How does the Lada Largus Cross differ from the regular Largus?

Many do not see the need to pay attention to the differences between the classic model and the Cross version due to the slight difference. But there are still distinctive features. Perhaps, to automobile experts who constantly keep their finger on the pulse of events in the Russian automobile industry, the differences are obvious.

This review is not for specialists, but for ordinary consumers who, when purchasing one or another modification of Largus, will be interested in questions about the engine, dimensions, ground clearance or wheels of this car. And there are a considerable number of such potential buyers, because in addition to the fact that the classic family car has proven itself well for several years, the cross-country version attracts with its adaptability to Russian road conditions.

Also, some modified body features give the off-road station wagon a slightly different look. Thus, potential consumers become interested in what differences they will have to pay extra for. Therefore, it’s definitely worth comparing “colleagues” on the conveyor.

Me and my brother from the village: what is the difference between Largus and Largus Cross?

What is this all for

The Largus Cross modification has the same story as its “younger sister”, Kalina Cross.
People who are aware of the news of the auto industry in recent years have known everything about it for a long time (well, or almost everything), but people who are interested in cars insofar as they often have questions like “does it have all-wheel drive?” what kind of engine?”, “how high is it?” It is to them that we address our material today. We are familiar with the “cross” Largus firsthand. In 2014, when this car was only at the stage of pre-production samples, we did the first test drive of Largus Cross , and a year later we drove the production car as part of a long test of Largus Cross . But since then there have been several significant news that have slightly changed the idea of the “cross”, so we will give a dry summary of the facts - how does Largus Cross differ from the usual Largus today.

Lada Largus

Lada Largus Cross

Technique

The car remains front-wheel drive, as it almost completely uses the platform of the regular Largus. However, in terms of ground clearance, the Largus Cross is 25 mm higher than its “standard” brother - the clearance of the “cross” when fully loaded is 175 mm. This, of course, does not make Largus Cross a crossover , but it does provide certain advantages on Russian roads and off-road.

Lada Largus

The increase in ground clearance was achieved by two measures: firstly, by using retuned struts in the front and other shock absorbers in the suspension, coupled with higher springs at the rear, and secondly, by installing different wheels - instead of 185/65 R15 there are 205/55 R16 Continental brand. Due to the wheels, only about 5 mm of ground clearance is gained, the main part of the “lift” is due to modifications to the suspension. The strut supports, silent blocks, steering and brakes were also adjusted.

At the moment, only one engine is available on the Largus Cross, a petrol 16-valve 1.6-liter 102-horsepower from Renault Logan (interestingly, the specification for Largus previously indicated 105 hp), while on “ simply Larguse” you can choose between this engine and the more affordable 87-horsepower eight-valve VAZ , which replaced the previously installed 82-horsepower eight-valve Renault. The entire Largus family has one gearbox – a five-speed “mechanics” Renault.

Salon

From the very start of sales, the Largus Cross was offered in a configuration identical to the top version of the regular Largus, and this remains so to this day, so the “cross” has all the options possible in the Largus family: air conditioning, two airbags, ABS, EBD, leather steering wheel , heated front seats, electrically adjustable mirrors, four power windows, an audio system with four speakers, a luggage rack on the roof lining, a driver's seat with height adjustment, as well as parking sensors, which appeared on the list of “extras” in the spring of 2015 .

However, there are differences in the interior. Initially, the “cross” had original orange stitching on the seats, orange inserts on the center console and orange trim on the door trims. Now, starting from July 2015, along with this “youth” version of the interior trim, you can choose a calmer one, with elements of gray color .

Note that despite one single engine and one single configuration, the Largus Cross still has two versions - with a five-seat and a seven-seat interior.

Appearance

Turning again to the relationship with the luxury Lagrus, we note that the “cross” has foglights and roof rails, like a regular Largus. However, the rims are of an original design and, as we have already said, larger in size. You can distinguish the “cross” from the front and back not only due to the higher position of the body above the road, but also by the unpainted bumpers. Elements of the front bumper rise to the hood and form a kind of “mask”, which is especially noticeable on a “cross” with a light-colored body. In addition, at the bottom of the Largus Cross bumper there is a silver lining that imitates “off-road” protection.

Lada Largus

The side features the biggest differences: in addition to the wheels and ground clearance, what catches your eye are the unpainted plastic linings on the arches and sills, as well as the black body pillars. Well, according to tradition: if it is still difficult for you to understand whether this is a regular Largus or its cross-version, there is a corresponding nameplate on the tailgate.

The price difference between Largus and Largus Cross is only about 20,000 rubles. Such a small “delta” is reasonable: there really aren’t that many differences and none of them are fundamental. However, one cannot deny the fact that all these “accents” made Largus Cross completely different. Accordingly, both the target audiences and the potential “habitat” of these cars are different.

Specifications

One of the main advantages of the LADA Largus Cross 2021 can be considered the ground clearance increased to 19.5 centimeters. The rest of the car's characteristics are quite mediocre: under the hood there will be an uncontested 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an output of 105 horsepower. The drive will be front-wheel drive only, and the gearbox will be a five-speed manual. The plant is discussing the possibility of installing a 1.8-liter power unit with 122 horsepower on the car in the future, but whether this project is being implemented is still unknown.

As a test drive of the new product showed, the car copes quite well with city roads and highways, but, despite the prefix “cross” in the name, it is not very suitable for off-road use. In addition, both fuel consumption and the dynamic qualities of the car are very far from modern standards.

Other reviews

Against the background of the constant appearance of new cars on the world market, the Lada Vesta of the 2015 model year is not such a new product. However, it can still be considered the discovery of the Russian car market thanks to its very modern appearance and well-thought-out technical “stuffing”. The sedan's exterior was designed by ex-Mercedes-Benz and Volvo designer Steve Mattin, and was among the first people lucky enough to sit in it.

The raised cross-country hatchback Lada Xray, which AvtoVAZ dubbed a crossover for advertising purposes, is called by many the highest quality model of the domestic manufacturer, and there is indeed reason for this. Firstly, there is an abundance of high quality imported parts, and secondly, this car has decent ground clearance and a proprietary 1.8-liter engine.

Cars nowadays don't work on anything. There are even hydrogen ones that literally “live” on fuel cells. Water is, of course, good and incredibly environmentally friendly, but it is still painfully unpopular and expensive to implement. Is it compressed natural gas or, as it is also called, methane in a cylinder, like the new version of Lada Vesta CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)! A gas sedan is cheaper.

5- and 7-seater Lada Largus station wagons appeared on the Russian market in 2012, becoming a kind of continuation of the cheapest Renault Logan model, only under the auspices of a domestic manufacturer. As you might guess, the Logan-like Largus turned out to be the first Lada car built on the basis of the budget B0 platform, on the basis of which a number of Lada, Renault and Nissan models were designed.

Pleasant differences

During the measurements, it turned out that the ground clearance of the Cross version is as much as 210 mm (under the protection of the engine crankcase). For a car that, according to its creators, should regularly drive off the asphalt, this is not bad. For a regular Largus, the ground clearance was 182 mm under a similar engine compartment shield. By the way, the manufacturer states that when fully loaded, including passengers in the last, third row of seats, the ground clearance will be at least 170 and 145 mm, respectively.

As I was told at VAZ, when working with the suspension of the cross-version, the engineers were faced with the task of maintaining the suspension settings of the regular Largus as much as possible, and they succeeded. In terms of handling and level of driving comfort, the cars are very similar. At least, the average driver is unlikely to feel the difference in the behavior of the car on a good road. But when driving on a dirt road or broken asphalt, the Largus Cross slightly benefits in terms of smoothness due to the increased rolling radius of the wheel and wider tires.

Appearance of Largus Cross on the Russian market

The crossover version was developed as a result of AvtoVAZ’s policy: improving cars and striving to meet the needs of all categories of drivers. Over the years, the standard Largus has established itself as a market leader among fans of quiet family driving.

In addition, Largus is available in the form of a van. This fact adds to the number of consumers of this model entrepreneurs, rural residents and everyone interested in transporting cargo. For this segment of buyers, a standard station wagon is suitable in almost all respects: a comfortable, roomy interior, the ability to accommodate from 5 to 7 passengers inside (depending on the purchased modification), low fuel consumption and discreet classic style.

But since, as mentioned above, among Lada consumers there are drivers who often drive outside the city on rough terrain, the question of creating an off-road version of Largus has become urgent. AvtoVAZ specialists revealed that the demand for the production of such a car is high, and it was decided to design a modified version of the station wagon, which is better adapted for off-road use. And, starting from 2015, a modified version of the station wagon is produced with the cross prefix.

Improved adaptation to poor road conditions was achieved by changing some technical parameters. There was also a slight modification to the external and internal appearance of the car.

Options and prices

There is no need to count on an abundance of configurations: the cross-version has a “Luxury” specification, and the number of seats and body design also varies - all-metal with a partition or with glazing in the cargo-passenger version. The price of the simplest car will be just over 650 thousand rubles, and the upper limit will come close to 1 million Russian currency.

Differences in exterior

The appearance, of course, has changed a little, but it is still the same car. Plastic protection appeared along the entire perimeter of the body on the Cross. It consists of such parts as:

  • Wheel arch covers;
  • Threshold covers.

Since the Cross is in fact a modified and slightly improved version of the standard Largus, it is equipped with fog lights and special roof rails. Also on the Cross station wagon, new wheels of a unique design appeared, which became a little larger. Now they are sixteen inches. The car's bumpers (both front and rear) are intentionally not painted and are the same color as the plastic protection. At the bottom of the bumper there is a silver trim that reproduces off-road protection.

But when viewed from the side, these two cars can be distinguished not only by the external linings on the sills and arches, but also by the unpainted body pillar. On the trunk door of a new car there is a special nameplate with the name of the car.

It is worth noting separately that the cross-version, which is also represented by a luxury package, is only 20 thousand rubles more expensive than the standard Largus. It's hard to imagine why the car was priced so cheaply. But on the other hand, this is good, because you can get a quality car at relatively low prices.

Although, on the other hand, there really aren’t that many differences between the cars. This means that there are no reasons for a strong increase in prices either. The car is undoubtedly worth the money. But the fact that they did not overestimate it greatly was done correctly by AvtoVAZ representatives.

Therefore, if you are thinking about buying a Lada Largus or Largus Cross, then you don’t have to worry too much. The difference is small. If possible, take a second car. And if there is no opportunity, then there is no need to be upset.
