Which is better Priora or VAZ 2114: a debate about the merits of two models from AvtoVAZ
Admirers of the domestic automobile industry follow with great interest new products from AvtoVAZ OJSC.
They discuss the restyling of cars, argue about which model is better. But finding the right one in this debate is quite difficult, because as many cars as there are so many opinions. Some people like time-tested modifications of vehicles, while others have great confidence in those that have just come off the production line. The truth can only be revealed when cars are compared in all respects, including price-quality ratio. It is usually believed that the new generation of AvtoVAZ products is significantly better than those cars that were produced earlier, for example, models such as 2106, 2108, 2109. However, the statement that Priora is better than 2014 only because it was released later is fundamentally wrong. It all depends on the requirements that the car enthusiast places on his “iron horse”. In this case, a number of characteristics need to be taken into account.
Characteristics
Initially, the 2114 model was conceived as a family car, but it also appealed to representatives of the younger generation. The design of this car is favorable for tuning, which is popular with young people. But the Priora really became a family car. The spacious interior and roomy trunk attracted the attention of married couples with children. You can comfortably drive such a vehicle both within the city and beyond.
Comparing cars from the same manufacturer is difficult. What seems like a disadvantage to someone is an advantage to another. One can only note the differences.
- The body is noticeable, the interior is comfortable
- Fast and reliable
- Vehicle configurations
- Safety first
The body is noticeable, the interior is comfortable
The VAZ 2114 was created on the basis of the 21093 model, and borrowed its front part from the VAZ 2115. In general, the car looks quite dynamic, the streamlined sills and side moldings give it a sporty look. The hood of the car is directed forward, demonstrating self-confidence on the road. This is emphasized by the headlights, radiator grille, and front spoiler.
But Priora, created on the basis of the famous Lada 2110, has the smooth body shape of its predecessor. If you look at the Priora from the side, it strongly resembles a “ten”. Although the manufacturer claims that most of the parts in the body have been changed, and in particular:
- optics;
- hood;
- trunk;
- wings;
- rear and front bumpers.
As for the interior, it is still more comfortable in the Priora. Perhaps due to the fact that Italian specialists were involved in its development. In addition, there are several years of difference between the 14th model and the Priora, and during this time the operating systems, seat design, and upholstery texture have been improved.
It should be noted that the new version of the VAZ 2114 has the necessary set of operating systems. These are power windows, fog lights, alloy wheels, heated seats, etc. However, the range of various devices, niches, and pockets in the Priora is huge, which makes a trip in this car more comfortable. There is an armrest built between the driver and passenger seats where small items can be placed. Such nuances, which ensure the convenience of the driver and passengers, are certainly pleasing.
Fast and reliable
Of course, the most important differences are to be found under the hood. Priora vs VAZ 2114 does not win much by such a criterion as engine power. Priora has a 1.6-liter engine equipped with 16 valves, which develops power up to 98 horsepower. Another type of engine of this car is 1.6 liters with a power of 81 hp. With. And this unit is similar to that installed on 2114.
Moreover, both engines have a modern fuel injection distribution system, which improves the dynamic properties of the car and increases fuel economy. For example, 2114 in the combined cycle consumes only 7.6 liters of gasoline per 100 km. Both cars have a manual transmission. There is a slight difference in overclocking capabilities. Thus, Priora accelerates to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds, and VAZ model 14 – in 13.
Those who care about the environment usually choose Priora. Unlike model 2114, its engine meets European standards in terms of toxicity standards.
The Priora station wagon is equipped with only one engine option: 1.6 liters with a power of 98 hp. With. He copes with his duties perfectly. True, if all the seats in the cabin are occupied and the trunk is filled to the top, then the car’s air conditioning will work with difficulty. This is noted by specialists conducting test drives.
In the Priora vs VAZ 2114 competition in the “maximum speed” category, Priora wins, which can easily accelerate to 183 km/h, while the 14 model can only reach 160 km/h. However, the latter has an undoubted advantage: the VAZ 2114 is much lighter than the Priora, so it literally flies on the highway and is also highly stable. In addition, the 14 model has high ground clearance, which allows it to easily overcome off-road conditions.
Vehicle configurations
The advantage of Priora is its rich equipment. The driver can choose one of three trim levels:
- standard;
- norm;
- lux.
The VAZ-2114 has only two equipment options for the car - standard and luxury. Moreover, the first of them has a minimal set of options. The car has a built-in central locking and immobilizer. In addition, the steering column can be adjusted, and the front windows are electrically adjustable. The base model 2114 is equipped with a spoiler, halogen headlights, and steel wheels. In the “luxury” configuration, an on-board computer and heated front seats are added to all of the above.
The standard equipment of the Priora is similar to that of the VAZ 2114, except that an audio system is added. But the “norm” package turns out to be an order of magnitude higher. Power steering, climate control, and heated mirrors are already present here. The multimedia system has also changed. There is now the possibility of a navigation mode and a CD radio. The car's security has been strengthened and an alarm system has been installed.
And finally, the luxury version of the equipment includes parking, light, rain sensors, air conditioning, and electric side mirrors. At the request of the car enthusiast, the basic equipment can be improved with additional systems. True, you will have to pay extra for this.
To date, production of the VAZ 2114 has been discontinued. But Priora has undergone another update; the presentation of the model took place quite recently in Tolyatti. But those who managed to purchase the new 2114 really made a bargain. The cost of this technically reliable car ranged from 297 to 301 thousand rubles. The price of the Priora is significantly higher. It depends on the type of body and configuration. For example, a sedan after restyling in an average configuration costs from 367 to 413 thousand rubles. And the most expensive option is the luxury version of the hatchback, for which you will have to pay from 446,100 to 456,100 rubles.
Some drivers choose the cheapest car trim and then equip it with various operating systems themselves. For example, they install an audio player, air conditioning, and passenger safety systems. This option is more advantageous in price than purchasing a car in the “luxury” configuration.
Safety first
In any car, especially if it has family status, the driver is primarily interested in safety. In AvtoVAZ models of past years, this parameter was not given much importance. But in modern cars, the safety of life and health comes first.
Crash tests carried out with the VAZ 2114 car showed that the car is significantly better than its predecessor, model 2109. Thus, in a frontal collision, the driver does not receive a severe head injury thanks to the safely installed steering wheel and instrument panel. In addition, the load on the driver's neck has been reduced and there is no strong compression in the chest area. However, the vehicle is far from ideal performance.
But the Lada Priora is an example of the domestic automobile industry in compliance with European passive safety standards. This was confirmed by crash tests carried out in accordance with the rules of the UN Economic Commission for Europe. The Priora's security systems are significantly superior to those installed on the VAZ 2114. And as the manufacturers assure, this is not the limit.
Help with advice: Priora or 2114?

I’m just about to get a new (first) car, I think for a first car it’s better to have a 2114 or fork out for a Priora, I don’t have a lot of money for car maintenance, so only a Lada! PS - I know that a Japanese or a German is better, but I’m not pushing it yet, just fret. Thank you in advance.

there are already a lot of topics about this, don’t be lazy and read it, don’t create an extra reason for nibblers

there are a lot of them, I read, I got the impression that the Priora is not a car but a hemorrhage that breaks down every 1000 km, then write to me ALEXANDER99 2114 less crumbling. Priora, if I take a luxury one, I’m afraid that everything will fall out in it!

The friability of domestic cars is greatly exaggerated. And it depends, this flowability, mainly on the asshole-handedness of either the owner or the service in which it is served. I recommend reading my review of 21130-22. Of course, she is not 2114, but these are the same trousers only on the other side. Pros for a first car: low cost of ownership and repairs in case of “driving” errors, which are not uncommon for a beginner. Awesome maintainability. You can do everything yourself, right down to reprogramming the controller (a bunch of firmware, a lot of software) if you have the head and hands, if not, any village service can handle it. Samara, compared to Priora, has a lower power supply for a beginner, which is more useful than negative. There is less chance of “sticking your feet in the fat” - losing control and getting a broken car and a hospital bed. Less attractive to car thieves and starting price. In general, 2114 is a good option for a first car. Although, of course, the Priora in the 18th configuration, in common parlance - the super luxury, has its own amenities in the form of a rain sensor, light sensor, parking sensors, etc. For this money, of course, it is very tempting. But for the first car I would choose Samara.

Of course, the owners and the service are to blame for everything, because the bastards ruined the car at night so that it would come to them!
