Vesta SW Cross with Japanese CVT

For the first time, such a transmission began to be installed on the LADA X-RAY Cross, and then on the Vesta SV Cross - with the same 113-horsepower engine, which, as is known, in tandem with the same variator is successfully used on many models, including Capture, Logan and Duster.

According to reviews, this “box” is more suitable for measured driving in city mode and is designed for buyers who do not plan to “knead the dirt” and test the off-road qualities of their “cross-station wagon”.

Brake system

It should be noted that this whole story with the ABS block from the Prius became possible thanks to a certain Japanese engineer who decided that it was necessary to separate (!) the hydraulic part of the ABS block and its control unit (usually everything is done in a single housing). That is, the Prius ABS hydraulic unit itself does not contain any programmable electronics, only valve solenoids, pressure sensors and a pump motor. All this is output directly to the connector and is connected to a separate external control unit via a wiring harness. That is, if desired, the control unit can be replaced and made your own ABS, ESP, electronic handbrake for rally/drift, skid steer like a tank, etc.

I started installing it on the car by making a paper mock-up of the ABS block of the Prius using 3D models from the OSCC repository. With difficulty, but we managed to stuff everything under the hood. To design the brackets, the engine compartment was measured using an “arm” type coordinate measuring machine.

The ABS block from a Prius can be found at a disassembly site for about 15 thousand rubles. Assembling the brake system also requires brake lines, fittings, plugs, etc. For some reason, the BOM of brake components for the Kia Soul was removed from the oscc-wiki, I had to look for it in old commits. I didn’t want to make lines with AN3 fittings myself for quality reasons, so I ordered ready-made ones from America. The hydraulic diagram was found in issues.

Modifications and options for Russia

Many motorists will appreciate the updated steering wheel of the Lada Vesta Cross, which is now lined with leather upholstery and has become more comfortable in the hand due to its increased thickness. But the majority of Russian motorists are still confident that a car without “discs” at the rear cannot be ranked on a par with foreign cars. The engineers shrugged their shoulders, but AvtoVAZ marketers insisted on developing new brakes. However, rear “discs” are the lot of “advanced” versions.

It is easy to notice that the gas tank filler flap has lost its protruding “ear”: now it snaps and is locked with a central lock. The keyhole on the trunk door has disappeared - instead, a regular button finally appeared in the niche above the license plate. The antenna on the roof of station wagons has become a stylish fin (although the twig will remain on sedans), and the exhaust pipe of the Cross version now has a “double-barrel” nozzle, although on the basic version a thin tube still peeks out from under the bumper.

AvtoVAZ has not yet published photographs of the interior and trunk, but at the beginning of the year it was known that they were planning to introduce a box armrest between the front seats and a folding armrest for the rear sofa on Vesta. Over time, these improvements are expected on regular sedans. And the instrument panel with daytime lighting and the lamp above the rear sofa, on the contrary, have already migrated to all ordinary Vestas from export versions of the sedan.

The attention to detail, unusual for a Russian car, is captivating. We know from VAZ chief designer Mattin that the Sport Wagon is a compromise between a hatchback and a full-fledged station wagon. From the factory engineers - that the five-door body turned out to be as rigid as the three-volume one. And from colleagues specializing in AvtoVAZ products - that, alas, there are no two identical Vestas.

Especially the SW Cross version raised by 25 mm in a special orange color. Her main problem is that her appearance is too promising. Looking at the car from the outside, I want to buy it. Having traveled, I part with this thought. More honest, in my opinion, is a simple SW station wagon. He is also quite handsome, but does not pretend to be a “million-ruble car” and therefore raises fewer unjustified expectations. However, I won’t buy it either: 750-780 thousand is decent money, for which I expect a better quality interior and a competent power unit.

It seemed to me that the Vesta chassis was not ready for 17-inch wheels. Both the smoothness of the ride and steering feedback suffer from them. The example of a simple SW shows that the electric amplifier is, in principle, well tuned, but I feel the Cross worse. The tires are wider and allow for faster cornering. But the kinematics of the clamped suspension have not been changed, so dynamic driving is less confident than in the case of the standard modification. The Cross slips a bit harshly.

I drive through the broken concrete of the mountainous Olympic village, alternating between station wagons. The regular SW is a lot more comfortable. The energy capacity of both versions is approximately the same, and both allow rare, painful breakdowns. However, the Cross transmits much more detail into the cabin and reacts more sharply to medium-sized bumps. As a result, of the two versions, it is the SW that makes the more solid impression. And the interior decoration of the standard interior is less pretentious. I think that over time there will be some kind of intermediate level for those who do not want to sacrifice comfort: SW in a Cross body kit, for example.
