MD tuning stands for throttle modernization. There are quite a few ways to modify the throttle assembly, but this article will discuss the most popular scheme proposed by the American engineer Ron Hutton. According to him, correct MD tuning can increase engine power and reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%.

How to adapt the gas pedal?

We carry out adaptation either after repair, replacement of the computer, or long-term removal of the battery.

  1. We connect the battery.
  2. We insert the key for the first time after installing the battery and turn it to the “ignition” position. The indicators on the panel light up, wait at least 30 seconds and start the engine. Important: the temperature of the air and the engine must be at least 7 degrees warmer, otherwise adaptation is useless, the engine will operate in emergency mode.
  3. Next, we adapt the ignition diagnostic function: we accelerate in second gear and brake with the engine at 4 thousand rpm. Up to 1 thousand rpm - we must perform this operation six times during one trip.

Adaptation of the diagnostic function is necessary to preserve the catalyst and possible fire.

The main symptoms of a dirty throttle valve are:

  1. Floating idle

The damper is contaminated by carbon deposits and oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation system, so it is advisable to clean it every 40-50 thousand km.

1. Remove the throttle assembly. Contamination is visible on the throttle valve and on the assembly channel.

2. Treat the internal cavity of the throttle assembly, the throttle valve itself, its axis and the walls of the air channel with an aerosol cleaner.

Perhaps this is exactly the case when one should not interfere with a properly working mechanism, because... There were no indications for surgical intervention in the Granta throttle assembly.

The engine is running. Idle speed does not float. The response of the throttle to the electronic accelerator takes place in normal mode. Occasionally, while standing at a traffic light, I noticed that the tachometer needle was trying to unobtrusively change its position, but the electronics quickly eliminated this incident. In early spring, one could refer to a certain amount of condensation that sometimes appears in the fuel system. Now, May. Warm. But sometimes the arrow still tries to “twitch”.

The situation is not annoying, but the mileage is under 17,000 km. indicates that behind the throttle it is not at all the same as it was in the first hundreds of kilometers.

I did not contact the “dealer” service station, where Grant was under warranty, to clean the throttle. After we “adjusted” the thermal clearances of the valves during maintenance-1, there was no desire to communicate with such “specialists”.

It’s high time for AVTOVAZ to check its dealers and subdealers for high-quality performance of work when undergoing scheduled maintenance of warranty vehicles. There are enough statistics. And those who are negligent will be punished with a ruble so that the desire to run an official car service will no longer exist once and for all.

If adjusting the “valves,” for me, still requires consolidating the experience gained, then with cleaning the throttle valve, everything is much simpler.

  1. The wire is disconnected from the negative terminal of the car battery.
  2. The tightening that secures the ventilation hose going to the engine crankcase is loosened.
  3. The hose attached to the fitting of the air supply pipe is disconnected.
  4. The clamp connecting the pipe and the throttle becomes loose.
  5. The pipe is disconnected.
  6. The connector connecting the wires to the throttle assembly is disconnected.
  7. The bolts securing the throttle valve are unscrewed.
  8. The gasket located on the flange of the intake module is dismantled.

It should be noted that the gasket is disposable; when dismantling it, it is necessary to subsequently install a new element.

  • We warm up the engine to t=80 0 C and turn off the car. Then we connect the USB-KKL cable to the diagnostic connector and, after turning on the ignition, launch the diagnostic program (VAG-COM 3.11).
  • We enter section 01-engine.
  • We poll the fault memory (02).
  • We erase detected faults (05).
  • After returning to the previous menu, enter the “adaptation-10” section.
  • On channel 00, press the “read” button.
  • Save the result and return to factory settings.

  • Fully release the accelerator pedal.
  • Turn on the ignition and wait at least 3 seconds.
  • Within 5 seconds, press the accelerator pedal five times, then wait 7 seconds.
  • Pressing the accelerator pedal, hold it until the CHECK stops flashing and lights up constantly (about 20 seconds are required).
  • After the CHECK light comes on continuously, you must release the pedal within 3 seconds.
  • We start the engine to run at XX.
  • Press the pedal several times to check the stability of the XX.

How to flush the throttle valve yourself?

Despite certain difficulties in performing this task, it is quite possible to wash the throttle valve with your own hands. To do this, just read the normal manual for this process, as well as acquire all the necessary materials and tools. The process of flushing the throttle body will look different on different cars. For example, on carburetor cars it is much easier to complete this task, but the carburetor must be cleaned regularly. But in modern injection power units, flushing the damper is not so easy. However, nothing is impossible. To complete this task you will need to do the following:

  1. remove the pipe leading from the air filter directly to the throttle valve;
  2. Next, follow the instructions to dismantle the throttle - often it is enough to unscrew four bolts;
  3. We put all the fasteners carefully in a box so as not to lose them, because purchasing them will not be an easy task;
  4. To flush the throttle valve, you can use special products (for chokes or carburetors);
  5. All internal parts should be washed until they are shiny, then allow the system to dry completely;
  6. put all the components in place and carefully tighten the fastening bolts, then do not rush to close the throttle with the lid;
  7. insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the stage of switching on the ignition directly, but without starting the engine;
  8. Make sure the throttle valve closes completely after warming up (it will take 5-15 minutes to warm up).

After this, you can close everything with a clear conscience and test the car for changed parameters. In general, the procedure for cleaning the throttle valve takes about an hour, but the first time everything may take a little longer. The main task of the car owner is to correctly and accurately follow all instructions. Many people ask the question what to do if the valve does not go into place after the procedure. In this case, you will have to go through the process of “learning” the throttle valve, which is worthy of a separate instruction. But this process is best performed by specialists.

When should you not perform remote sensing adaptation?

It is worth noting that it is appropriate to carry out the above procedures using software and special diagnostic equipment in the event of a failure of the damper settings. It does not matter whether the electronic parameters are broken or the mechanical settings of the equipment are lost.

If the operation of the throttle is impaired due to wear, then it is more advisable to think about repairing or replacing the part. If suddenly, after the steps described above, adaptation does not occur, it is worth checking the motor responsible for opening/closing the damper. There may not be enough power for the node to operate properly.

For example, cleaning the damper body inside and outside before starting adaptation is necessary for any make of car.

The only difference is that in some cars the damper is adjusted using a cable, and in others using electronics. This difference will manifest itself in the choice of adaptation parameters.

DIY throttle tuning

The price of MD tuning at a service station is from 3,000 to 7,000 rubles. As the experience of VAZ and LADA owners shows, it is possible to correctly modify the throttle assembly (CS) yourself, without having any special knowledge or precisely verified drawings. The only special tools you need are a 6 mm spherical cutter and a drill.

Revision procedure

:

  1. Remove the throttle assembly.
  2. Make two recesses around the damper (approximately 2-3 mm, no more than 5 mm), as shown in the drawing (great accuracy does not matter).
  3. Remove burrs with fine sandpaper.

The process itself is not complicated and will not take much time. The advantage of MD tuning is that there is no need to flash the electronic engine control unit.

Removing the damper

In order to understand how to remove the throttle valve on a VAZ 2114, you need the following tools:

  • Do-it-yourself cleaning of the throttle valve of VAZ 2110 and 2114
  • Screwdriver regular and Phillips
  • Tara
  • Pair of M13 bolts

Remove it in case of washing, replacing with a new one, replacing the gasket of the throttle assembly, replacing the IAC sensor. Many people advise draining the antifreeze before work, although not much liquid is lost in the process (that’s what the container is for), it’s easier to pour it back later.

Important point: cool the engine before operating the damper! And now the process of how to remove the throttle valve:

  1. We opened the hood, removed the protection (especially for the 1.6-liter fourteens)
  2. Open the cap of the expansion tank and reduce the pressure in the cooling system to zero
  3. See the throttle valve pipe on the VAZ 2114 - it must be removed. It comes from the air filter, such a thick, black plastic pipe.
  4. Then, we move to the gas pedal cable and disconnect it
  5. We remove the contact system from the throttle assembly sensors - IAC and TPS
  6. Using a cross, we unscrew the throttle pipes; these are two hoses along its edges. One is slightly thicker than the second, it contains antifreeze, you need to put a container under it so that it does not spill past. Then we take those same M13 bolts and plug the unscrewed pipes so that they don’t leak.
  7. Between these two hoses there is a third one - it comes from the adsorber - it also needs to be disconnected.
  8. Now the throttle assembly, we unscrew its fasteners with a 13 mm spanner, it is attached to the intake manifold.
  9. That's it, let's take it out.

Another way to make sure that the antifreeze doesn’t go anywhere: we start with the middle hose coming from the adsorber, then loosen the fastening of the antifreeze pipes. Without removing them, unscrew the fasteners of the throttle valve assembly and pull it out along with the antifreeze pipes. And only after that we plug each one with bolts prepared in advance.

Now you can clean the throttle, replace it with a new one, check the condition of the gasket (for a 1.5 engine) or the seal ring (for a 1.6 engine). We remember about the container with antifreeze and add the rest back into the pipe.

The main thing is that when you remove your used spare parts, do it carefully. There is a risk of damaging the surface of the assembly (aluminum is a soft material and requires gentle handling).

Before installation, all surfaces that come into contact with the gasket and manifold must be cleaned. Washing the unit is quite simple: you need a cool WD solution. Just don’t wash the TPS! As well as a valve for controlling air flow at idle. Otherwise, you will damage the devices.

Mistakes when cleaning the throttle valve

Many inexperienced car owners can incorrectly clean the throttle assembly, at a minimum risking not getting the desired effect, and at maximum - completely damaging and disabling the throttle body. Therefore, it is important to understand when to do the procedure, how to do it and what means to use.

To properly clean the throttle body DO NOT :

  • Clean the damper in any unclear situation (there are even jokes about this).
  • Clean the damper without removing it (the effectiveness of such cleaning is insignificant, since often it is only possible to remove carbon deposits on the damper itself, and the internal walls and air channels of the damper are not cleaned).
  • When cleaning with a rag, use excessive force, which can lead to damage to both the damper itself and the nearby TPS.
  • Use brushes rather than soft materials. Such an error also quite often leads to loss of performance of the remote control, since on some throttle units the inner wall and damper are coated with molybdenum for even smoother air passage. This layer is often confused with plaque and is removed. As a result, the damper begins to either “bite” or allow excess air to pass through (the speed increases).
  • Forgetting to teach the throttle after cleaning. Dampers with an electronic gas pedal require proper learning of the remote control in order to set the idle speed to the required value.

The throttle valve should be cleaned every 30-50 thousand km . Adhering to all the above recommendations and taking into account the main mistakes that inexperienced car owners make, no more questions should arise about how to clean the throttle valve, be it mechanical or electronic. For cleaning you need a minimum of equipment and costs, just a carb cleaner and clean rags, as well as a screwdriver for dismantling the unit.

What does it look like?

A common method of tuning a throttle valve with your own hands is to install a throttle valve of increased diameter. For example, on VAZ models the standard damper has a diameter of 46 mm, the tuned one – 54 mm. Of course, you shouldn’t count on a colossal increase in power due to such changes, but such tuning of the VAZ throttle valve can still change the behavior of the car.

The shutter is made from an old one; you just need to bore out the channel and install an enlarged shutter. That's all the tuning of the throttle valve of a VAZ 2110, or another model. In a simple way, the narrowest oxygen supply channel is enlarged.
