off.
- After the process is completed, tighten plug 2.
Instructions for changing the oil on a Grant with an 8 and 16 cl engine
So, unscrew the oil filler cap. Next, loosen the drain plug on the pan.
We place a container under it to drain the old oil. Drain it until the oil begins to drip in small drops.
Next, we place the container under the oil filter and use pullers to unscrew it. For ease of replacement, we recommend disconnecting the crankshaft sensor block so as not to accidentally damage it with the puller.
If you don't have a puller at hand, you can carefully pierce the oil filter with a screwdriver and unscrew it, using the screwdriver as a lever.
After we have completely drained the old oil and unscrewed the filter, take a new filter and pour new oil into it approximately halfway, and also lubricate the rubber sealing ring with oil. We wrap the filter.
If you change the type of oil or fill in oil from another company, you must flush the engine with special flushing oil.
Pour new oil through the neck. With a manual transmission 3.2 liters with an automatic transmission 4.4 liters.
Let's wait a few seconds and start the engine. The oil level indicator lamp on the panel will light up. After a minute the lamp will go out. This completes the replacement process. You just need to check the level and top up if necessary.
Why might oil leak?
Transmission malfunctions are accompanied by characteristic sounds, which determine the area of the breakdown. In addition, there are other factors that are a signal for repair of the unit.
If there is noise in the gearbox, the bearings or gears are most likely worn out. The problem can be corrected by replacing parts. The problem may arise due to a lack of the required amount of lubricant. In this case, it is necessary to add fluid to the automatic transmission urgently.
An automatic transmission oil change on a Grant may be required as a result of a leak being detected. Before you begin the filling procedure, it is necessary to determine the cause of the oil leak. Characteristic spots on a problem area or puddles of liquid on the asphalt will indicate a damaged unit.
The most common cause of oil leakage on LADA GRANTA is:
Partial replacement
Everything discussed below can be done at your own peril and risk. If there is an overflow or rubbish gets into the box, you only have yourself to blame. In total, we will replace 2-3 liters of fluid (the total volume is 5.1 liters):
Oil pumping system
Fill with fresh transmission fluid
Don't forget to return the dipstick to its rightful place. Reassemble the remaining components.
After all the steps, the old oil in the automatic transmission will be mixed with the new one. But this process will end after 100-200 km. The “partial replacement” is then repeated, and a total of 3-4 liters of “old” material will be replaced.
Types of gearboxes in LADA Granta
LADA Granta cars are equipped with the following types of transmissions:
- 4-speed automatic transmission
- 5-speed manual transmission (VAZ-2181)
- 5-speed robotic gearbox based on the VAZ-2181 gearbox
The JATCO automatic transmission was developed for NISSAN vehicles with an engine capacity of less than 1.6 liters. In Russia, such gearboxes are installed on LADA Granta, LADA Kalina 2nd generation cars, as well as DATSUN on-DO and mi-DO.
Some people mistakenly believe that this is a very outdated unit that is equipped with budget cars. However, this is not at all true. This checkpoint was first introduced in 2010. It was intended for NISSAN MICRA cars for the Asian market.
A simple and proven design has allowed the unit to earn a reputation as an unpretentious and fairly reliable automatic transmission. With timely maintenance and careful operation, it is capable of driving more than 500,000 km. The disadvantages include intolerance to a sudden start from a standstill and prolonged movement at high speed.
A manual transmission under the designation VAZ-2181 was introduced in 2012. It is installed on almost all LADA and DATSUN cars. This unit is an updated VAZ-2170 box, from which only shafts and gears remain, and all other components are new or improved old ones.
This version of the gearbox adds a cable drive, which allows you to shift gears more clearly and also eliminates unnecessary noise and vibration. The new unit is protected from accidental engagement of reverse gear and is characterized by increased reliability. Overall this is a good box with some negative points. Among its main disadvantages, a very strong howl is noted, especially when braking the engine.
The disadvantages of this unit include jerks when changing gears while driving through traffic jams and climbing uphill. Sometimes AMT may drop several gears for no reason or, conversely, not upshift for a long time at high speeds. With the release of AMT 2.0, these problems were resolved.
