Lada Granta: technical characteristics, interior, functionality and equipment of the people's car of 2021

Lada Granta is an affordable front-wheel drive car, developed on the same platform as the Lada Kalina model. Serial production of the car began in the spring of 2011, but the cars went on sale only more than six months later. In fact, the Lada Granta replaced one of the classic lines of AvtoVAZ represented by a division called Samara. After five years, the manufacturer added a “brother” in the liftback body to the base Lada Granta sedan.

Today, the car, which has been updated more than once, is one of the best-selling among all models of the “people's brand”. And in 2016, 2 modifications were supplemented with several more versions. These are “Drive Active” and “Lada Granta Sport”, which only further increased the popularity of the car and its demand.

Brief history of the car

Back in the early 2000s, representatives of the AvtoVAZ plant decided to replace the traditional car with a more modern modification. For this purpose, the concept of a new car was soon developed, called “Lada-2151”. However, the result was that the car was too expensive. In addition, it had a lot of disadvantages, so the car never made it into mass production. In general, this idea of ​​“modernization” failed miserably.

After an unsuccessful attempt to release “that same” car, the turn finally came to the Lada Granta, which today has the status of an affordable and, at the same time, very equipped “people's car”.

The first sketches of the future new product were made back in 2009. Then, a few months later, the new project was approved, and the manufacturer began production.

Note! The designers spent about 2.5 years developing, creating and releasing the debut model! And this despite the fact that the platform for the new car was already ready, because for Granta the architecture was borrowed from the Lada Kalina.

As for the design of the car, it was decided to make it unique. at least, at least different from the “Kalina” model, from which the platform was already taken. To select a designer, they even announced a competition, in which Ivan Lepeshkin won.

The transverse bar of the radiator grille, including the Lada brand nameplate, was taken as the basis for the development of the design plan. The rook was chosen as the emblem, and the chrome line was connected in accordance with the concept with the Volga River.

After releasing the “trial” cars, the manufacturer began testing, which confirmed the very good qualities of the car in terms of reliability, durability and safety.

Moreover, the design was perfect for domestic buyers, taking into account Russian roads. The new model was also characterized by spaciousness, moderate body dimensions and optimal ground clearance.

On a note! According to the project manager for the creation of the Lada Granta, the main goal of creating the car was achieved. The manufacturer was faced with the task of developing and producing a car that would be accessible to a wide range of motorists, combining high quality, reliability and low cost.

Of course, the car is not without its shortcomings, but during development they tried, if not to eliminate them completely, then at least to reduce their manifestation to a minimum. Each new solution was assessed by experts for rationality of application and, importantly, how its implementation could affect the cost.

Let's sum it up

Lada Granta is a budget car with an optimal price-quality ratio. On the road, this vehicle behaves confidently and has good handling. The car is able to accelerate quickly, without sudden jolts, and the speed changes easily. In addition, this car differs from competitors in the same price group in its increased traction, which makes it a more practical option for harsh winters. The ergonomics of the interior, laconic but expressive design, good assembly - all these are arguments in favor of purchasing this particular model.

The price of the Lada Granta largely determines its appearance. Therefore, the exterior of the car looks, to put it as tactfully as possible, very simple. It is noteworthy that to develop the appearance of the sedan model, the designers used long-outdated software. As a result, the layout turned out to be “dubious,” and the management of the auto brand even decided to invite an expert from England, Steve Mattin. It was he who eventually became the chief designer. True, due to this, little has changed, because when creating a car, one had to save on literally everything that did not seriously affect the safety and reliability of the car.

The most unsuccessful modification in terms of exterior is the “base”, which contains an unpainted bumper and “pre-revolutionary” stamped wheels. The latter, by the way, also have very compact dimensions: their diameter is only 13 inches.

But in order not to be biased, let us remind you that this is, after all, a budget car, but a car in the premium segment. Therefore, some shortcomings and shortcomings that reduce the cost of a car are quite acceptable. At least the good news is that the manufacturer provided the ability to choose body colors. In this way, you can at least somehow “refresh” and transform the exterior in accordance with the taste preferences of the car enthusiast in terms of shade. To conclude the review of the exterior of the new sedan, let's talk about its dimensions:

  • length is 4268 mm;
  • width reaches 1700 mm;
  • height is 1500 mm;
  • the wheelbase stopped at 2476 mm;
  • and the maximum ground clearance was 180 mm.

Now the Lada Granta 2021 model year can also boast of a station wagon. Without this type of body, the model range cannot be called complete. Especially in our country, where there are millions of practical summer residents. In the exterior of the Kalina universal body, only the front part is new. At the same time, the hood and fenders have the same shape, so there will be no problems with spare parts from a tin. If there is a station wagon, then there must be an off-road option. So it is that in the near future Russians will be able to please themselves with a modification of the Lada Granta Cross. Car interior

The interior of the new product turned out to be much better than the exterior. But the main advantage of the car’s interior does not come down to the aesthetic or ergonomic part, which, it is worth saying, is seriously inferior to other budget brands, including Chinese ones.

The key advantage is the spaciousness of the interior, its spaciousness and relative comfort. In this regard, the Granta sedan turned out to be much more attractive than its predecessor, the Kalina. As an example, we can cite the volume of the luggage compartment, which reaches 520 liters (for Kalina it was 120 liters less). And if you fold the back row of seats, the volume increases to 820 liters, which is absolutely great!

As a result, what we get: Granta’s interior is no less simple than the exterior, and devoid of decorative elements and the number of additional details used in general. Even the door trim on the Lada Grant was devoid of many decorative elements. In Kalina, for example, there were 9 of them, but Granta had only 3.

Note! The above facts do not mean that the new product is completely devoid of any decorative elements. In fact, over 4 hundred original parts were used in it, many of which were purchased from foreign companies.

Yes, the interior is simple, and this affected not only the finishing, but also the optional features. But, again, all this was done for the good, because the initial task of the developers was to create a car that, if not everyone, then very many could buy.

And now a little about the functions, optional and entertainment system of the car. So, in the cabin there is the presence of:

  • Simple steering wheel;
  • Standard instrument panel with large wells reflecting tachometer and speedometer readings;
  • A small screen located between the above elements, which displays basic information regarding the condition of the car;
  • The central console, which, by the way, has a very decent design;
  • Two round ventilation deflectors;
  • Emergency button;
  • Multimedia system with buttons that supports listening to discs;
  • Climate control system regulators;
  • Buttons for various purposes located at the bottom of the center console;
  • Cigarette lighter.

On a note! There are also places to store small items in the cabin, as well as a pair of cup holders bordering the gearshift lever.

As for the rear seats, they are not particularly comfortable. According to the plan, they are designed for three passengers, but if you take into account the convenience of the trip, there is only enough space for two.

In the case of transporting three people, the one who sits in the middle will be openly interfered with by the floor transmission tunnel. And it will be a bit cramped for everyone. That is, fatigue during long trips is guaranteed.

Among the advantages of the rear row seats, it is worth highlighting the presence of headrests and seat belts. Well...at least that's it.

Technical characteristics of the Lada Granta sedan

Now let’s get to the fun part: a review of the technical characteristics of a sedan car. So, what engine did you decide to install on the Lada Grant and what was it capable of as a result of the test drives?

Power unit

Now the sedan is offered in two main power units. Both engines run on gasoline, have the same volume of 1.6 liters, a traditional electric control system and distributed injection. Based on research results, the engines meet international Euro-4 requirements. But the gas distribution mechanisms of the units are different. The same applies to connecting rod and piston groups.

The “base” provides for the installation of an engine with an 8-valve timing system (SONC type), producing 87 “horses” of power and 140 Nm of maximum torque.

The second engine is already characterized by the presence of a 16-valve gas distribution element. it produces 107 hp. With. power and 148 Nm of torque potential.

On a note! According to the owners, both engines perform quite well in the winter season. They start “without any problems” even in severe frosts. Although there are also reviews on the Internet in which car enthusiasts write about the opposite, pointing out that the engine is acting up for no apparent reason.

Transmission

Both available engines are paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. But the top-end engine can be equipped with a Japanese automatic transmission in 4 gears or with a “robot”.

The latter has been created for 6 years in a row on the basis of mechanics, which are automated through the participation of ZF.

Note! On the Lada Grant, AvtoVAZ for the first time began installing automatic transmissions on an ongoing basis (that is, on a serial basis).

Chassis and brakes

Many suspension elements of the new sedan were inherited from the Lada Kalina. However, in Grant they were significantly worked on and, as a result, improved.

Already in the first variation of the car, a negative camber angle was provided, which was formed at the factory production stage and did not require adjustment in the future.

This made it possible to achieve increased vehicle stability and improved driving performance.

As for the suspension layout, MacPherson struts were installed at the front, and a semi-independent element in the form of a torsion beam was installed at the rear.

The front brakes of the car are disc, represented by a ventilation plate. At the back there is a drum mechanism, which has a very simple structure.

Safety

The security systems installed on the Lada Grant correspond to its price category. The manufacturer provided the following functions and elements that increase the level of safety:

  • Front side airbags (only in luxury version);

Lada Granta Sport

The Granta “Sport” version is a “charged” modification of the “B” class sedan in accordance with European standards. This car was created by the developers of the Lada Sport department with a focus on youth. In addition to the basic version of the “sporty” model, the model line also includes “Drive Active” and “Cup” equipment. the latter is classified in the racing car segment.

The Lada Granta Sport was first shown to the public at the Moscow Motor Show back in 2012. And, it is worth noting that outwardly it looks noticeably more attractive than a standard sedan. At first glance, it is the same car, but only more “pumped up” and massive.

However, this is not entirely true. After all, the new version contains a lot of unique and different elements from the sedan that are worthy of attention. This:

  • clearly sporty terrain;
  • updated thresholds;
  • compact wing located on the trunk lid;
  • larger 16-inch wheels with multiple spokes;
  • an attractive bright nameplate and the inscription “Sport” located above it.

The sports modification of the car has significantly expanded the audience of Lada fans. In terms of dimensions, it is not much different from the sedan, but some changes are still observed:

  • length remained the same (4280 mm);
  • the width was 1436 mm (it also did not change);
  • but the height was reduced, stopping at 1450 mm instead of 1500 mm for the sedan;
  • the minimum ground clearance was also reduced, amounting to only 140 mm with a curb weight;
  • the wheelbase has also been preserved; for the sport version it is 2476 mm;
  • the same applies to curb/maximum permissible weight (1075 and 1560 kg, respectively).

Now a little about the functionality and equipment of the interior as a whole. So, the interior is characterized by the presence of a standard architecture of the main front panel. In sight:

  • large touch screen;
  • regulators that help control the air conditioner;
  • many control buttons for multimedia, radio and some other functions;
  • a rather simple steering wheel without any innovations, but covered in leather with red stitching.

The seats in the cabin are covered with fabric, but it is pleasant to the touch and, it seems, even of high quality. The chairs themselves have good lateral support and look very comfortable. The rear sofa can accommodate three passengers.

The power unit of the spore version has a volume of 1.6 liters. It is a 4-cylinder, 16-valve, supporting distributed injection. Such a motor is capable of developing power reaching 118 hp. s., and produce up to 154 Nm of maximum torque at 4750 rpm.

This engine works in tandem with a 5-speed manual transmission, which allows the car to reach a maximum speed of 184 km/h, and accelerate from zero to hundreds in 10.5 seconds. In this case, fuel consumption is:

  • 8.7 l. in the urban driving cycle;
  • 6.5 - mixed;
  • 5.2 - when traveling on the highway.

The suspension of the sports version of the Grant is, one might say, standard: there are MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. The brakes are disc on both sides and have a ventilation plate on the front.

To conclude our review of the Lada Sport version, we list some useful features provided by the manufacturer. So, already in the minimum configuration there is:

  • electric windows;
  • heated seats;
  • rear parking sensors;
  • air conditioner;
  • multimedia system;

How long will you boast about your administrative and financial resources in the person of Putin and his friends? I'm sorry, what? Does the sight of Logan make you sick? Have you been forced to license our crappy gearboxes and engines? Are you afraid that with the arrival of Renault, your suppliers will collapse, and along the way, your specific relationships with them? So do the damn thing yourself! Not a one-off copy, but a real car - one that will be bought, and most importantly, one that will bring money to the alliance. If you want, do it yourself, if you want, we will help. If you want, with your suppliers, or with ours. But do it! Then we'll see. We’ll just agree on the shore: the coolest car will be the one on which you can earn more. And then, lo and behold, we ourselves will buy a license for your platform... But do at least something!

And here I am in the Greek Hall. Three Lada Grants - or, according to the usual classification, VAZ-2190. The one that is cherry is in the “initial” version of Standard. Silver is “Luxury plus”. And the gray one is also Granta, but not a car, but a “designer cube”. Although, if we talk about the quality of surfaces, gaps and mates, Granta is the best! Not because it can’t be better, because “in the series” it should be just like that.

— Tell me, is the new car perceived more as an independent model or as a modification of the Kalina?

It seems that this is the main thing that worries VAZ planners and marketers now.

I answered:

- This is not Kalina. And no one will call her Kalina.

A sigh of relief. Bearing in mind that not only an artist can offend everyone, but also vice versa, I still squeezed out:

— There is no intrigue in Grant. And no smile.

The first thing that comes to mind: the front is a “soaped” Polo, the back is like your Logan. And the arches-wings on the large and steep wall of the trunk lid - as if they were drawn for this purpose, to convince at least themselves: Granta is not only not Kalina, but also not Logan! But when you walk around a couple of times, you still notice that these arms are a kind of reflection of the rear lights: they say, the lights could have been soooo big, but, excuse me, the budget. And if in profile... If we talk about good things, then it’s nice that they left the scarves of the windows behind the rear doors, on the roof pillars: not chopped with an ax, they say, unlike the same thing...

Then I said that Granta would not disfigure the city, but kept silent about the fact that she was unlikely to decorate it.


It seems that Andrei Zakharov, head of the design department, has warmer feelings not even about the Grant itself, but about the “designer cube” with its exemplary surfaces. Just now Zakharov is opening my eyes to the fact that the wings on the wall of the trunk lid are for a reason: they have a lot of meaning!

And yet, if we do not forget that this particular dull cherry Granta, without chrome on the front end, with unpainted bumpers and mirrors, on skinny 13-inch wheels, will, as they promise, cost 220 thousand rubles or so, one and a half times cheaper the same Logan in a similar configuration, then... It is alarming that Grant is tipped to be the founder of the vintage style, the absence of which we have been talking with VAZ for twenty years. Maybe Togliatti did see a more “smiling” development of Grants? My imagination is still lacking.

Why not involve, say, sunny Italians in the design? No, no: what about 220 thousand rubles? After all, they contain not only metal, glass, electricity, wages and profits; they also include the cost of development. So we limited ourselves to “very good advice” from Anthony Grade, a Renault designer seconded to Tolyatti from France. You can feel it, especially when viewed from behind.


Why did they bring the “seven” into the Greek Hall? To remind you: Granta is designed to enter the same consumer niche. True, unlike the Kalina sedan, the production of the VAZ “classic” does not stop, but is only transferred to Izhevsk. To me, the “seven” in the Greek Hall reminded me of the splendor and poverty of elderly Muscovite women - the kind who huddle on side chairs at conservatory concerts: a full ticket is too expensive for them. But how they hold their backs, how important it is for them that everything is festive! For earrings, for brooches... I look at the cherry Granta Standard - and I see in her eyes one single question: will Putin definitely extend the recycling program?

Actually, this was the main goal of the design: to save on everything possible. And along the way, learn how to design cars this way, including saving on the design itself. The exact amount of costs is not stated (“You see, there are different methods for calculating ...”), but a comparison of fragmentary information suggests that the cost was approximately two hundred million dollars.

Naturally, the VAZ-1118, or Kalina sedan, was taken as the basis. Whatever one may say, the VAZ platform is the most modern, and the Kalinovsky assembly shop (so far also the most modern) is underutilized - and when working in three shifts, it can produce another 150 thousand cars a year.

The future car was divided into 14 functional groups - and for brainstorming (how to make it cheaper, but not worse) they created the same number of temporary teams from specialists in different fields.

In May 2009, a sketch by VAZ designer Ivan Lepeshkin was approved, although this can hardly be considered the start of the project: Lepeshkin already knew ahead of time that at least the roof and doors should remain from the body of the Kalina sedan.

Granta, despite being a state-owned vehicle, has become longer than Kalina by an impressive 220 mm. And if from a practical point of view, an increase of 64 mm in the front overhang is a dubious achievement, then the 15-centimeter add-on at the rear is already a significant contribution to the trunk volume, brought to a record for our sedan industry of 480 liters (this is measured in “cubes”, and “net” volume - half a cubic meter). At the same time, the cabin remained confidently five-seater. What else could a buyer of such a car care about?

Did I hear right? No, here’s a voice recording: a potential Granta buyer is concerned about both the smoothness of the ride and the noise and vibrations. And - attention! — controllability. I repeat: gov-la-e-most!

The number of steering wheel revolutions from lock to lock has been reduced from an impotent four to a promising three. This, however, does not apply to the initial version of the Standard, but on the rest, with electric power steering, the “short rack” promised back under Tsar Gorokh will finally appear. A new anti-roll bar (“cheaper, but works better”), new shock absorbers, and also a negative camber angle of the rear wheels, which has never happened before. Also cheaper, but better? Maybe they say it’s not cheaper, but it’s definitely better.

“If you listen to you, it turns out that Granta, no matter what, is either better or no worse than Kalina.” Firstly, what stopped you from implementing the same thing on Kalina? And, secondly, what will now force me to pay a quarter more - and buy not Grant, but Kalina?

The ironic Shmelev responded to the point:

— I think the question is harmful.

But he still explained that over the past years the industry has moved forward, and, in particular, approaches to design have changed...

The main tool for “wiring” Kalina and Granta - at least at the first stage - is that production of the Kalina sedan will be discontinued in May (of the three body types, the sedan was indeed the most unsuccessful, although recently it accounted for a quarter produced by Kalin). And since the reactionary environment of potential Granta buyers is dominated by the opinion that only a sedan has the right to be called a car, this move will work - and, perhaps, will not deal a serious blow to the barely distinguishable Kalinov hatchback and station wagon (approximately 25 and 50 percent, respectively ).

However, it’s one thing to talk about the delights of Granta in the Greek Hall, and another... Will Granta really go better or at least not worse than Kalina?

Of course, even on the distant approaches to Togliatti, I tried, not by washing, but by riding, to knock out the opportunity to ride on Grant. But about the stone for sure: there haven’t been such broken roads in Tolyatti since the birth of the city! But that didn’t stop us from noticing a couple of “Dalmatians” on them: that’s what the Grant prototypes were nicknamed here because of their spotted camouflage.

In the morning, Sergei Medinets, the chief designer of the Grant, came to pick me up, and we went to Sosnovka, to the VAZ test site. We drove Kalina. I sat on the right, looked at the loose part of the glove compartment lid, listened to the songs of Soviet composers on the radio and thought: he specifically found this example of Kalina to compare with Granta - or has it been too long since I drove a Kalina?

After about forty minutes there was no doubt left: Granta rides better than Kalina. Although, of course, such a victory is difficult to classify as a breakthrough achievement.

According to Medinets, the “Dalmatian” who was waiting for us in Sosnovka most reliably reproduces the driving habits of the “commodity” Granta. The body is completely Grantov, and the fact that the headlights are from Oka doesn’t count. The engine is an 80-horsepower eight-valve engine with a conventional, rather than lightweight, connecting rod and piston group (the same will be on the initial versions of the Standard), but with a new Grant exhaust system. And the “chassis” is like that of the Grant in the intermediate version of Norma. It’s a pity, there is still an old gear shift mechanism, although a cable drive is provided for the Granta Lux: last year, when we drove the experimental Priora, this drive caused delight (AR No. 9, 2010).

First - a “big circle” on Kalina: along natural and artificial potholes and ruts, along the winding access roads... Remember everything. I won’t bore you with the storyboard of the surging feelings, and yet, for the sake of fairness, I’ll note that along a bumpy, but more or less straight road, it’s quite possible. And in turns too. True, provided that these turns are gentle and high-speed, and the transition modes are already behind us: there is even a distinct reaction force on the steering wheel! But when I had to turn around in a cramped dead end... Where are my seventeen years? Where are you, the high-speed steering skills you once acquired at Tsygankov’s school? I turn and turn the steering wheel, and it turns and turns... And this ugly sound of the engine, and this itching on the pedals - and this signature VAZ lack of information in the accelerator, when you seem to be scraping off rust from all the moving connections of the drive. I’m afraid that this birthmark will also be transferred to the “e-gas” - an electronically driven pedal.

Granta. If you evaluate with your feet, then there is nothing new. The same itching on the pedals, the same “rust” of the accelerator and the same excellent platform for resting the left foot: both the position and the angle of inclination are like putting on a slipper. But as you move up to the hip joint, the sensations become refreshed. Judging by the fifth point and the vestibular apparatus, shock absorbers were finally installed on the car, the choice of which was influenced not only by their size and warm relations with suppliers. On sharp bumps it’s no worse than the omnivorous amorphous Kalina, but on waves it’s clearly better, more collected.

Bypassing the heart (it always senses a trick), we move on to the hands. If you weren’t wrapped around Kalina’s steering wheel five minutes ago, then you don’t know my joy, but I don’t know that the sun came out at that very moment. It turns out that this is how a VAZ can be driven, and almost the cheapest one! Of course, it’s not just the “short” steering mechanism and a more or less tolerably tuned electric power steering. Here is the chassis as a whole, and a lighter, but also more rigid body, and with improved “frequency characteristics”... Ten minutes later I told Sergei that after the “eight”, which I bought from the first batch in the mid-eighties, this is the first a mass-produced VAZ car that I find interesting to drive. Of course, we must take into account what the run-up background was like then and what it is like now.

Even though the steering wheel makes one less turn, it seemed that it was no worse insulated from lateral shocks on uneven corners. But the information content, and in general the notorious feeling of the car, has changed not even quantitatively, but qualitatively! That is, it appeared! Of the things that puzzled me, I would only note the excessively sharp and therefore unexpected drop in force on the steering wheel as the speed decreases from highway to city. It seems that the engineers were carried away by the ability to easily change the degree of participation of the electric amplifier depending on the speed. Or vice versa: in the grip of total economy, they decided not to bother with such trifles. I wish the steering wheel itself was not from Kalina, but a three-spoke one, specially designed for the Granta... I never held onto it.

We move higher, to the ears. This is not yet music, but it is no longer a cacerolazo, a march of empty pans. The sound of the engine became more combed, even a hint of “aluminum” velvety appeared. “Aerodynamics” is also lacking.

Even though it’s based on the Kalina platform, there are plenty of new parts in both the chassis and engine systems, including the anti-roll bar and all the springs and shock absorbers. The rear beam remains the same, and the change in wheel alignment angles (Granta has wheel camber - -1°, toe - +10′, and Kalina - everything is “zero”) was achieved using special flanges

Medinets reminds us that this particular prototype was used to work on handling, so all the noise insulation elements were not installed here (I just thought that there were too many “tires and roads”) - and glances at his watch. I'm begging for another lap on the high-speed oval.

It is clear that they will not show all their cards (information discipline is another sign of working with Renault). But it’s damn interesting to know how exactly the goals were formulated in the “catalog of tasks”? What did they decide to spit on, and what, perhaps, to bring to “market level”? To what extent is all this embodied?


As the chief designer of the project, Sergei Medinets, assures, this “Dalmatian” has already been trained in such a way that one can safely judge the habits of production cars from it. It looks like the driver of Granta will finally have a chance to find what we have been deprived of for so long while driving VAZ cars - “the feeling of a car.” First of all, this concerns more understandable, intelligible connections “along the steering wheel”. It’s a pity that “on gas” everything remains as before

Or maybe Granta Standard has a special, secret mission? Maybe the conversation with customers will follow the well-worn scenario of dealers selling Volkswagen Polo or Hyundai Solaris?

- Do you really want Grant for 220 thousand rubles? Of course, we will try to reduce the waiting period to six months, but... What do you think of Granta Norma? Yes, yes, it’s more expensive, but the amplifier... Perhaps we’ll be able to do it in a month. The one on the display? Oh, no, in the showroom, dear, there is a Granta Lux. Beautiful, huh? ABS, power accessories, the trunk opens with the remote control, standard music... Alas, about one and a half times... And the color is good, right? Do you really want to talk about credit? A comparison of virtual and real “pictures” after a crash test at a speed of 56 km/h gives an idea of ​​​​the reliability of the computer simulation. This means that you can also save money on full-scale tests. In any case, even the “initial” Granta Standard without a driver’s airbag must successfully pass the real test (rule R94) - otherwise it cannot be put on the market. And we, in turn, will try not to delay the impact within the framework of the ARCAP program (the impact configuration is the same, but the speed is 64 km/h)

It would seem that the cross-member of the instrument panel and the steering wheel shaft are not the most intricate pieces of hardware. But their optimization made it possible to increase the frequency of the so-called first bending resonance from 28 to 35 Hz, and ultimately reduce steering wheel vibrations at idle speed by half

A couple of days later it became known that, despite the rise in the market, the next, fourth stage of preferential disposal was coming: another five billion rubles were planned to be allocated from the budget. It must be assumed that at least three quarters of this amount will again go to AvtoVAZ. But if previously the most popular “beneficiary” was the VAZ “seven”, now, taking into account the fact that the “seven” is moving to Izhevsk... It is curious that among the foreign cars in the “preferential” list, Renault - Logan and Sandero are leading. Oh. Is it because the French “allowed” the VAZ team to develop their car and even promised, if successful, to buy a license for the Kalinov platform, because they were guaranteed support in the form of a new round of “recycling”? And isn’t that why Komarov specified the start date for Grant sales? I wonder if it will coincide with the beginning of the fourth stage of the program?


An engine with a 16-valve gas distribution mechanism and a lightweight connecting rod-piston group (factory index - 21126) is a privilege of the Lux+ version, and eight-valve engines with a lightweight ShPG (21116) will be equipped with the Granta Norma and Granta Luxe. The total weight of the ShPG has been reduced by 39%. Along with other measures (in particular, this eight-valve engine uses the same nozzles for cooling the pistons as on the 16-valve engine 21126), this made it possible to increase torque and power, reduce fuel consumption (from 7 to 10 percent) and oil (from 30 to 40 percent), reduce noise and vibration, and most importantly - increase the engine life from 120 thousand kilometers (with a conventional ShPG) to 200 thousand. Another privilege of the Lux+ version is the cable drive of the gearbox, which practically eliminates the unpleasant vibrations of the lever

And wasn’t this the “trick” that the heart sensed? It's even insulting. In my opinion, Granta could handle it herself.

Grant for two million

As soon as we returned from Sosnovka to Togliatti, Vlad Nezvankin, executive director of the TMS Sport company, formerly known as Torgmash, came to pick me up - and for several years now, with varying degrees of success, has been trying to become a kind of court sports studio. Well, like AMG with Mercedes...

The first thing I saw outside the gates of Torgmash was the brand new Granta body. Several more of these bodies stood in the workshops in the sparks of grinders and electric welding, and the first five “combat” cars can be seen on June 12: they will be brought to the ring track in Myachkovo near Moscow, where the Lada Granta Cup series will begin - a seven-stage competition that will end with a “city” race in Tolyatti. A unique case for AvtoVAZ: a sports car will see the light of day before a production car!

They are alike? Of course, there is something in common. But a little. Judge for yourself about the appearance (but, you must admit, it’s good!), but Nezvankin told us something about the filling. The day before, bench tests of the engine to determine external speed characteristics had just been completed. Power (based on a 98-horsepower VAZ-21126 engine) - 237 hp. at 6500 rpm. A lot of? This is thanks to a Garret turbocharger. Why at such low speeds? They were specially limited: on the one hand, to reduce the risk of “chemistry” on the part of the teams and extend the service life, and on the other, due to the fact that the torque plateau of 31 kgm starts at approximately 2800 rpm, so there should be enough traction and without “twist”. The torque could have been increased (currently the excess boost pressure is slightly above 1 atm, and it is easy to increase), but transmission engineers opposed: the Granta Sport is equipped with a five-speed sequential gearbox of its own design and production, and it is structurally designed for a torque of up to 30 kgm. The clutch is cermet (diameter 184 mm).

The chassis is based on engineering developments used on racing Priors prepared for the 2009 WTCC world series. And in order not to start working on the chassis from scratch, the wheelbase was extended by about 150 mm.

In mid-April, when I arrived in Tolyatti, there was not a single fully prepared car yet, and therefore the 5.8 seconds to hundreds that appear in the advertising booklet are just a guess. Nezvankin, inspired by the results of the tests on the engine stand, assures that 5.5 seconds is quite realistic, but we will find out the exact numbers together when we “measure” the car either at the Dmitrovsky test site or at the VAZ test site in Sosnovka.

What is the price? If you buy the car, then 1 million 890 thousand rubles. And if you rent, then 150 thousand rubles for one stage of the championship. And although this amount includes delivery and full engineering and technical support, the “circle” will still cost the same amount as a “regular” Grant will cost. And this is for one race... Potential buyers of Grants from the “target audience” are probably better off not knowing about these amounts.

Lada Granta Liftback

Lada Granta liftback is another modification of the new product from AvtoVAZ. What is this anyway? A liftback is one of the varieties of the well-known hatchback, which has long become a competitor to the station wagon. Only the first one differs from the second one by the presence of a step on the rear door, which makes the car look like a regular sedan.

What is remarkable about the Granta Lada in the liftback body? Let's figure it out. And we will start, as usual, with the exterior.

Exterior

The exterior of the liftback remained virtually unchanged. There are only a few innovations that can be noted:

  • in an updated bumper on the front side, which has acquired a more modern look;
  • a modified fairing located at the front, which is framed by the air intake;
  • “relocating” fog lights, which are now in a new location;
  • improved mirrors equipped with turning signals on the body.

On a note! When developing the design of the Lada in a liftback body, the issue of excessive savings is no longer so pressing. Therefore, the external style turned out to be more dynamic, modern and aesthetically attractive.

What else is worth noting about the exterior of the body?

The appearance of profile stampings running from the line of the front glass installed to the very edges of the hood;

  • Transformation of the ascending line of the armrest;
  • The presence of a domed roof;
  • Smooth transition of body lines from roof to trunk;
  • Changing the shape of the front and rear lights, which now seem to “flow” onto the side of the car.

The rear of the car is completely different from its sedan version. On the rear side there is a large luggage compartment door and large glass in which it was decided to mount windshield wipers.

There are also massive lights, a very nice and neat bumper, on which fog lights operating on the basis of LEDs are located.

Interior

The interior of the liftback almost completely replicates the interior of the sedan version, which allows us to conclude that the developers decided not to bother much with the interior decoration at all, making only a couple of adjustments.

The instrument panel remains the same. It shows an on-board computer screen surrounded by a pair of wells. The layout is standard, the dashboard as a whole is empty and unremarkable, but only until the warning lamps light up.

Note! One of the few innovations in the interior of an avo in a liftback body is an updated gearshift lever. It is also worth noting the presence of a new indicator showing the temperature level of cooling fluid in the engine.

The seats received different upholstery with decorative inserts. The center console was complemented with silver trim. The door handles were also slightly improved, having been decorated with a different shape and a different color scheme from the sedan. However, this is only relevant for the top version of the Grant. All the same elements remained in the database without any changes.

What else is worth noting in the salon?

  • The presence of many compartments for small items;
  • The presence of a 7-inch touch screen that can transmit images from the rear view camera. True, the latter is installed optionally together with the multimedia system.

The driver's seat is adjustable. The same can be said about the steering wheel, which can be adjusted to different angles. The steering wheel is also equipped with electric power steering, which is not bad.

The rear can accommodate 3 passengers. But, as in the case of a sedan, those who sit in the center will be clearly hampered by the floor tunnel.

The trunk remains the same volume and even slightly increased (by 20 liters); it can accommodate up to 440 liters of luggage. If you fold the back row of seats, it increases to 760 liters.

Who “killed” Kalina?

The main news with the change of update is that the name “Kalina”, under which VAZ hatchbacks and B-class station wagons were produced, has sunk into oblivion. Now AVTOVAZ has a single model in this segment - Granta. In response to my direct question whether Kalina has fallen victim to the marketing strategies of the Tolyatti people (Rio and Solaris have noticeably displaced the model’s position in sales reports, and with one name for four bodies - a sedan, a liftback, a hatchback and a station wagon - there is a chance), Executive Vice President for sales and marketing of AVTOVAZ Jan Ptacek turned the tables on his colleague, design director Steve Mattin. He, they say, drew such a successful image of the new family that it no longer made sense to divide it by name.

  • Ptachek provided us with some more information. If the market grew by 17% in the first 7 months of this year, then Lada grew by 20% (199 thousand cars sold). In the most massive segment B (37% of the country's total car market), Grant and Kalin accounted for 18%. It is clear that in Tolyatti they paid especially close attention to updating their bestseller.

Technical characteristics of liftback

The technical characteristics of the car in the liftback body are, of course, similar, but there are still some features.

Powertrain and transmission

As a power unit, the manufacturer offers to choose one of the engine options:

  • The first 16-valve engine, with a volume of 1.6 liters, produces 106 horses and 148 Nm of maximum torque at 4000 rpm. This engine is equipped with four cylinders and an electronic fuel supply system, as well as dynamic supercharging. This motor is installed in the top version.

What will restyling bring?

The main innovation is the transition of the car to the modern Global Access platform, due to which the range of engines available for installation in different modifications will be significantly expanded. Most likely, the manufacturer will equip the cars with foreign, more powerful and efficient motors with high efficiency and excellent performance characteristics.

As for the exterior and interior, they will most likely also be changed. But taking into account the fact that the car remains budget-friendly, you shouldn’t expect premium quality. Most likely the option will be updated, which will become more modern. Perhaps they will improve the controls and equip the interior with touch monitors and control buttons.
