Purpose of the thermostat on the VAZ 2106
The thermostat must control the degree of heating of the coolant and react in a timely manner when the antifreeze temperature becomes too high or, conversely, too low.
The thermostat maintains the temperature of the coolant in the engine cooling system in the desired range
The device can direct coolant through either a small or large cooling circle, thereby preventing the engine from overheating, or, conversely, helping it quickly warm up after a long period of inactivity. All this makes the thermostat the most important element of the VAZ 2106 cooling system.
Thermostat location
The thermostat in the VAZ 2106 is located to the right of the engine, where the pipes for discharging coolant from the main radiator are located. To see the thermostat, simply open the hood of the car. The convenient location of this part is a big plus when it becomes necessary to replace it.

Principle of operation
As mentioned above, the main task of the thermostat is to maintain the engine temperature within specified limits. When the engine needs to warm up, the thermostat blocks the main radiator until the engine reaches the optimal temperature. This simple measure can significantly extend the life of the engine and reduce wear on its components. The thermostat has a master valve. When the coolant reaches a temperature of 70 °C, the valve opens (it should be noted here that the opening temperature of the main valve can be higher - up to 90 °C, and this depends both on the design of the thermostat and on the thermal filler that is in it used).
Essentially, a thermostat is a regular valve that responds to changes in antifreeze temperature
The second important element of the thermostat is a special compression cylinder made of brass, inside of which there is a small piece of technical wax. When the antifreeze in the system reaches 80 °C, the wax in the cylinder melts. As it expands, it presses on the long rod connected to the main thermostat valve. The rod extends from the cylinder and opens the valve. And when the antifreeze cools, the wax in the cylinder begins to harden, and its expansion coefficient decreases. As a result, the pressure on the rod weakens and the thermostatic valve closes.
By opening the valve here we mean moving its leaf by only 0.1 mm. This is the initial opening value, which consistently increases by 0.1 mm as the antifreeze temperature rises by two to three degrees. When the coolant temperature rises by 20 °C, the thermostat valve opens fully. The full opening temperature can vary from 90 to 102 °C depending on the manufacturer and design of the thermostat.
How to check the thermostat VAZ 2114
If you haven't installed it yet, you can test the thermostat at home. Take a container with cold water; a thermometer that can show 100 degrees; and the thermal regulator itself. We put it all on the stove and heat the water until the temperature reaches 85 degrees. After that, we look at the main thermostat valve. When 87 degrees appears, the valve should begin to open. If for some reason it does not open or opens before the reached temperature, then this indicates a malfunction of the device.
If a new device is already installed, you need to check it on a cold engine. After the engine has started, grab the lower pipe connected to the radiator. Up to 80 degrees it should be absolutely cold. At 85 degrees the tube should already begin to warm up slowly. And when the temperature reaches 90 degrees, the valve should open completely and the full process of moving the heated coolant begins.
It may also happen that after starting the car engine, at a temperature of 50 degrees, heated liquid may already flow. Do not allow this under any circumstances, this indicates a malfunction of the thermal regulator itself and means that the main valve is open continuously.
Types of thermostats
The VAZ 2106 car was produced for many years. And during this time, engineers made a number of changes to it, including thermostats. Let's look at what thermostats were installed on the VAZ 2106 from the release of the first cars to the present day.
Single valve thermostat
Single-valve thermostats were installed on the very first “sixes” that rolled off the VAZ assembly line. The operating principle of this device has been described in detail above. To date, these devices are considered obsolete, and finding them on sale is not so easy.
The first “sixes” were equipped with the simplest, single-valve thermostats
Electronic thermostat
An electronic thermostat is the latest and most advanced modification that replaced single-valve devices. Its main advantages are high accuracy and reliability. Electronic thermostats have two operating modes: automatic and manual.
Electronic thermostats are used in modern cooling systems and differ from their predecessors in high accuracy and much greater reliability
Liquid thermostat
Thermostats are classified not only by design, but also by the type of fillers. Liquid thermostats were the very first to appear. The main component of a liquid thermostat is a small brass cylinder filled with distilled water and alcohol. The operating principle of this device is the same as that of the wax-filled thermostats discussed above.
Solid thermostat
The filler in such thermostats is ceresin. This is a substance similar in consistency to regular wax, which is mixed with copper powder and placed in a copper container. The cylinder has a rubber membrane connected to a rod, also made of dense rubber that is resistant to high temperatures. Ceresin, expanded from heating, presses on the membrane, which, in turn, acts on the rod and valve, ensuring the circulation of antifreeze.
The main element of a solid-fill thermostat is a container with ceresite and copper powder
Which thermostat is better
Today, thermostats based on solid fillers are considered the best option for the VAZ 2106, since they have the optimal combination of price and quality. In addition, they can be found in any auto store, unlike liquid single-valve ones, which are practically no longer on sale.
About choosing a thermostat for VAZ 2107
When the standard thermostat on the “seven” fails, the car owner inevitably faces the problem of choosing a replacement thermostat. There are many companies on the market today, both domestic and Western, whose products can also be used in the VAZ 2107. Let’s list the most popular manufacturers.
Gates thermostats
Gates products have been represented on the domestic auto parts market for a long time. The main difference between this manufacturer is the wide range of thermostats produced.
The range of Gates thermostats is very wide
Here are classic thermostats with valves based on industrial wax, and thermostats with electronic control systems created for more modern machines. Relatively recently, the company began producing case thermostats, that is, devices supplied complete with a proprietary case and pipe system. The manufacturer claims that the efficiency of a motor equipped with their thermostat will be maximum. Judging by the consistently high demand for Gates thermostats, the manufacturer is telling the truth. But you have to pay for high reliability and good quality. The price of Gates products starts from 700 rubles.
Luzar thermostats
It will probably be difficult to find a “Seven” owner who has not at least once heard about Luzar thermostats. This is the second most popular manufacturer in the domestic auto parts market. The main difference between Luzar products has always been the optimal price-quality ratio.
Luzar thermostats have an optimal ratio of quality and price
Another characteristic difference is the versatility of the produced thermostats: a device suitable for the “seven” can be installed on the “six”, “kopek” and even “Niva” without any problems. Finally, you can purchase such a thermostat in almost any auto store (unlike Gates thermostats, which cannot be found everywhere). All these points made “Luzarovsky” thermostats incredibly popular among domestic car enthusiasts. The cost of the Luzar thermostat starts from 460 rubles.
Finord thermostats
Finord is a Finnish company specializing in automotive cooling systems. It produces not only various radiators, but also thermostats, which are highly reliable and very affordable. The company does not provide any specific information about the production process of its thermostats, citing trade secrets.
The Finnish company Finord produces good thermostats at a reasonable price
All that can be found on the official website is assurance of the highest reliability and durability of Finord thermostats. Judging by the fact that the demand for these thermostats has remained consistently high for at least ten years, the Finns are telling the truth. The cost of Finord thermostats starts from 550 rubles.
Wahler thermostats
Wahler is a German manufacturer specializing in thermostats for cars and trucks. Like Gates, Wahler provides car owners with a wide range of models, from electronic thermostats to classic ones with industrial wax. All Wahler thermostats are thoroughly tested and are characterized by the highest reliability. These devices have only one problem: their price is very high. The simplest Wahler single-valve thermostat will cost the car owner 1,200 rubles.
Wahler thermostats are high quality and high price
Here we should also mention the counterfeits of this brand. Now they are becoming more and more common. Fortunately, the fakes are made very clumsily, and are given away primarily by the poor quality of packaging, printing and the suspiciously low price of 500–600 rubles per device. A driver who sees a “German” thermostat sold at such a more than modest price should remember: good things have always been expensive.
So which thermostat should a car enthusiast choose for his “Seven”?
The answer is simple: the choice depends only on the thickness of the car owner’s wallet. A person who is not short of money and wants to replace the thermostat and forget about this device for many years can opt for Wahler products. If you don’t have a lot of money, but you want to install a high-quality device and at the same time have time to look for it, you can choose Gates or Finord. And finally, if money is really tight, you can simply install a Luzar thermostat from the nearest auto store. As they say - cheap and cheerful.
Signs of a broken thermostat
There are a number of signs that clearly indicate that the thermostat is faulty:
- The light on the instrument panel is constantly on, indicating that the engine is overheating. This usually happens because the thermostat valve has closed and is stuck in that position;
- The engine warms up very poorly. This means that the thermostat valve does not close tightly. As a result, antifreeze flows through both the small and large cooling circles and cannot warm up in a timely manner;
- After the engine starts, the lower thermostat tube heats up literally within a minute. You can check this by simply placing your hand on the nozzle. This situation indicates that the thermostat valve is stuck in the fully open position.
If any of these symptoms are detected, the driver should replace the thermostat as soon as possible. If the car owner ignores the above symptoms, this will inevitably lead to overheating of the engine and its jamming. It is extremely difficult to restore an engine after such a breakdown.
The main “sores” of the Renault Logan thermostat
The operating principle of the thermostat on Renault Logan is no different from similar devices installed on other cars, therefore its malfunctions are completely typical:
- The valve does not close or open completely;
- Opening delayed or vice versa ahead of time;
- Wear of the rubber seal;
- The valve is fully seated in the closed or open position.
But the Renault Logan thermostat is characterized by another problem, which is rarely found on other cars; we are talking about ill-conceived design solutions introduced into the product, which lead to frequent leaks of coolant.
The fact is that the Renault Logan thermostat housing is made of glass-filled plastic, the ears have holes for bolts and the distances between them are large.
This leads to the fact that, despite the fact that the body of the product itself is firmly screwed to a solid aluminum plate, it bends under the influence of high temperatures (bends the ears). As a result, instead of a solid plane, a hole forms on the Renault Logan thermostat housing.
As a result, the tightness of the connection between the cover and the seat is broken and this leads to a leak of coolant. And even the sealing rubber that fits the valve itself does not save the situation.
Also, there have been cases when, as a result of the weakening of the valve spring, which occurs over time, the valve opens earlier, when the antifreeze temperature is lower than necessary, as a result, coolant that has not yet been warmed up begins to circulate in a large circle.
Therefore, replacement can be carried out as an entire element assembly, or only its valve, body (which was damaged by high temperatures), or only the rubber seal.
But you can do without replacing the housing; for this you will need a sealant, provided that the bend on it is not strong. But more on that later.
How to choose?
In order to decide on purchasing a suitable thermostat for Renault Logan, you should adhere to specific criteria. The automotive market today provides a very wide range of these spare parts from various manufacturers offering products of dubious quality at tempting prices.
Based on extensive experience, we do not recommend purchasing spare parts, including the thermostat housing, from manufacturers in this segment, since the risk of reoccurrence of the problem we are considering is very high, and the gasket is also purchased. If after replacement the thermostat leaks, then most likely you are faced with a fake. It is recommended to take a closer look at the original Renault brand products, which will allow you to avoid troubles after replacing the thermostat and ensure the service life of the unit installed on the car. And the thermostat housing will last a long time.
For 1.6-liter units, the thermostat housing is supplied separately, unlike version 1.4. It is better to purchase a thermostat housing as a set, since the housing material has a limited service life. We also recommend purchasing a new gasket as it is not included in the kit and is sold separately.

As you can see from this article, changing the thermostat is a task that even a novice car enthusiast can do. The main thing to remember when deciding to replace this device is that you cannot save money on it, since repairing engine damage caused by a faulty thermostat will cost the car owner much more.
The thermostat is one of the most important components of the engine cooling system, allowing it to warm up a cold engine in a short amount of time until it reaches an operating temperature of 90°C and significantly reduces wear on the latter.
What is a thermostat in a car
As a rule, the thermostat is placed near the radiator. The design is equipped with a return spring, a heat-sensitive valve, and a solid filler. The pipes are connected so that 2 circles are used for cooling: the large one covers the radiator, and the small one covers the engine. After the engine starts, the coolant begins to flow and heats up, which ensures the fastest warm-up. When the coolant temperature reaches 90°C, the temperature-sensitive element opens the valve. The liquid enters the radiator, which ensures effective cooling, and the warmed-up engine keeps the temperature at normal levels.
A huge mistake is made by those who, in the hope of saving on cost, decide to purchase and install Chinese-made thermostats. The latter soon fail and require replacement even faster.
Where is the thermostat located
On injection-type engines, the thermostat is located under the air filter, and on carburetor engines it is in the same place, except that the filter housing itself is slightly shifted on older models of the VAZ 2114-2115 family, which makes the removal procedure much easier.
There is no need to remove the housing; the high-voltage wires are simply disconnected and the required component of the cooling system can be dismantled. On injection models, after removing the filter housing, the thermostat will be visible. The battery on the right side can be considered a reference point.
When does a VAZ 2114 thermostat need to be replaced?
An indicator of wear may be improper valve operation. In some cases, the coolant begins to circulate in a large circle, as a result of which the car begins to quickly heat up, which is very little noticeable in the summer - this is the main problem. In winter, on the contrary, the car warms up very poorly. In these cases, the thermostat valve is completely open and does not close. The opposite case is when the valve is completely closed and the liquid begins to circulate in a small circle, the car begins to quickly heat up, and when driving in dense city traffic with traffic jams or during long stops, the engine temperature even reaches critical levels.
Replacing the thermostat on VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099
Welcome! Today you will learn from this article how to correctly replace the air filter housing thermostat on cars of the Samara family.
Operating principle of a car thermostat: • It is designed to regulate the air supplied to the car engine. Due to this thing, your car will heat up faster in summer evening conditions, that is, at a temperature just below “+25°C”, the thermostat closes the cold air supply pipe with a damper located in it and therefore the car warms up faster.
• And at an ambient temperature slightly above “+35°C”, the same damper that is located in the thermostat closes the warm air supply pipe and, therefore, exclusively cold air begins to flow into the engine.
Where is the thermostat located? The location of the thermostat is very simple, but why? Yes, because it is located at the very tip of the air intake, and the tip of the air intake is the main part of the air filter housing. Below is a photo indicating the location of the thermostat:
When should you change the thermostat? It must be replaced when:
- His deformations.
- And also if the damper, which is located in the inside of the thermostat, is not working properly. (You will find information about how to check the damper for functionality just below in the same article under the heading: “Checking the thermostat for functionality”)
- Even if the thermostat is faulty, the car’s engine can begin to heat up very quickly to high temperatures.
- And also the engine may practically stop heating altogether, that is, it will still heat up, but it will do so very slowly.
How to replace the thermostat, also known as the air filter thermostat, on a VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099?
Removal: 1) First, disconnect the tip of the air intake, from the housing inside which the air filter is located.
Note! Disconnect the tip of the air intake by turning it left and right!
2) Then, holding a wrench, use it to unscrew the bolt that secures the thermostat housing to the air filter housing.
3) When the bolt is unscrewed, remove the thermostat by disconnecting the hot air hose from it.
Note! The hose is secured with a clamp, so before disconnecting the hose, use a screwdriver to unscrew the screw securing this clamp!
Installation: The entire operation is performed in reverse order, that is:
1) First, install the new thermostat in its place, and then tighten the bolt that secures it.
2) Next, connect the air intake tip to it.
3) Finally, connect the warm air intake hose to the new thermostat. After connecting, tighten the screw of the clamp that secures this hose.
Checking the air filter thermostat for functionality:
Note! The check is carried out with the thermostat removed!
1) First, pick up the thermostat and then lower it into a suitable container of water. In this case, your water must be heated in advance to a temperature above “+35°C”.
Note! The thermostat does not need to be completely placed in a container of water. You only need to lower the thermo-power element into the water itself, which is indicated by the red arrow!
2) Then, while the thermo-power element is in the water, at this time you look into the inside of the cold air supply hole of the thermostat and check the position of the damper, which should turn and therefore open completely.
Note! If for some reason the damper remains in the closed position (As shown in the figure below), then replace the thermostat with a new one, or contact a specialized workshop to repair it!

Functions and operating principle
It is extremely important for a car to remove excess heat that accumulates in the engine. This is what coolant is primarily designed for.
To reduce this very temperature, the cooling system of the “fourteenth” VAZ model includes a thermostat and an electric cooling radiator fan .
Device diagram
The valve, which is responsible for the flow of coolant, is located inside the housing. It, in turn, has three pipes:
- Input – goes to the pump;
- Two outputs - from the radiator and the engine.
Determining thermostat malfunction without dismantling
Instructions on how to check the operation of the thermostat without removing it from the car:
- Determine where the thermostat is located;
- Find the hose connecting the radiator to the thermostat;
- Start the cold engine;
- Check the temperature with a pyrometer. You can approximately measure the temperature with your own hands, but it is not recommended. In this case, you should be especially careful, since there are many moving and hot parts in the engine compartment;
Determining the temperature directly on the car
- Check the pyrometer readings for trend to decide whether the thermostat needs to be replaced.
The thermostat is fully operational if during the first few minutes the pipe was cold or slightly heated, and then there was a sharp jump in temperature. If the hose slowly warmed up from the very start of the engine, it means the valve is stuck in the open position. If the pipe is not heated, there is a risk of a stuck open thermostat. A more accurate state of the device can be found by removing the thermostat.
